Title: Your Favorite AARoads Threads
Post by: JoePCool14 on September 18, 2020, 02:05:26 PM
I'm not sure if this topic has ever been brought up here before, assuming it hasn't...

What are everyone's favorite threads on the forum? It could be threads under any board or sub-board, including regional boards.

For reference, your favorite thread could be anything from a place you check immediately when you sign on, or to a favorite thread of the past you enjoy looking back on (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=7720.0).  ;-)

For starters, mine would have to be Redesign This! (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=9539.0) over in Road-Related Illustrations. Without a doubt, it's the place I have spent the most time trying to redesign assemblies over the years.

Sorry State of Automobiles in the 70s, 80s, 90s since that went way further than I thought it would and has a nice assortment of video links.

Alanland was awesome.  I still think it was going well, but some people forget that if they don't care about a thread, they truly have the option to ignore a thread or topic, and their complaining ultimately lead to its demise.  Many threads get political or become a bit of an online brawl.  Alanland stayed quite sane.

Outside of that, there's several threads that I keep tabs on, but the vast majority of threads on here I've never looked at, or at minimum contributed to.

I'm a little embarrassed of myself for it now, but I did start a similar thread (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=22268.msg2303917#msg2303917) way back in February 2018.

I generally agree, except for the highlighted word.  'Sane' goes a little too far.

That thread was pure gold for about 20 or 30 pages, but then the quality declined after that.

Absolutely favorite? Probably "traffic signals (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=5944.0)". Just encompasses a lot of the things I like about traffic lights: how they operate, where they're placed, who makes them, old vs new ones, etc.

The traffic control board contains over 4300+ of my 11000+ posts, so anything in that category I love to talk about. I also enjoy the "Crash Prone Modern Roundabouts (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=15546.0)" thread because I think roundabouts are very interesting. As well, I enjoy the "Double left turns with permissive phasing (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=17051.0)" thread, since I think those are cool and the thread contains a bunch of locations around the US and a nice discussion about their pros and cons.

I don't necessarily find funny discussions to be my favorite. I like to have fun here, obviously, but my favorite threads are those where legit, serious discussions occur.

I honestly didn't have a favorite thread until the creation of the Guess That Bridge thread. This has the potential to become something special, it could really make you think.

Speaking of that thread, it's been 5 days since anyone posted so I might try it..

Not US Holidays By Tiers
AARoads is on Wikipedia

Seriously though, I love all the threads about road oddities like weird concurrencies or Interstates/US Routes/State Routes that don't "fit in". I also enjoy reading about what roads/corridors people think should be upgraded (as long as the proposal is realistic and original - no FritzOwl nonsense or fictional North Carolina interstates for the 10 millionth time). I also like threads about control cities. Control cities, especially the far-off ones, have always fascinated me.

As for least favorite threads, I hate hearing people whine about the Patriots in the NFL threads. It's nonstop. Gets really old, and I'm not even a Pats fan.

For threads that are open right now...
- Minor things that bother you. I thought it would be locked quickly, but surprisingly it goes well, and never gets old.
- Funniest Street names. Again, it never gets old.
- Compilation: FritzOwl in one thread. I really enjoy your guys bashing FritzOwl over his crazy plans of turning every alley and trail into an Interstate.

However, my all-time favorite is "What is highest classification of road beside which you have urinated?" :bigass:.

I can think of a few.

Best of Road Pictures  -  most of the photography there is awesome.  Makes me want to visit some of those areas.
The Guess That Bridge Thread  -  I also have an interest in bridges specifically, and again, lots of good photography.  I'm hoping it doesn't die off.

I also have a soft spot for:
FritzOwl in One Thread  -  Just to sit back and watch people get bent out of shape over some of his plans.  I suspect Ol' Fritz is just trolling us and is amused by our responses.  (I will admit to a few posts, mostly asking legitimate questions that I know he will dodge and just say that it fits his plans)

And some silly ones like CNGL-Leudimin mentioned like What is highest classification of road beside which you have urinated?   (Interstate for me!)

He was last active on March 31.  I remember a post from him that day that "seemed to jump the shark" - even for him - and it was removed next time I looked.  So ... who knows?  *shrug*

He's banned. (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?action=mlist;sort=real_name;start=3800) (link won't work forever, but it will be good for at least a few weeks)

This one (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=14728.0). Always an entertaining re-read, even on the umpteenth time.  :D
