For California it's actually presently CA 225 which has 0.091 miles left as part of a State Maintained rail underpass.

* Idaho: ID-61 (0.740 mi)

This is incorrect: SH 79 is even shorter at 0.257 miles. https://apps.itd.idaho.gov/apps/milepointlog/logs/stateHW/SH_79_MPLog.pdf

It is now unsigned and amounts to little more than the bridge over I-84 at exit 168, but you can't really argue it shouldn't count since it's listed with all the other state routes on ITD's milepoint log page (https://apps.itd.idaho.gov/apps/milepointlog/).

Fixed.

EDIT: Strange, hunh. Wikipedia says ID-79 is 2.564 miles, which would put it at fifth-shortest in the state.

Wikipoo is wrong. 79 used to go north from I-84 to SH 25 in Jerome, but that road was returned to local jurisdiction several years back. However, the state still maintains the interchange roads, and for whatever reason ITD kept SH 79 around as the designation for the interchange cross-road instead of redesignating it as a ramp.

Still in the Postmile Tool on Castillo Street, I actually have an article about it:

https://www.gribblenation.org/2019/08/california-state-route-225-zombie.html?m=1

For what it's worth just because the California Transportation Commission approved a relinquishment doesn't mean that the localities involved will/have to accept it.  With the underpass on Castillo the City of Santa Barbra apparently didn't want to take it over.  It's just easier to maintain it under Route 225 rather than for Caltrans to swap it to Route 101 spur.  It's actually 0.081 miles and not what I cited above.

As for State Highways that are actually field signed, CA 77 is indeed the shortest in that category.

In Kentucky's case, it's because there is only one route numbering system. Virginia probably has more state routes than Kentucky, since nearly every road is state-maintained. Same for West Virginia.

Indeed posted.  I've been there several times, but it's been a while.  Brown historical NC-400 markers were posted back in 1985, and perhaps the faded one is original.  Of course, this was the 400th anniversary of the Lost Colony dropped off by Sir Walter Raleigh.  This year, historians formally debunked the Lost Colony concept with proof that some of the remains of the Croatans had Western European DNA.  But early settlers already suspected this, as they had recorded native Americans with light skin and blue eyes when they arrived in the late-1600s.

I assume you want primary routes with this...

SC 179 (0.9 mi) is the shortest SC route
VA 300Y is 0.04 miles and signed - https://goo.gl/maps/JDHmTKTibTdzNX8M7
If you insist on a route signed with the official route marker, then VA 349 at 0.12 miles is I believe it.  VA 353 was once signed when it was only 78 feet long.

NC 400 used to be better posted.  In addition to the brown sign cited there is still a normal NC 400 END assembly at US 64 Bus.

South Carolina would be just like LA and KY except in 1946 they elected to create the secondary highway system (still maintained by the state) instead of 1 primary system to cover any road deemed to be maintained by the state.  Had they not, they would've also needed 4-digit routes eventually as they were almost out of 3 digit routes despite using a crap-ton of ALT designations.

OK-98S is unsigned, if it matters. I think the shortest signed route is 40A.

SR 437 (0.106 mi, shorter than SR 160) is signed (https://goo.gl/maps/GUpkCnJzyv1YPCgt6).

I'm not sure if SR 61A is signed, but if it is, I don't think it should be discounted because of its suffix.

The three Maryland routes are all unsigned.  And I doubt that it is an exact tie since their length can be expressed as feet.  0.01 mile ≈ 53 feet, but assuming 0.01 is rounded to the nearest hundredth of a mile, could represent anywhere from 26-79 feet.

If you want a signed route, I can suggest MD 911 at 0.21 miles.  Not promising that it is the absolute shortest signed route (not motivated enough to check for sure).

For Nebraska, there are numerous spur and link routes which are shorter than N-110. Some of them are probably not signed, but some are, especially if it's a spur.

Shortest signed is HI 32A, 0.41 mi. Shorter unsigned routes include 442 on Lanai (0.03 mi, per the 2012 straight-line diagrams; probably unsigned, but neither I nor GSMV's camera car have been to Lanai lately), and 7401 (0.10 mi., per 2012 SLD).

Wikipedia's list seems to include a lot of unsigned county roads, with numbers assigned only for GIS purposes.

CT should have a qualifier for signed routes.  The shortest state route if you count unsigned, numbered state roads is SR 910 in Glastonbury; an extremely short section of Oak St between the CT 2 West off ramp and CT 94.  It is a whopping 0.02 mi. long. There are a couple of others that are in the 0.05-0.06 range.

For Washington, I don't believe SR-41 should count. It is only signed as ID-41, because the very first portion straddles the ID-WA state line, until the road curves into Idaho fully.

WA 41 is official, because it's covered by the WSDOT SRweb (http://srview.wsdot.wa.gov/srweb/srweb.htm) (in the EA region.  I can't link any further within that site.)  Even though Washington State Highways (http://washingtonhighways.blogspot.com/2009/09/washington-state-route-41.html) says it only covers the southbound lanes, the SRweb camera covers both directions.  Washington maintains separate mileage for their SR 41.  And WA 41, named for ID 41 is (wait for it) 0.41 miles long.  You can't make this stuff up.

It's certainly official, but WA 213 is shorter, so WA 41 is only notable if it counts as "signed". Which it shouldn't, imo, because there exist no Washington head shields with 41 in them.

The next shortest is WA 704 at 0.63 miles, which is signed. It was planned to be longer, but only one block has ever been constructed.

I've been told that AR 933-2 north of Mountain View is signed, it's just barely north of the AR 5/9/14 intersection and it's literally just a boat ramp to the White River. It's about 200 feet long.

Mississippi Highway 888 (at 0.13 miles) seems to be the shortest signed route in its state, thanks to the work of froggie.

Mississippi 761 is 0.129 miles, according to the MDOT log, so it might be shorter.

As much as I like TM, one must remember its mileages are inexact.

In the case of road mileage, I rule out measurements greater than one significant digit to the right of the decimal, anyhow. Some places use the center for the zero point, others use the edge of the highway, making the 52 feet (or thereabouts) a "shruggable" margin of error for those of us who are not engineers.

A 52 foot margin-of-error can still be significant when looking at official distances.  According to VTrans, VT 26 is approximately 69 feet in length.

...and to VTrans' credit, there are VT 26 trailblazers.

Of course, in 2015 at least, one of them was in error....

Ohio 822?!?  :hmmm:  How did I miss this all these years?
I thought we had all settled on Oh 723 (extended exit ramp from I-70 to US 22/40, west of Cambridge)

Are they including bannered routes? If so, there are a couple SPUR highways in Wisconsin that are shorter than WI-243.
