Title: Was this ferry boat originally used on the Cape May Ferry?
Post by: roadman65 on February 14, 2021, 11:40:33 AM
The one and only time I took a trip on the Cross Sound Ferry from Orient Point, NY to New London,CT I was on this vessel named " The Cape Henlopen."

Now I remember a child taking the Cape May Ferry seeing a boat that was not like today" s fleet and the fact Cape Henlopen is at the Delaware entrance to the Delaware Bay, suggests that would be from there unless Long Island Sound has a cape with the same name.

Well, yes, considering that there is only one such place called that–though that is not the original name of the ship. In fact, the original name was "Buncombe County" ! Though, that name didn't last, and it was sold to the Norfolk Ferry across the Chesapeake, right before the CBBT was open. During that other short period, it was known as "Virginia Beach" . It was after the CBBT opened when it was finally sold to the Delaware Ferry, and then given its current name.
