Title: How long were you the newest member of the forum?
Post by: idk on October 15, 2020, 01:22:16 AM
When you first joined this forum, how long were you the newest member?

For me, it's 5 days.

About a minute ...  :bigass:

Actually, the next person after me was about fourteen hours later, but has never been active.

Never really thought about this. According to the member list, just a hair under two days:

jakeroot (formerly 'jake'): 21 Oct 2013 @ 20:34:51
jardine: 23 Oct 2013 @ 18:28:51

There were actually 3 others that joined the forum on the same day as me, and one the next day. I'm listed last, and it's not alphabetical, so I have to assume I was the newest overnight.  :D

You can check each user's profile to find the exact moment of registration. In my case, for example, bzakharin was the next member to register after I did. Our profiles show that I registered at 12:48:52 and bzakharin registered at 14:58:58 on the same day, so two hours, ten minutes, and six seconds later.

Aha! So my original theory turned out to be correct. I was last on that date, registering at 11:22:39 PM
Paulinator66 was next to register at 02:51:04 PM the next day. So, my technical answer is that I was the newest member for a span of 13h 28m 25s.

But the reality is that the vast majority of new registrants don't even end up making a post, much less contributing regularly.
For context, I joined in 2017. There are only 5 users that joined in the entire year 2017 that have gone on to become regular contributors: myself, Flint1979, ilpt4u, Roadgeekteen, and US 89.

According to the member list, I registered on May 4, 2020, at 8:55pm. The next new member was 59 minutes later (Sani, at 9:54pm). So I was the newest member for just under an hour.

Because of me, Route66Fan was the newest member for only 10 hours. I was the newest member for 3 days, 1 hour, or until Damajah joined. If you only count people who have posted, another 1 day and 1 hour can be added.

While most of us had a barely-active member join shortly after, I do enjoy seeing some of you post that a still-active member was the next or previous one to join.  For example, hobsini2 followed by formulanone.

Also, 1995hoo and bzakharin.
It's going to happen more with original members, because basically everyone that signed up in the early days wanted to be a contributor.

Usually a forum has loads of one-post and zero-post members, so it's kind of rare. AARoads already had a forum for about 2 years after I'd joined; though I think I'd lurked for at least two weeks beforehand...

How do you figure that out? I registered on March 29, 2019 at 8:39 AM. I remember that day very well. I was somewhere in the Nebraska panhandle going east on I-80 (not driving, I can assure you). The weather was awful and the roads were really slippery. Must have seen 20 cars in the ditch between the WY state line and Omaha.
Edit: Okay, it looks like I was the newest member for 1 day, 6 hours and 34 minutes. "Oldiesmann" was next to register on March 30. He has only three posts and has not logged in since Februrary. The next somewhat active member to register was SoCal Kid on March 31.

Two weeks? I was a lurker for at least a year. This thread about runaway truck ramps, of all things, was the thread that brought me to the forum in late 2017 or early 2018: https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=16976.0

Go to the 'MEMBERS' area of the site, then sort by 'Date Registered'.  Find the page with your join date, and look at the profile of the one who joined right after you.

Almost 1 1/2 days.

What's really strange is that the user IDs are mostly consecutive except between 6/10/11 and 7/13/13, where they jump around a lot. When the stats were still open, tens of people per day registered between these dates, and before and after, the numbers are what they really should be.

I think he may have deleted his own account on the way out the door. His original account name was "voyager". The details are a little hazy to me because I wasn't an admin until after all this went down. (I volunteered to help get everything back up and running in the aftermath of that.)

Later, we needed to associate all of those posts with an account for some reason (I think because he was trying to come back with a bunch of sockpuppet accounts, maybe, and we wanted a base account to be able to ban?) so we made a new account and called it V'Ger as a Star Trek I reference. For a while it had a stupid-looking Neelix avatar too, but that seems to have disappeared at some point.

4 Hours, 25 Minutes.

Of active members, it would be 9 days before me, and 13 days after me.

Of interest; nearly half the people that have signed up have never posted.  I've probably done that a few times on other sites to see some information on a forum not available to the public.  Excel assistance forums (which we've talked about in the past) may be a good example of one for me, although my problems has been so unique that eventually I may ask a question.  I guess it's not a unique issue though, and some people do like to lurk just to take in the info presented.

The time between 1/17/09 and now divided by 3954 is 26.04 hours (thank you, WolframAlpha).

Assuming a Poisson distribution:

1 hour or less: 3.8% (probably not accurate because very few people register in the middle of the night)
24 hours or more: 40%
48 hours or more: 16%
72 hours or more: 6.3%

Keep in mind that banned members (there are 43 of them) do not show up in the members list. This includes one-day spammers but not spammers who never had their account activated.

For me, just a day and a half, in late July 2009.

I started off as a lurker, since I hadn't yet given up on the Usenet group misc.transport.road. It took me almost two months after I registered before I made my first post on this forum. So my short-lived "newest member" status was completely irrelevant to me.

Quote from: hbelkins on October 16, 2020, 08:36:27 PMI'm just trying to decipher how Jeremy managed to trick the forum software into displaying his join date as 9/11/01.

Many (perhaps most) forum software packages allow users with administrator rights to specify joining dates that don't correspond to the day and time they actually joined the forum.  Jeremy's join time is 12:00:00 AM (in other words, no match on any of the key times on 9/11).

On this forum, I am user number 336, and joined 2009-03-04 09:56:33.  This was 4 hours, 9 minutes, and 41 seconds before Slinky (user number 337), who has three posts, and almost a full 24 hours after Jimcfs (join time 9:58 AM and change but on the previous day), who has zero posts and has not logged in since 2009.

My average is about 600 posts a year.  When the member roster is sorted by join date and is displayed 100 at a time (the non-mobile default), I am actually not the most prolific on the page on which I appear--that distinction belongs to Sparker, who joined four days after I did and has over 7000 posts.

By my count, we have 191 members with aggregate post count of 1000 or greater, and a bit over 2000 with one post or more.

The Super Bowl was also on 02/02/2020. 02/02/2020 was also the only palindrome date of the year, the first palindrome date since 2012, and there will not be another one for 1,010 years.

02/02/2020 was also the only palindrome date of the year, the first palindrome date since 2012, and there will not be another one for 1,010 years.

2012 only had a palindrome in DMY format (not MDY format), and 12/02/2021 is a palindrome, as is 03/02/2030.

More than one palindrome date a year is impossible within a single format.

I had about 3 hours where I was the newest. A user by the name of Signal joined the same day as me, and actually happens to be online as I write this! Impressive, considering I joined 7 years ago, when I was a 12 year old.

About 17-1/2 hours.  But I've been hanging around in the background since the beginning.

That's upsetting to hear. Why is 12/02/2021 getting skipped next year?

Reverse leap year.

I was the newest for about an hour and a half on January 20, 2009 before agentsteel53 joined.

Looks like about 4 hours and 15 minutes.   Interestingly, three of us registered on 12/29/16, but then no one else registered for 4 days (1/2/17).  Also, no one registered the day before the three of us (12/28/16).

Almost 2 days exactly (2 days and 52 minutes)

Just under 12 hours, with the next member being a member who has never posted, but seems to have been lurking all this time since their last active date was 11 days ago.

Just checked the registry.  Wow, that was an eye-opening exercise for me.  Here are some numbers...

2: days I was the newest member

11: years since I joined the forum

97: number of posts -- For someone who logs in to the site at lunchtime almost every day, this is a startling low number.  Perhaps I should post more often?  It's for sure that I can say nothing in too many words as well as anybody, but will I actually do something about it?  (My Magic 8 Ball responds, "Don't count on it.")

Wow, your posts per year average might be lower than some people's posts per day averages.

Ten days. I was also the first new member to join during the Year From Hell, or as I've heard it's legally referred to, 2020.
