Title: Gas station towers that you can see from far away on a road
Post by: thspfc on October 16, 2020, 10:30:26 PM
It doesn't show up on GSV, but on a clear evening you can see the lights of a BP gas station tower in Endeavor, WI, from 6 miles away on I-39:

Other far distances?

On a trip to Beaumont a couple years ago, I remember seeing this Stuckey's sign from about 4 miles away at night, possibly from further:

Closer to home, at night you can see this (https://www.google.com/maps/@29.1961159,-95.4543794,3a,32.8y,191.37h,112.54t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sLF_V_DRB75XplVL8hzvDqQ!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo0.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3DLF_V_DRB75XplVL8hzvDqQ%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D6.09771%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192) Love's sign at FM 523 at TX 288 from this  (https://www.google.com/maps/@29.1449399,-95.4517504,3a,15y,356.04h,90.62t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sVow08aIUgkrhx-ktFF_swQ!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo3.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3DVow08aIUgkrhx-ktFF_swQ%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D75.56048%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192) bridge almost 4 miles away. I think I've even caught glimpses of it from the CR 220 interchange 5 miles away. That's the best I could come up with.

In Minnesota, leading brand Holiday Stationstore signs are often illuminated with neon blue borders (a fact they frequently mention in their advertisements, "look for the bright blue border!" ). At night you can easily pick out the I-35/27th Avenue location in Duluth from the top of Thompson Hill five miles away.

On I-70 EB, you used to be able to spot the Union 76 sign at the US-42/Plain City/London exit from a few miles away.  It might have only been so visible at night, though, since the sign itself was huge.  This was a "special" Union 76 truckstop, sort of an ancestor of the Pilot-type stations we have today.  Indeed, that place is now a TA Travel Plaza/BP combo.  Not sure if it's still visible from as far.

I remember that the Petro off exit 104 on I-95 in Carmel Church, Virginia could be seen for a few miles south of the interchange.

This is a phenomenon New Englanders know little about. I feel I don't see the huge towering signs that can be seen from a distance until getting into PA.

I know of a few of these signs (there are two Gulf signs at I-495 exit 42 even though one of the two is no longer a Gulf). However, everything is blocked by trees and houses in this area.

Breezewood is visible from up on the mountain at PA Turnpike Mile 164.6

This probably puts it about 4 miles from "town"

Nor does many southerners, especially those who live in or near mountains. Though I could see the sign for McDonalds off I-81 in Rural Retreat, VA for a few miles before getting to it while coming up VA-749
