Title: Any examples of Coral signage in use, or at least designs of experiment?
Post by: Dustin DeWinn on December 04, 2020, 08:04:04 AM
The Forest Service, and I think one or two states were experimenting with coral signs.

As I understand it, and correct me if I'm wrong, but fluorescent pink is used instead and coral is no longer under consideration, but my question is this:

Are there mockups or photographs of either these signs in use, or at least depictions of how they were to be used?

Can't find any.

Illinois tollways used to use light blue, purple, and coral to delineate different methods of paying toll at toll booths.  Here are some pictures from Bill Burmaster's site for I-90 (http://www.billburmaster.com/rmsandw/illinois/interstate/90il.html), showing a toll booth approach using the three colors.  I would estimate the timeframe when these signs were used around 1998-2005.

Yep, I remember that toll signage from when I lived in the area.  Made it so easy to tell which lane to go through.

My first impression when I saw the post subject was for the material, not the color.  I was thinking of something like old Roman style markers carved out of coral or a coral-based sedimentary rock.

MerDOT uses them quite a bit, but they can't use exit tabs with them due to wave loading guidelines.

I'm glad that was in reply to someone who's likely to understand the joke.  Otherwise, it would have been a real head scratcher for sure.

Yeah, but they have excellent salt resistance.
