Title: What state has the worst/most boring interstates?

I'm going to go with Connecticut.

I'm going to go with Nebraska. If "worst" includes pavement quality and lane configurations trying to force you onto toll roads, Oklahoma.

Connecticut isn't even the most boring state on the I-95 corridor. The Carolinas are a flat, pine ridden bore.

Oh I was just going off what I've been on, never been on I-95 in the Carolinas.

Even though I'm originally from there and I hate to admit this, I'm going with IL, considering the notoriously bad shape they're always in.

Of the states I've been to, I found Rhode Island's interstates to be the least interesting, but perhaps that's unfair because it's such a small state and a small sample size.

Pennsylvania has a lot of weird, distasteful interstates. I dislike almost all of them, especially the narrow toll roads, I-81 in the Scranton area, and I-83. Yet, they have some great freeways, but they're not interstates. In fact, my three favorite PA freeways are all non-interstates: US 15 north of Williamsport, US 22/322 north of Harrisburg, and PA 33 between Wind Gap and I-80.

Ohio is top-notch for the most part; love the six lane portions of I-71 and I-80/90, the I-271 powerhouse, and most of the other Cleveland freeways.
The Indiana Toll Road, meanwhile makes my eyes bleed. I do believe I could draw something better by hand.

I feel like the separations between worst and second tier are razor thin. Minnesota has boring ones outside of about two short spots. ND/SD aren't scenic either. Oh, but 90 gets within binoculars distance of the Badlands and 94 looks slightly cooler in TRNP than it did 20 miles east? Kansas has the Flint Hills and Nebraska has some badlands on 80 near the WY border.

Interstates just aren't really where you go for scenery.

My vote goes to Nebraska.

I-35 through the Flint Hills and I-70 east of Lawrence disqualify Kansas, in my opinion.

Similarly, I-57 and I-24 south of Goreville disqualify Illinois.

Illinois. I don't care about 57 or 24, it gets dull over there FAST.

Don't knock PA's Interstates just yet. Numbering considerations aside, I-99 offers a beautiful drive on a modern Interstate highway.  https://www.google.com/maps/@40.7304497,-78.1329799,3a,75y,25.95h,97.74t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sc41IBjs36xzYgfpO_W2daA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en

And seeing this part of I-376 makes up for the rest of the road:
https://www.google.com/maps/@40.4376612,-80.0134154,3a,75y,72.86h,81.88t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sfEsmcldKVeJ8keb2nYjlBg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en

And while a lot of the PA Turnpike is old and narrow, the stretch between New Stanton and Blue Mountain has some beautiful scenery.

And sometime in the future, US 15 north of Williamsport will be part of I-99...

I'd have to say Illinois for overall.
Some of Indiana is blah like I-65 north of Lafayette or I-64 (entire length).
I drove from Louisville to St. Louis one time and took I-64 of course, the stretch from where present day I-69 crosses I-64 to Mount Vernon, Illinois is horribly boring.

Illinois takes the cake though I have more fun driving on I-75 in Georgia than I do any Interstate in Illinois.

North Dakota.  Boring landscape, high winds (because I-94 seems to be on the top of all the hills), few services, and straight roads.  I nearly fall asleep every time I drive the state.

Louisiana. I haven't been on I-10 much, but I-20/I-220, I-12, and I-49 are very boring. Not to mention the road quality, which is improving recently, but is still awful.

From Carbondale, I prefer driving IL 13->US 45->IL 1 to get to I-64 at the Wabash River over using I-57 and I-64 in IL to get to Southern Indiana. That stretch of I-57 sucks (will be better when the 6-laning project up to Mt Vernon/I-64 is completed, hopefully sometime this decade) and I-64 is pretty boring all across IL, at least until the Metro East area/near Scott AFB/Mid-America Airport

Doesn't hurt that a good portion of the IL 13->US 45->IL 1 route is (at least) 4 lane divided rural expressway that isn't the most heavily traveled route, either

I did make the trip along I-64 from St Louis to Southern Indiana during a major snow storm/blizzard at night, probably about 15 years ago. THAT made an adventurous night of driving! I don't even know if the road was officially open when I drove it - almost zero traffic and snow removal wasn't even being attempted. My plan was "stay in the middle of the flat section of snow, cause that should be the roadway"

The parts of Illinois that I've been on that are off the Interstate aren't as bad as some areas of Illinois. I prefer the Little Egypt section now, I use to prefer Chicago but I'm tired of big cities and the whole entrance to Chicago from the south is so blah it's ridiculous and that part of Indiana that borders Chicago is ok but outside of a small area there it's boring. Then again I get this creepy feeling every time I'm in Lake County, Indiana well the north part of it anyway.

I-55 and 57 are both pretty boring in Illinois but I think I have a section of I-55 in Missouri that tops anything in Illinois as far as boredom. It's in the bootheel part around the Arkansas border I was driving it about 5-6 years ago and had to get off the highway because I was so bored of being on it. I got off on US-412 took that into Arkansas and then took US-49 down to I-40. It was a little better than being on I-55.

Hmm, only segment in Oregon that would qualify is I-84 from US 730 out to Pendleton, and that's just a transitional blip.
(I don't even count I-5 from Eugene to Albany here, as that's become a 'short' segment for me; certainly feels shorter than the more scenic I-5 from Salmon Creek to Longview )

Wisconsin's probably rank somehwere in the middle. I-39, I-41, and I-43 are pretty bland their entire lengths, unless we're factoring in the presence of stack interchanges, in which case the latter two would be quite interesting. But I-90 and I-94 are fairly scenic, especially between Madison and La Crosse/Black River Falls.

I-70 in Kansas is one of the dullest interstates in the country.

Having driven all of Kansas' I-70 multiple times growing up (I grew up near the Colorado line and had family in KC), I agree that most of I-70 is quite boring.  However, the stretch between Topeka and KC–especially east of Lawrence–is pleasantly scenic.

Connecticut isn't even the most boring state on the I-95 corridor. The Carolinas are a flat, pine ridden bore.

It's soooo boring driving through all those pine trees for hundreds of miles. The only thing worse is driving through sound walls except that sound walls don't go on for hundreds of miles. The worst part is that you can tell that in a ton of cases those were planted since you can look through them and see that the stands are only a few dozen feet wide. Does anyone here remember times before the trees were mature and they scenery was more interesting? Even in the '80s the tree wall was 40-50 feet tall. Zzzzzzzzzzzz

I-95 (at least the section south of I-26) in SC had so much Elefantenrennen (a semi going 60 mph passing a semi going 59.9, using all 2 lanes in your direction).

On the plus side, I have a bucket list of collecting photos of all interstate and US route numbers; SC and GA had enough along I-95 to make a day trip from Jax worthwhile.

Yeah, seriously.  I remember driving I-85 in VA, bored out of my mind, only to snatch a peek through the wall to notice much more interesting farm fields beyond.  What is it with the southeast and tree walls?  Are they trying to give everyone highway hypnosis?  The only things that are even remotely interesting on I-95 in South Carolina are Florence and Lake Marion.  Even the I-26 interchange is an anticlimatic blip.

I regard "worst" and "most boring" to be two totally different matters. A road can be in outstanding shape, have a high speed limit, be an easy drive, and yet still be mind-numbingly boring. vdeane mentions I-85 in Virginia, and I'd say most of that is a very good road that is very boring (all the more so for me personally because I used to drive it regularly and I just plain got tired of going the same way). Likewise, a road can be anything but boring due to things like what you can see from the road or even something like traffic volume requiring your intense concentration on driving, yet still be a horrible road due to poor design, bad maintenance, etc. I'd view I-278 as an outstanding example of a horrible road that is by no means boring.

What gives with all the "worst" threads?  What about the best/most exciting?  My nomination for that would be I-70 west of Denver.  The scenery of the front range and the high country are absolutely breathtaking.

Talk about an unpopular opinion (not)  :-D :-D

For real though, I've heard people say that I-70 through the San Rafael is better but I can't imagine that's possible. I-70 from Denver to Grand Junction is on a completely different level compared to the rest of the Interstate system IMO.

With six lanes all the way to the MA line, surely it's not traffic that's the issue. Is it that boring?

I actually disagree with Connecticut. The western part of I-84 is quite attractive, and the I-95 bridges in New Haven and New London, as well as the part in East Haven, are rather interesting.

It is traffic that's the issue. I-84 is horribly congested during rush hour, and Connecticut also has later PM rush hour than most states due to NYC commuters.

Oh, sorry, I misread. He's talking about western CT, I was thinking of eastern CT, which is the part that's entirely that's six laned. It looks like a very nice road from Manchester to I-90.

Parts of Connecticut at least has hills, which is both interesting and enough to move it out of the states with "most boring interstates" category. Given how flat and boring most of the Southeast section of I-95 is, it's enough to put it in the upper half of exciting states on that corridor.

Well, at least it's concentrated with exits.

You should travel I-80 in the West someday.
I've done that more than once.  At least there is scenery.  And, last time coming from Nevada into Utah -- tumbleweeds all over the highway.

Texas has some boring roads.  I have not yet driven the most notable one from San Antonio to El Paso, but drove I-35, I-30, I-20 (east of Dallas from Shreveport), and I-10 from SA to SH 99 plus I-37.

I'd venture I-5 between Redding and Eugene and I-84 through the Gorge are some of the few that have the chance of competing.

To me, the most boring state for Interstates has to be Mississippi. Especially I-55. Easily the most bored I've ever been on a long trip. I actually sort of enjoyed I-70 through Kansas, though I've only driven it once.

At least there's nice scenery while you sit in gridlock because of a series of fender benders through Stroudsburg!

The highways down in South Jersey on the pines get pretty boring, but that's pretty much the same situation as the entire Eastern Seaboard.

Louisiana. I haven't been on I-10 much, but I-20/I-220, I-12, and I-49 are very boring. Not to mention the road quality, which is improving recently, but is still awful.

Yeah I'm from Louisiana originally and totally agree. I 10 isn't very fascinating either except in New Orleans and some of the bridges between Baton Rouge and new Orleans
And there's that boring 20 mile bridge begeeen Baton Rouge and Lafayette. I've always hated the drive between my parents' house in Mississippi and my house in Houston.

When I used to drive with my friends from Louisiana to Connecticut, the worst for me was probably Ih 81 through Virginia. Ugh. Boring and there was nothing for hours. Didn't find IH 84 in Connecticut very enjoyable either. Except maybe through Hartford.
IH 59 for its entire length is pretty boring too.

My vote goes to Nebraska.

I-35 through the Flint Hills and I-70 east of Lawrence disqualify Kansas, in my opinion.

I seem to recall the section of I-70 west of Topeka close to K-99 being better than the Turnpike east of Lawrence.  Streetview (https://goo.gl/maps/Fhy1kHp4FwVpYFff6)

Similarly, I-57 and I-24 south of Goreville disqualify Illinois.

Between I-57 and the Goreville exit isn't that bad on I-24.  Though the scenery on I-24 kind of dies at the descent prior to the Big Bay/New Columbia interchange.

I-57 south of Goreville is better than a lot of Illinois's interstates for scenery, but it is not as good as I-24, and I would question if it's better than I-72 just west of the Illinois River.

Even I-74 has a few decent valleys between Peoria and Galesburg, and one between Peoria and Bloomington - Normal to look forward to.

I regard "worst" and "most boring" to be two totally different matters. A road can be in outstanding shape, have a high speed limit, be an easy drive, and yet still be mind-numbingly boring.

I second this - I recall I-80 in Nebraska not being that scenic between I-76 and around Seward, but at least having decent pavement.  I don't recall I-70 across Kansas having bad pavement either the last time I drove it.  On the other hand I recall scenic portions of I-70 in Utah having signs for "road damage" and rough pavement.

Boring-wise, KS and NE take top (or is it bottom?) prize, although I will acknowledge that I-80, once east of Lincoln, can get a bit interesting; the same for I-70 one state south east of Topeka (but maybe I'm just a sucker for more greenery).  As far as quality: pavement, configuration, and generally stupid shit, right now my home state of CA might be a finalist -- but my most recent experiences in NM and TX would put them well up on the list.

I-10 in Louisiana isn't exciting, but building a functional and kinda boring interstate over hundreds of miles of waterlogged mud is pretty remarkable IMO. I also think PA's highways are underrated given its central position in a number of long haul routes and needing to maneuver fairly challenging terrain engineering-wise.

Michigan, for pavement "quality" and general feeling of terror when driving them, is pretty bad. Kentucky's highways (I've driven I-71 and I-65) haven't really impressed me much either.

I-41 through the Niagara Escarpment and Kettle Moraine area (between Slinger and Fond du Lac) is pretty interesting, I-43's transit of the Alpine Valley just NE of US 12 is a Wisconsin classic.   I also consider I-39 between Portage and Coloma to be a 'must drive'.

I agree, too, with your I-90 assessment and I also enjoy my drives on I-94 west of Tomah.

---------------

OTOH, IMHO, the most boring and worst I-routes overall in a state?

- Delaware.

I-80 from WY/NE state line to Lincoln is pretty boring. I'd also argue that I-80 in WY isn't great, but there's some more elevation and terrain at parts that make it better.
I-35 from south of Kansas City to Oklahoma City is pretty boring. Did most of that leg at night, so I might feel differently in the day.
I-10 from Jacksonville to Pensacola is, outside of a quick jaunt through Tallahassee, nothing but endless pine trees.

I enjoy I-35 through the Flint Hills at night, but that might just be because I'm usually on my way back from a long Minneapolis—Wichita drive, and the hills and curves keep me awake.  But yeah, it's a LOT more scenic during the daylight, especially during certain times of the year.

South of the KS/OK state line, though, you can keep it!

I clinched IN-46 last time I was in Indiana. I went to Terre Haute and then proceeded to head east. I wanted to enter Brown County again (I had already clinched that earlier this year) since I love the scenery there. It's the best county in Indiana IMO. I loved driving that road and it's my first state highway clinch in Indiana of a highway more than 100 miles long.

I also rode on the newer I-69 south of Indy. I felt a different vibe driving it maybe because I knew I was south of Indy and was heading into some new territory. I had to do a jog to go clinch a couple Indiana counties so I got off at US-231 and headed north for a little while bypassed Linton and took IN-54 back to US-41 south. Then took a combo of IN-550, IN-67, IN-358, IN-57 and IN-56/61 back to I-69. So I'm missing a 41 mile stretch between exits 46 and 87.

Right Brown County State Park I think is the most popular state park in Indiana and by far the largest state park (about 24 square miles). For the longest time I had a picture I took at Brown County State Park as my background on my laptop but I have another background on there now.

I clinched Brown County in June of this year. When it came time to hit Brown County I was on I-69 heading toward Bloomington and had already clinched Monroe County so I skipped that and put in Brown County. As soon as I started getting into the county I thought this is a really scenic area that I like. So I came upon signs for Yellowwood State Forest and took a left onto Yellowwood Road I remember a bridge at the end of the road took a left and came upon Yellowwood Lake there were some people fishing but they didn't bother me and I didn't bother them. I was on that road and headed north not knowing for sure where I was headed and came back upon IN-45 and headed toward Lake Lemon on the Brown County side. I was at a wildlife viewing area where no one else was even around.

As far as Brown County State Park I also spent some time there and loved it. It's almost as big as a medium sized city. IMO though Brown County and the surrounding counties are really nice. I like the areas of Indiana south of Indy, north of Indy it just doesn't have the same vibe for me.

South of the KS/OK state line, though, you can keep it!

Oklahoma City to Kansas City is a trip I make at least once a (normal) year, so I have Opinions™ about it.

The section from Emporia to Kansas City isn't what I'd call notably scenic, but there's enough hills and trees and fields and towns to look at that it's not boring.

The Flint Hills gets most of the attention along this stretch, but it's almost too much of a good thing–there's not much to look at besides the Flint Hills since KTA maintains that part of I-35 and they're pretty parsimonious with the exits even in the more populated areas.

South of Wichita is pretty bland, and it gets even worse the further south you go. I-35 north of Guthrie is probably Oklahoma's least scenic rural Interstate. Here, I have the opposite experience as you–this is my "home stretch" and it never feels great going southbound. Northbound, it's okay, because the excitement of just setting out on the trip, and the approaching state line, always masks the dullness of it.

I-55 in AR. It's creepy asf, especially at night. Even the outer roads and the slip ramps too.

Funny because I felt some type of creepiness driving on I-55 in Missouri south of Sikeston.

I was going to add that part. From Sikeston/Miner to West Memphis. Those fields, woods, ditches, and service roads have seen some shit. The whole route in that corridor needs to be rebuilt.

Yeah it just seems so remote and creepy like. I think the fact that I had just been through Cairo and was looking to get off the Interstate at that point triggered me even more as creepy it just has that vibe and I thought Memphis in general did too. I headed toward Little Rock when I saw I-40 and the ride through there was a tad bit more interesting put much less creepy.

I'm not sure it's got such a strange feeling to it that it's impossible to figure out. I think it might win for creepiest stretch of Interstate highway maybe that can be a thread of it's own.

I dread driving on I-90 across eastern South Dakota.  It's as bad as it gets.

But I-90 across western South Dakota is about as good as it gets for "plains crossing" interstates.

Chris
I feel like there's a general theme for the Interstates that cross the Plains, particularly 70, 80, 90, and 94. The most boring and flattest stretch is the one bookended by the junctions with US-83 on the west and US-81 or US-77 on the east. Maybe it's just me being relatively unfamiliar with the Wild West-type landscape of the high plains, but even I-80 in Nebraska/eastern Wyoming (and the entirety of I-76 in NE and CO) becomes somewhat interesting west of US-83.

Based on the measure that most people care about when talking about quality of highways, congestion, I'd say California has the worst.

Not even close if you are going by that criterion.  Things like the Kennedy Expressway and pre-Ultimate I-4 were infinitely worse commutes than any individual California Freeway I've used for work.  Even ancient stuff like CA 99 isn't even in the discussion for worst commute freeways.

The title of this thread is what state has the worst interstates. Illinois and Florida as a whole don't have the same congestion issues as California. Even California's rural interstates have major traffic, I-15 near the Nevada border for example.

The title of this thread is what state has the worst interstates. Illinois and Florida as a whole don't have the same congestion issues as California. Even California's rural interstates have major traffic, I-15 near the Nevada border for example.

On Sundays when everyone is coming home from Las Vegas is when I-15 is having problems which are largely due to the poor placement of the new Ag station.  It's rare I-15 between Barstow-Primm is overwhelmed otherwise during the rest of the week.  Even on Friday/Saturday I-15 northbound traffic into Las Vegas doesn't have to contend with a obstructing Ag station and tends to keep moving.  By comparison I-17 is on a Sunday when the Sedona 500 is going on to get a like scenario due to Sunset Point acting as a choke point down hill grade.

And to that end I disagree with your assessment.  Yes, California has a ton of high ranking congested freeways but at least there are a great many of them (a ton are even State Highways) compared to the likes of places like Chicago.  Everyone in Chicago dog piles onto the few existing freeways corridors, especially those designated as the free expressways.  Similarly everyone piled onto I-4 in Orlando given it was the only free limited access corridor available for use.

Now none of this is an inference that commuting in California is good.  There are tons of corridors which were built during the 1950s-early 1970s which haven't had capacity expansions or redesigns since.  I live right off CA 99 which has for many years been the poster child for a functionally obsolete freeway.  Thing is, out of all the freeways I've commuted on in all the states I've lived/work I wouldn't rank anything California presently in the Top 5 worst.  I-405 would have been probably on the list a decade ago but the corridor has been improved and upgraded in the intervening years.

I would say Mississippi is pretty high on the boring scale, as well as my current state of residence: South Carolina.

Mississippi only has a very few slightly exciting stretches of urban freeway, which are I-55 in Jackson and Southaven (suburban Memphis), and I guess maybe I-20/59 through Meridian and parts of I-10 in the Gulfport/Biloxi area.  Otherwise every rural interchange looks sort of the same, you have trees in the median at the same intervals, and the foliage just doesn't change.

Sourh Carolina has a lot of those same qualities as Mississippi, except for I-85 which is a whole other animal due to it being mostly either urban or under major reconstruction.  I-20 and I-77 are major snooze fests, and you'd want to snooze on I-26 or I-95 if you had time to look at the scenery but the high traffic levels will keep you awake.  And my home area of Columbia has zero exciting urban stretches of highway.  Also, I would venture to guess that South Carolina has one of the smallest percentages of lighted freeways.  I think there are only two or three lighted stretches of roadway in Greater Columbia, and not one single bit of I-77's 90 mile run through SC is lit.

I-55 between Gardner and Springfield IL, sure. And I-65 between Gary and Indy.

And in Eastern Washington state, I-90 and I-82, are similarly flat and long.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Florida (or I missed it). 75 is a bore from Naples to Georgia. 10 is relentlessly boring from Duval to Pensacola and it goes on way longer than you think - there's 160 miles of it in Central Time Zone! Haven't done much 95 outside of Miami, Daytona, and Jax and those are fun, but I imagine there must be some boring stretches in between if 75 is any indication.

Mississippi has beautiful interstates. Yes, a bit boring, but only because they're forested like all the eastern interstates are.

Oklahoma is the answer when it comes to the distinct combo of poorly maintained and without much to look at. Even 70 in Kansas is somewhat stunning when you take into account the grandness of the High Plains.

I have found that OK is pretty scenic south and east of US-69.  It seems to be near the dividing line of the foothills of where the Ozarks and Ouachitas of Arkansas end and where the plains of the rest of the state begin, except for the tiny oasis of Arbuckles.  Count me in the minority as someone who finds nearly all interstates boring and avoids them except when necessary, the exceptions being the areas where the interstates were forced through canyons, such as I-70 in Glenwood Canyon in CO and I-90 through the panhandle of ID.

I-90 is only boring from George to about Sprague. The rest is full of interesting terrain and features: Snoqualmie Pass, the eastern slope forests, the Columbia Gorge at Vantage, the pine forests near Spokane.

I-82 goes through wine country and has some interesting terrain near Yakima and Kennewick.
