I recently had the occasion to visit Confusion Hill which is located in Northern Mendocino County on a former alignment of US Route 101. Confusion Hill opened in 1949 and has since become a notable attraction for travelers on US Route 101. Confusion Hill lies near the South Fork Eel River which was part of a massive early alignment construction project which saw the Redwood Highway replace the Rattlesnake Grade between Cummings and Dyerville. US Route 101 was likely planned to be shifted to a central segment of California State Route 271 which was ultimately never constructed. US Route 101 was shifted onto the Confusion Hill Bridges in 2009 which replaced the original slide prone grade. Somewhat odd (perhaps "Confusingly") former US Route 101 at Confusion Hill exists as unrelinquished Route 101U.

Aha, I need to add 101U to my clinched list. (Is there another 101U?)

Considering I didn't even know this 101U existed until I wrote this blog I would say it is probably highly likely. Nonetheless this would be an interesting clinch given you would need to walk out over the slide zone on foot.

Ah, I only traversed the traversable part. So 101U legislatively extends out into no-man's land.

Yes, but it is a doable one it seems at about one mile in length. I much rather save my time the next trip for the Old Slab alignment of 101.

You may have to elaborate on what that means for us non-Californians.
