Title: Your state’s border crossings ranked
Post by: thspfc on April 25, 2021, 03:19:22 PM
Rank your state's border crossings by importance.
My opinion for Wisconsin's top 10:

1. I-41/94 at the IL border
2. I-39/90 at the IL border
3. I-94/US-12 at the MN border
4. I-90 at the MN border
5. US-61/151 at the IA border
6. I-535/US-53 at the MN border
7. US-41 at the MI border
8. US-12 at the IL border
9. US-14/61 at the MN border
10. US-2 at the MI border (in Ironwood)

5.  I-40 at the Arizona State Line
6.  I-8 at the Arizona State Line
7.  US 50 at the Nevada State Line
8.  US 395 for passenger cars south of Reno but probably now CA 167 for freight.

15.  CA 28 from the Nevada State Line

No love for US 24 at OH on the Toledo/Fort Wayne route?
IN 10/IL 114 gets some traffic as an alternate to 80/94 for I-65 traffic, to jump over to I-57

I'm going to try (just interstates):

I-84 MA/CT
I-95 MA/NH
I-93 MA/NH
I-95 MA/RI
I-90 MA/NY
I-91 MA/CT
I-195 MA/RI
I-295 MA/RI
I-395 MA/CT
I-91 MA/VT

What about least important?  Here are some non-OHV examples for California:

-  Nipton Road on the Nevada State Line
-  Needles Highway on the Nevada State Line
-  K Street in the Arizona State Line
-  CA 299 on the Nevada State Line
-  Stateline Road on the Nevada State Line
-  Daylight Pass Road on the Nevada State Line
-  CA 266 on the Nevada State Line
-  Anges Wilson Road on the Arizona State Line
-  River Road (this is fun finding this one) on the Arizona State Line
-  CA 182 on the Nevada State Line
-  Red Rock Road on the Nevada State Line
-  Surprise Valley Road on the Nevada State Line
-  Barrel Springs Road on the Nevada State Line
-  County Road 1 on the Oregon State Line
-  All the roads leading to Goose Lake State Park in Oregon
-  Anything entering Oregon from CA 161
-  Hilt Road over the Oregon State Line
-  Grayback Road to the Oregon State Line

I guess now that I think about it US 6, CA 139 and US 97 would all be a step down from the original 15 in terms of importance I posted above.

Ohio (2019 AADT for each crossing in parenthesis)

Interstate crossings and 4 lane divided US routes included. Most others are below 10k AADT.

I-71/I-75 KY (153k)
I-471 KY (107k)
I-275 KY (81k)
I-75 MI (58k)
US 23 MI (48k)
I-74 IN (45k)
I-470 WV (40k)
I-70 IN (36k)
US 22 WV (32,035)
I-275 IN (31,849)
I-80 PA (30k)
I-76 PA (26k)
I-90 PA (23,894)
I-70 WV (23,790)
US 35 WV (20,899)
I-80/90 IN (20,779)
I-77 WV (20,757)
US 52 WV (20,207)
US 30 IN (15,306)
US 24 IN (14,822)
US 50 WV (13k)

I'm actually surprised that I-80/90 at IN border ended up this low on the list, barely above I-77 WV as the second least used of the 14 interstate crossings. Thought it would be at least above the I-70 IN crossing.

Lots of trucks jump off at OH 15 and OH 49 and take US 20 into Indiana. But I don't think its enough to make a huge difference.

Also suspect US 24 takes some to the traffic from 80/90.

I'm not going to make a list of border crossings for MO right now, but the Poplar Street Bridge (I-55, I-64/US 40, and formerly I-70) is at the top of the list for the state.

Interesting that our AADT numbers are off by a couple thousand for both routes. We both used 2019 data, and I'm assuming you also used the AADT point between the first/last exit in the state and the border.

Nevada:

1.  I-15 from California (47,000)
2.  US 50 from California  (27,400) (this includes a lot of pedestrian traffic too though)
3.  I-80 from California (36,500)
4.  I-15 from Arizona (24,000) (welcome, Utah)
5.  I-11/US 93 from Arizona (20,500)
6.  CA 28/NV 28 from California (12,900)
7.  AZ 95/NV 163 from Arizona (30,500) (this number is fluffy because of a lot of local traffic in Laughlin/Bullhead City)
8.  I-80 from Utah (5,850)
9.  US 93 from Idaho (4,150)
10.  US 95 from Oregon (Idaho) (2,750)

Edit: Being a Nevadan I tend to think of the "importance of border crossings" as "how much money visitors bring across the border at each crossing", so I ranked them intuitively that way.  I did go back and add representative 2019 AADT, and for the most part there's a correspondence.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that AADT is counted with the total number of vehicles that crossed over the AADT sensor (or whatever it uses) in a year, then divide that number by 365, hence the word "average". If that's the case, theoretically, there shouldn't be that big of a difference between AADT counts of that same road in two states.

Going to use AADT numbers for this since I feel like all our interstate border crossings are about the same importance level. This is every state-maintained road that crosses the Utah state line:

I-15 at AZ line: 25000
I-80 at WY line: 16000
I-15 at ID line: 12000
I-84 at ID line: 9800
US 91 at ID line: 8500
I-70 at CO line: 7700
I-80 at NV line: 7600
US 89A at AZ line: 5200
US 89 at AZ line: 4800
SR 59 at AZ line: 4400
US 40 at CO line: 3200
US 491 at CO line: 3100
US 89 at ID line: 2800
SR 58/BL-80 at NV line: 2600
US 163 at AZ line: 2500
SR 162 at CO line: 2000
US 191 at AZ line: 1900
SR 43 at WY line (east): 1700
SR 200 at ID line: 1400
SR 23 at ID line: 1300
SR 16 at WY line: 1300
US 191 at WY line: 1200
SR 43 at WY line (west): 1200
SR 30 at WY line: 780
SR 56 at NV line: 590
US 6/50 at NV line: 420
SR 46 at CO line: 420
SR 30 at NV line: 400
SR 150 at WY line: 350
SR 42 at ID line: 260
SR 21 at NV line: 170
FA 1364 at CO line (not state maintained in Utah, but connects to SH 318): 70

I was initially surprised to see US 91 higher than two Interstate crossings, but it does make sense as Logan is the closest good-size city for Franklin County and a good chunk of southeast Idaho.

EDIT: bolding the ones I've crossed myself because why not.

It depends if it's a short count or an ongoing count. This could vary by state. Here in New York, our data is mostly short counts (data is usually collected over a period of 3-5 weekdays, with equipment set up at the beginning of the count and taken down at the end) except for a few select locations which gather data year-round.

Obviously, there's going to be some variation with short counts, say if Ohio collected their data in April and Michigan collected theirs in June. But even if one state uses ongoing counts, you'd need both to do so for the numbers to be exact, and even then, the exact time frame could skew it a bit. I'm honestly surprised the numbers are as close as they are. I wouldn't have batted an eyelash at an even larger difference.

4. I-39/I-90 with Wisconsin

16b. CO13 Wyoming  (1,400)
18a. US84 New Mexico  (1,200)
18b. US34 Nebraska  (1,200)
18c. CO113 Nebraska  (1,200)
21. CO127 Wyoming  (950)

38. CO116 Kansas  (120)
39. CO318 Utah  (110)
40. CO389 New Mexico  (100)

Bonus - Not a State Maintained Highway in Colorado, But State Maintained in Bordering State:
WYO430/Moffat CR10N (280)
WYO10/Larimer CR103 (233)
WYO214/Weld CR79 (199)
K-15/Baca CR-M (115)

The only ones I think I'd re-order would be having I-70 Kansas and I-76 Nebraska higher than I-25 New Mexico.  I think, by importance, the truck traffic on those routes brings it a little higher than the NM traffic which has some local Raton-Trinidad stuff going on.

I was a little bit surprised to see US550 New Mexico higher than US287 Wyoming as well as having CO140 the highest of the state routes.

More or less a lot of Googling "XXX State AADT" and looking for Excel files, .pdfs, or downloadable searches on their GIS.  If you have a particular state, I can direct you towards the data that I've used.

I can make an attempt at Oregon, without the data in front of me.

I-5 at Washington
I-205 at Washington (these are probably tied)

I-5 at California
I-84 at Idaho

US-101 at Washington
US-97 at Washington
US-97 at California
US-101 at California
US-95 at Idaho
US-199 at California
US-395 at California
US-95 at Nevada
WA-433 at Washington (connects the Kelso-Longview area to Oregon....I *think* it's still WA-433 entering Oregon)
US-730 at Washington
ORr-35 at Washington
Bridge of the Gods connecting OR-WA
OR-11 at Washington
OR-140 at Nevada
OR-3 at Washington

Think that covers most of them, if not all.

Come on, you're not a noob.  :D
Every state has their own site. I'd usually start by googling "[state name] traffic data" and their site should come up within the first few results.

I don't know that I've ever downloaded anything, save for maybe a few .pdf's of some NY state routes in my area. You can usually find whatever you're looking for on the state's traffic data viewer or equivalent without downloading anything.

When you're trying to find the extremes in the state's AADTs (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=28578.0), it's way easier to get an Excel file to sort and filter.  If you're looking for the AADT of a certain segment, sure, the maps work just fine.

I'm not sure about using volume data to rank the crossings. It makes sense to a certain extent, but then you have cases like NY 303 at the NJ line being almost twice as busy as I-86 at the PA line. Yet no one would argue that NY 303 is the more important crossing.

The Canadian crossings don't have accurate AADT numbers, but here are their rankings in importance:
1. Ambassador Bridge
2. Blue Water Bridge
3. Detroit-Windsor Tunnel
4. International Bridge (Sault Ste. Marie)

The Howe Bridge will jump to #1 when it opens.
And likely, the Ambassador will drop to #3.

I think it's a good basis from which to start thinking about importance.  As I posted for mine in Colorado, there are some I'd move around (interstates specifically) for importance, but I guess what makes it important if it's not the amount of people that use it?  I can see bridges without any others around being one obvious "exception", i.e. I-155 MO/TN.

Yep.

Loosely BC37A Stewart-Cassiar Highway

And technically the Top of the World Highway is not numbered on the AK side.  AK-5 goes up to Eagle.

The numbers I got for Ohio are mostly reasonable, so I went with it. Most used crossings at major metro areas like Cincinnati and Toledo. Most interstates are above 4 lane US routes. The only one that's puzzling to me is US 22's 32k AADT at the WV border. US 22 is a freeway at that point, but Steubenville isn't that large of a city, and the 4 lane section dead ends at Cadiz on the Ohio side, though continues all the way as a 4 lane to I-376 on the east. The AADT number would've made more sense to me if it connected to I-70 at Cambridge as a freeway, as that would make a neat Columbus-Pittsburgh freeway corridor, except it doesn't.

2019 AADT of US 22 from Cambridge to WV Border
East of I-77 junction - 5.8k
Concurrency with OH 800 - 2.8k
West of US 250 junctions - 3k
Concurrency with US 250 - 8.5k
East of US 250 junctions - 8.7k
Concurrency with OH 151 - 10.5k
East of OH 151 eastern junction - 11.4k
East of OH 152 junction - 10k
West of OH 43 junction - 10.2k
East of OH 43 junction - 15.8k
West of John Scott Hwy junction - 18k
Between John Scott Hwy and OH 7 - 29k
Concurrency with OH 7 - 33.8k
WV Border - 32k

Actually, a lot of the local roads numbers near Steubenville seem high too, even with 2020 numbers. Especially the 20k on OH 43. Most of the busiest arterials in Cincinnati and Columbus don't even reach that high.

I think I'll take a stab at neighboring Washington.  Again, no data in front of me, but I'll stick to the larger thoroughfares.

I think the biggest would be I-5 at the Canadian border, as it's the artery of the west coast, and connects two huge metro areas, Seattle and Vancouver, BC.

Next up, I'm not sure of.  Would it be I-90 from Idaho because of the length of I-90 and cities served along the way?  Or would it be I-5 entering from Oregon?  I'll tie these at 2nd.

- I-82 entering from Oregon
- US-97, both ends at the BC and Oregon lines
- US-12 at Idaho
-US-101 at Oregon
-US-2 at Idaho
-US-395 at the BC line

Here's some wild cards.  Would we include ferry routes?  If so, the one from Victoria-Port Angeles, and from Vancouver to Seattle would certainly land high on the list.

Again, not a all inclusive list, I just tried to get the big ones.

Loosely BC37A Stewart-Cassiar Highway
You could make an argument for that being the most important crossing to Alaska, since it's the only access to Hyder, and Hyder residents share a lot of community resources with Stewart, BC (including school).

I mean, there's only 87 people in Hyder.  I'm pretty sure that the amount of goods that come on the Alaska Highway serve a few more people in the remaining part of the state.

Chris

Absolutely, and I would probably rate the Alaska highway higher, but it does show how subjective the notion of "importance" would be. Shut down the Hyder crossing and the town is cut off. Shut down the Alaska Highway crossing and goods can take a longer, more expensive route.

Also of note for Alaska, do you count the ferry system connections to Bellingham and/or Prince Rupert?

If we start doing that, then we have to do the same for Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Maine too.

Having lived down there for 11 years, that really doesn't sound right. I-65 seemingly always has more traffic than I-64.
