Title: I-95 Route 34 Split

Here is an old pic of the CT-34 exit and the preparation of the I-91/I-95 JCT.

Look closely as there are only three lanes that continue, currently there are 4.  Two for I-91 & two for I-95 at this point.  Five if you count the CT-34 exit ramp.

Does that mean that CT widened this section at some point or the very least restriped it at some point?

I-84 was 6 lanes at the time of this pic, now it's 8-lanes and the Trumbull St. exit is gone, I would imagine this was widened back in 1990 with the completion of the huge I-91 flyover ramp. Any corrections?

While I'm not sure about the Exit 47/48 split lane configuration, I do remember restriping that was done sometime in the late 80s/early 90s....

On I-95 NB, traffic entering from Exit 47 (Rt 34 connector) had their own lane and did not have to merge, while traffic entering from Exit 48 (from I-91 South, on the left) had to merge.  I remember the day it was advertised in the Hartford Courant, in a weekly column dedicated to road work.  It makes a lot more sense when they restriped it, but in reality, both onramps should (and soon will after completion of the new bridge) have their own lane without the need to merge.


Regarding I-84EB, I'm not sure if any widening took place at the location of the sign.  See this link to Google Maps and note the lack of shoulders... so the EB roadway would have been 3 lanes with the exit only lane to Trumbull Street...

The Trumbull Street exit appears to be the same exit as today's present Main Street, since today's exit intersects Trumbull Street first, then Main Street.   A

I think some reconfiguration took place here, as in the picture the ramps are more curved and in google they are more straight.

On a side note: somebody told me that Exit 23 on I-84 EB in Waterbury used to be a left exit.  The area of I-84 that is still cement was the area that was reconfigured.  Anybody have any more info on this?

Re I-84 in Waterbury, exit 23:

The two I-84 roadways were reversed in this area: eastbound to the left of westbound. The left exit from I-84 EB connected to Union St without having to cross over the WB lanes (because the main roadway already had crossed).

This was in effect from the freeway opening c. 1959 to its reconstruction c. 1973. That project removed the crossovers and left exits, and widened I-84 to 6 thru lanes and EB C/D lanes.

UConn / CT state library used to host some 1965 aerial photos that showed this clearly (http://cslib.cdmhost.com/custom/aerials.php) but those appear to be offline now.

This is one of several areas that back in the day were considered good ideas, but have since been redone:

Here I'm disregarding other large changes that were done mainly to increase capacity, e.g. I-91/CT 20, I-95/CT 32

I also looked at the Rochembeau Bridge near Exit 13 in Newtown, today it is a 6-lane bridge (still striped as 2-lanes..although that would change if the planned widening is completed) and an Exit 13 EB exit and a WB entrance.

On the 1965 ariel map, Exit 13 is a full interchange, why would they degrade it and make it a partial interchange?

Also, the awful short ramps of Exit 12 were still in place here. Exit 12 was deleted after the construction project.  In 1978?

Also, look at the I-95 NB & CT 184 split, it was striped with an option lane in 1965....today it is not.
