Does anyone know when NH switched from an outline of the Old Man of the Mountain to a solid silhouette of OMOTM on thier highway signs?
in 1986, I remember seeing both kinds. I have seen a white square with a 1981 stamp and I could've sworn I've seen a 1984 as well but I can't place it.
interestingly, they switched the US markers much earlier, and repainted the backgrounds of quite a few of the older white square styles, but kept putting up new white-square state shields.
note "A81" stamp on the 9. The fact that the 202 is repainted is tough to see, but it is.
And believe it or not, there are still a fair amount of square shields left in the state. Check out these assemblies in Alton...

And this one in danger of replacement on the Spaulding Turnpike:

I don't have a good idea when they switched from the square to the Old Man - sometime between 1961 and 1975 or so.

When I was in NH in June 1998, all state shields were still done with just the outline. My next visit was in July 2000, and I found my first silhouette version of the state shield then.

maybe I'm just misremembering this style?

1983 Michael Summa photo.
the oldest photo we have of a white-square Old Man is from 1983, and the oldest black square is ... 2007. I'll see if Michael has some older photos of the two styles.

ouch on the compressed-font 135. The ability to stretch or shrink graphics easily (i.e. so easily that a semiconscious sign shop worker will "think" to do it, as opposed to substituting a different, narrower font) is relatively new; implying that that 135 shield is as well.

Probably won't come as a surprise, but I prefer changing the size or style of the font instead of the size or shape of the sign. That's why I hate the rectangular blanks for 3-digit US routes or 3- or 4-digit Kentucky state routes, and much prefer the square blanks with circles and narrower fonts.

I think that some rectangular 3 digit signs work better in some state than in others. For example, Pennsylvania's and New York's rectangular signs work well. North Carolina and Michigan should really invest in wider 3 digit signs. A narrow font inside a diamond is very hard to read... especially for 3 digit routes on a BGSs. North Dakota's and Alabama's wider 3 digit signs are awful. NH could probably get away with a wide version of its sign as long as the Old Man's face isn't distorted.
Occasionally, you'll find an inverted shield or something way out of the ordinary as well as NH shields go...

My fear with NH route signs is, since that the Old Man of the Mountain collapsed in 2003, that his profile will be removed from the highway shields. I'm predicting if that ever happens, NH will return to Massachusetts-style blank white shields- a step backward in the fight for state-distinguished route signs.

Even after the Old Man collapsed, the Old Man in the Mountain is something that people think of when they think of New Hampshire. So as long as the Old Man continues to be a symbol, I don't see NHDOT changing the shield design.
Sorry for rebooting an old post, but it appears as if the black background old man shield has been in style since at least 1994 according to this shield...

Given the left arrow below, I'm thinking it's actually southbound on one of the non-202 N/S streets.
US Route 202 and NH Route 9...Concord perhaps?
It's on a side street, note the one-way sign below. There aren't a lot of one-way streets in downtown Concord so I'm hopeful I can turn something up.
Is that NH 9 shield inside a US cutout made from an old STOP sign? It appears to have 3/4 of the word STOP in ghostly faded lettering in the background.
Considering the NH-103 shield, one would think that this assembly is in Hopkinton, but that makes no sense with the ONE WAY sign.

Where is this? I notice a lone davit pole street light in the background, these are not common in NH.
Exeter, NH:

Maybe with the Old Man of the Mountains gone now, New Hampshire has gone "symbol-less" on its shields? :-D

If you notice that, you should be able to notice the sign in the background...
On a side note, that US 202/NH 9/NH 103 photo exemplifies the problem with sign-only photos: you get no location...no context...no way for the end user to easily discern where the photo was taken. A far cry from the NH 106 photo.

Entertain the possibility that due to the low resolution of the photo, I couldn't make out that sign which I did in fact notice...

I think it is eastbound on one of the side streets. the 9/202 multiplex is only about 8 blocks, so it should be easy to find.

it's not. the 103 is totally mislocated.
and yes, these shields were made by the City of Concord on recycled STOP signs. I used to own a US-3 cutout that was even more overtly on top of a stop sign.

I drove every one-way street (and every intersecting street) in Concord. Nothing. Also, 9/202 is a longer multiplex than that, since it comes into town from the west.
