Title: Lawrence, KS: Road Maintenance through Baker Wetlands has stirred up protesters.

In the process of maintaining the existing 31st Street through the Baker Wetlands, where the controversial South Lawrence Trafficway is proposed to run, workers removed a Beaver Dam from a culvert in the Right of Way, causing the wetlands north of 31st, on the Haskell Campus proper, to drop, and for wildlife to migrate across 31st, resulting in additional road kill, at least according to those who protested the county's decision.

The stated reason for the removal of the dam was to protect the sub-grade of the existing 31st Street.

Needless to say, I was definitely making my feelings about this little protest known. The letter was published Today (6/13)

I do know the identity of at least one of the commentators on that article (excluding myself). On the J-W forums, you can indicate that you *do* want to be identified. I have attempted to do so, but other than the fact that some of the forum members know who I am, I have yet to be officially verified.
