Title: SPUIs with stop lines before the right turn onto the on-ramp
Post by: jakeroot on March 18, 2021, 03:26:13 PM
I was touring around Irvine, CA today when I noticed the SPUI between the Jamboree Rd Freeway and Edinger Ave (https://www.google.com/maps/@33.7043742,-117.8061359,192m/data=!3m1!1e3) has a SPUI designed so that the right turns onto the on-ramp occur after the stop line.

Almost universally, SPUIs are designed with free right turns, so this is a bit unusual.

You get signs not normally seen at SPUIs (https://goo.gl/maps/GfCHJtetJodNM5TD8) as a result, like "turning traffic yield to pedestrians" or "no right turn" blank-out signs.

In a way, the on-ramps are more like diamonds, but the interchange is clearly a SPUI.

Unusual, but I see why they did it.

Also, the roadway is lined in that area as if traffic could come off the ramp and continue straight onto this ramp.  But, the signage on the off-ramp indicates "Right Lane Must Turn Right", there's a right turn arrow on the pavement, and the traffic light uses green right arrows.

Do you count yield (https://goo.gl/maps/FqPcNbG6XoonaHjn6) signs (https://goo.gl/maps/pMNZMfGaiYp9xwC89)?  Or stoplights (https://goo.gl/maps/zUbyxGtReSrR6UiQA)?  Or "right on red after stop (https://goo.gl/maps/DP7kDPGxyUrsbWCF8)?

Shitty thread title, my bad.

I was looking for examples for the right turn onto the on-ramp was after the main stop line. Normally the stop line for a SPUI is only for left and through movements.

Yeah, it could be a continuous flow add-lane but they decided to signalize it. Odd.

As to the whole setup, it was definitely necessitated because of the drainage channels in the area. I actually think it's quite clever. But it wouldn't surprise me if this was the only example.

Ah.  That makes more sense.

Close, but no cigar:  Yield here to peds (https://goo.gl/maps/9mgjx68gWXAXR71WA)

Here's one in Arizona, and if you look further south along that corridor you'll see others: https://www.google.com/maps/@33.5675875,-112.1174337,155m/data=!3m1!1e3

P.S. south of all those SPUI, check out this diamond- maybe the widest yet narrowest TUDI I've seen: https://www.google.com/maps/@33.4950646,-112.1130415,78m/data=!3m1!1e3

this is cheating: https://www.google.com/maps/@39.7111918,-104.8257898,143m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en

speaking of weird right turns at SPUI: https://www.google.com/maps/@38.7536519,-90.7004733,290m/data=!3m1!1e3
notice the right turns off the freeway occur so far from the bridge that there is a 2 phase setup...does that make this a "three-point" diamond?

Those Arizona examples are like a diamond/SPUI hybrid. Very interesting. I really like them. Definitely still SPUIs and would 100% count for this thread. Heck, they're a textbook example.

That TUDI is insanely wide. I would love to see how it operates.

Yes that is cheating :-D

The secondary stop line (if you want to call it that) at that SPUI reminds me of this DDI in Odense, DK (https://www.google.com/maps/@55.3610525,10.3450617,224m/data=!3m1!1e3). The off-ramp left turn has a second signal separate from the crossover.
