Title: MicroLED displays - future applications for DMS?
Post by: Pink Jazz on December 15, 2020, 11:01:41 PM
There is an emerging technology in the display world known as MicroLED, which uses microscopic LEDs to produce an image.

While OLED technology is impractical due to burn-in and poor legibility in sunlight, could MicroLED technology be the ultimate solution for the legibility of dynamic message signs?

i think MicroLED (or anything of a similar resolution) would be overkill. while current DMS designs could benefit from higher resolution, any of the technologies that are used for small displays (TVs, monitors, phones) are orders of magnitude smaller than you need.

for reference, search for a "TV viewing distance chart" - and then extrapolate the values out so 50ft is the closest distance you care about. you'll be in the range of inches per pixel instead of the hundreds of pixels per inch that technologies like MicroLED get you.
