Title: Have you ever been on television?
Post by: hbelkins on July 22, 2021, 02:34:58 PM
Inspired by kphoger's lament that he had no place to post his family's television appearance after one of the c0v1d threads got locked. I thought there was an existing thread for "roadgeeks on TV" but have had no luck finding it.

Post narratives about any television appearances you may have had here, along with links.

I'll refrain from posting every link every time I get interviewed for my job. Ken Jennings (if he's still here) is also excused from posting Jeopardy appearance links.  :-D

I was briefly interviewed by a station in Lansing when our neighborhood flooded in 1998.  Why they would care what a 15 year old had to say I have no idea.

More interestingly my Dad did a spot for Prodigy Online and Regis & Kathie Lee.  He demonstrated how you could order merchandise from Sears and it would be delivered to you.  They even had a Sears van pull onto the set at some point.

On channel 12 (WCTI) I'm sure. I graduated from a program called ProjectSEARCH and I don't know if the video is on youtube but i can find it.

I have no links, but as a kid I was on some show about animals and science and got to go to the zoo and read some scripted lines.  More recently, the hotel in which the restaurant I ran was opening our rooftop pool bar, so I got to go on the morning show of Fox 31 and make a cocktail for the anchors.

I once had the privilege of sitting directly behind home plate at a Cubs game. So, I was on TV, even if I wasn't the focus of the camera.

I was interviewed by WGN-9 at Taste of Chicago I think in 2001.

I was interviewed by WSBT-22 in South Bend in 2011 to commemorate our family's 50th consecutive year of bowling on Thanksgiving.

As a student manager, I can be spotted on the sideline of a few Notre Dame football games from the 1993 season, most notably the Cotton Bowl.

I competed on It's Academic when I was in high school and briefly appeared on the show again two years later when I was in the audience to watch my brother compete on the same show.

I used to show up on UVA basketball broadcasts all the time due to being down front with my face painted orange and blue and an orange thing tucked under my hat to make my hair appear orange.

More recently, I was interviewed by a local TV sports reporter after my wife and I got our picture taken with the Stanley Cup after the Capitals won it in 2018. A brief clip of that interview was used on that night's sports report.

I was interviewed by KWTV when I attended the ODOT open house prior to the demolition of the old I-40 Crosstown in downtown Oklahoma City. I think I said something silly about how even though the road was closed I felt compelled to stay out of the travel lanes.

One of my supervisors saw it and the next day at work he approached me to say, "I saw you on TV. You were wearing a hat." Then he walked off. Thus was the only review of my 30 seconds of fame.

In my experience digging up old news coverage for use as Wikipedia cites, I've found that TV news sites are about the worst about archiving old content. If you really want a long-term record of you talking to a reporter, you need to get in the newspaper.

Yes ... "catching" a Home Run ball at a Reds game (2012 against the Marlins) out in right field, after the ball initially bounced off a concession girl's butt.

I was interviewed for VCU InSight, a campus news program that aired on PBS, about being a Wikipedia admin and a VCU student back in 2007 when Jimmy Wales spoke on campus. Unfortunately the people running the production completely butchered the interview footage, took things I said out of context (oh yes, you should definitely use Wikipedia as a primary source, even though that's not what I said at all). They even combined the "admin" and "student" things to create the strange title of "student administrator". VCU InSight disappeared last fall and I'm honestly glad it's gone.

Other than that I've had a few photos featured on the news but that's it.

EDIT: Duh, as a sports photographer I've made a ton of cameo appearances on broadcasts of VCU basketball games, including a rather infamous one where I'm wandering around aimlessly in the background while a player was being interviewed.

More recently, a co-worker saw me on TV waiting in line to vote in 2008.

I've worked on TV a handful of times as a sports broadcaster, just small-time local access channels.

I was on TV as a peon at a Dodgers/Brewers game in 2018. The Dodgers were winning a blowout game which caused the home plate seats to clear out, and unlike other ballparks those seats at Miller Park aren't separated by a secured tunnel under the concourse. I spent the bottom of the 9th on the Dodgers' broadcast and you can find me in the highlight of the final out of the game.

The weird sidebar to that was that I had bought a fairly good ticket for my original seat, and I found I liked that seat better than the plate seats. The plate seats felt a lot further from the action than my original seat a number of rows above the first base dugout.

Heh, by a crazy coincidence, this thread was made on the three-year anniversary of that game.

https://youtu.be/-3bMk0Cpt4k?t=142 I'm on the far left in the blue shirt, if you can stomach looking at my gross far self at the 2:20 mark.

Speaking of the Brewers, that's how I made the local news years ago.  Waiting in line on day one of single game ticket sells one February.  What they called the "Arctic Tailgate" back then.  I think it was channel 4.

I paid for a large chunk of my college education by scholarship won on an academic trivia competition on a local TV station in Memphis (2 seasons).

More recently, I appeared on all four local newscasts a few years ago, and was interviewed on one, as a result of helping out with getting a bunch of middle schoolers to chat with an astronaut on the ISS via ham radio.

Yes and no. TV stations' links die quite often (unless they're lucky enough to be archived on the Wayback Machine or cached by Google) but I've found that newspaper links expire with great frequency, as well. Sometimes a Facebook memory will pop up from a few years ago where I've shared a newspaper story, and that link will turn out to be U.S. Federal Route 404.

Prior to my current job, where being interviewed by TV reports is an occupational hazard, I appeared in a couple of "Kentucky Life" shows  done by a Lexington television station, where they would highlight counties in their coverage area. I didn't have a speaking role in the ones done for Lee and Breathitt counties, but there's plenty of footage of me doing stuff at the paper office (layout/pasteup of pages, talking on the phone, typing up a story). Then, when I became editor of a paper, I actually did get interviewed about the newspaper for a similar type show. Occasionally someone will post a YouTube link on Facebook and I'll see it.

I've been told I was pretty prominent at the 2003 victory celebration for Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher. I attended the event in Lexington and ended up being right on the front row. I got an email from a former boss saying she'd seen me in the coverage and that I looked pretty happy.

I've found that while the links themselves expire frequently on newspaper websites, it's also more frequent than on TV news sites that the content merely got shuffled around and can be found again by searching. Also, papers are more likely to get picked up by library systems and added to library databases, so even if there's not a copy on the newspaper's own site, you can get it through the library.

No links to my knowledge, and I appeared several times on television in Cleveland.

In 1995 as a senior in high school, I along with the other area valedictorians and salutatorians appeared on the Morning Exchange. I also appeared that year on "Academic Challenge", a high school quiz team game show. Both were on WEWS channel 5 if I recall correctly.

In 2004 as a member of the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, we sang the national anthem for the Cleveland Indians' opening day. Our performance was televised on the local broadcast.

In the mid-1970's my high school marching band performed at a few Miami Dolphins home games.  Although much of the footage was shots of the entire band, there were some closeups where I was recognizable.  Back then halftime shows were actually televised; nowadays they cut back to the studio for "expert analysis".

Some of the footage was actually used for several years by NBC to show over the opening credits of their Sunday afternoon football telecast.

The clip of at least one of the shows exists on YouTube.  Curt Gowdy even mispronounces our high school's name.

I was interviewed by KRON 4 in San Francisco a few years ago when I was there for the Chinese New Year parade.

I was interviewed by KXTV 10 here in Sacramento when I took my son out to the local dam to see a bunch of the spillway gates opened for the first time in several years.  I don't think my interview ever made it to air.

I've never been certain but I might have made it onto local TV news a few other times when I have performed the national anthem at the annual Caltrans Worker Memorial.

It's not TV but if you go onto Caltrans' official YouTube page you will find a video where I was interviewed talking about our efforts to give contractors more time on the highways to complete roadwork.

I've made two appearances on TV in the last year (please note that in European broadcasting call signs aren't used, here in Spain they would have started with EA), courtesy of having an autism spectrum disorder and good speech abilities :sombrero:. Both were in public television, the first was in regional network Aragon TV as I had reviewed a book about a girl with an ASD (the book itself has superimposed images, and by using colored glasses one can see one picture or the other), the second was in the national network TVE for the Asperger's Awareness Day (A misnomer for me, as I don't use the term "Asperger's" anymore). In the latter they mislabelled my first family name, I pointed that out and they corrected it.

I once asked a question to Governor Jay Inslee during a transportation forum that was aired on KING-TV.

And I've testified in a few state legislature committee hearings, which are always televised on TVW.

A few cameo appearances at transit events with my camera in hand as well.

Maybe someday I'll be interviewed about something!

When I was a kid in the Twin Cities, I remember being on some talk show one of the stations did. They interviewed my mother for something.

It wasn't exactly me, but when I did my courier job in Omaha, I got into an accident just as morning rush hour began, so they were showing the company van I had an accident with on all the channels.

Yes, but doing so would reveal who I am. I've been on twice in two separate events, although the news agency in the second one tried to connect it to the first despite being not that much related (the first made national news; the second local only).

However, I'm not sure if I was actually on screen the first time, as I was young. My mother definitely was, though.

Back when I was 14, a major presidential candidate visited Cincinnati. Me and my brother went over to see him at his campaign stop at a local market. When the local news covered it, you could barely see my head in the background.

I taped it off TV, but later my mom recorded over it with some dumb movie.

A couple times.  First was in a studio audience for a Hartford Whalers postgame show.  I correctly answered the trivia question and won a Sony Watchman.  The 2nd was during the 1990 Greater Hartford Open (now the Travelers Championship).  As the winner walked up the 18th fairway and the CBS camera zoomed in on the gallery, I was the first person shown standing up.

I'm sure the back of my head was caught on camera numerous times, as our Whalers season tickets were 3rd row right next to the bench.

2nd time was around 2004 or 2005 as apartment complex I lived in had a fire.

3rd time in January of 2011 as was interviewed at sports bar during Packers superbowl playoff run

Not yet, as far as I know.

My school district recently made the decision to mandate masks for this upcoming school year (my senior year). Naturally, the local news stations would use footage of kids at school while reporting this. However, I quickly noticed a flaw in the local NBC station's usage of footage: It is over seven years old. The footage contains students that are now seniors, but shown as fifth graders. How do I know this? I was quick to spot an old friend, and my brother adjacent to him in one of the school's fifth grade classrooms. The school pictured, my Alma mater, had two classes per grade. I was in the other class, which was not filmed. The station initially used the footage for a story that was about how the school district gave every student at the school a Chromebook laptop for school use for the first time, so its possible that those kids may have been on the local station twice. I was, however, featured in the school district's video explaining said program.

When I was 9 or 10, my primary school head was interviewed about something, and me and some friends came out of the changing rooms talking. You could hear us in the background of the interview when it aired the next morning.

And when I was 18, my back was in some b-roll footage of an event that they did a piece on.

Had a classmate who pretended to be sick one day to go watch Wimbledon on Centre Court. He didn't quite have that quality of seat, but he was clearly visible throughout a lot of the coverage - including the highlights. Teacher decided to poke fun at him about it*, rather than have a go at him - he was 17 and not a trouble maker and it was after that years exams with him not continuing the subject so the stakes were low.

*"While being ill is horrible, at least the tennis was on so you could had something good to watch on TV." "Glad to hear your Tennisitis has cleared up", etc.

I've made two appearances on TV in the last year (please note that in European broadcasting call signs aren't used, here in Spain they would have started with EA),

Actually, the first couple of letters in the call sign for Spain could be somewhere in the ranges EA-EH or AM-AO, although domestic regulations could restrict that further.

(A side-effect of being into ham radio: you tend to be familiar with ITU prefix ranges....)

Good to know. However the only known broadcasting call signs in Spain started with EA (save for Radio Nacional de España which used an otherwise Russian call sign in order to use their initials: RNE). For example Radio Huesca, part of the SER network, used to be EAJ-22.

Chicago has a thriving TV and film industry, and I've worked as an extra a number of times.  Mostly it's been blink-and-you-miss-it appearances, or you can just see the back of my head, although I was on an episode of Chicago Fire where I had enough screen time that my parents saw me when it aired live.

I don't have much time to do it these days, but I had more free time in the spring, when I played a "Heavily Armed Orthodox Jew" for a series premiering on Starz in January.

I was featured on the A&E show The Employables.  It was fun and I got to visit New York City.  With me on the Autism Spectrum, it was great they helped me finding a job.  Wish there would be another season as many with disabilities like Autism are unemployed still.

Here's the link to the episode. https://play.aetv.com/shows/the-employables/season-1/episode-3

I've been on TV several times. WLUC-TV hosts their annual Can-a-thon, and in years past, you could make your donations at the station during a live broadcast as various groups brought in their collections to be tallied for the grand total.

I also competed on WNMU-TV's High School Bowl all four years of high school.

Now, how many of you have been interviewed on the radio or made the front page of the newspaper?

Check for both. Although I made to the front page of a newspaper through a photo of a Saint Sylvester run.

My dad was on a flight with almost 150 other deployed Air Force personnel coming home. I was in the shot. Not super exiting.

Been interviewed for a column (never on the front page) and used to do interviews of other people when I was in radio.

I've been interviewed by the sadly now-defunct Clark Fork Wagon Wheel newspaper where I think I mentioned then-Senator Conrad Burns and his bribery situation. I think it was 2005. I've also been featured in their newspaper after having completed my high school's yearbook as the ONE and ONLY freshman. We had 18 in the first half of the production. 14 left, leaving me with two seniors and a junior to finish the rest of the book.

My first foray to radio was when Eagle 93.3 FM personalities Scott Richards (now a DJ at 107.1 The Ranch FM) and Paula Parks ran a drawing out at Frenchies Convenience Store in Frenchtown of which the winner of the raffle was presented a Dr. Pepper go-kart. I ended up with a ballcap and t-shirt, which, sadly, I do not possess anymore. Radio personalities Kim Murray and Tom Hershey of 94.9 KISS FM in Missoula had a birthdays and anniversaries segment of which I was mentioned on their morning show. Oh, and I think I called in to another radio show on Z100 (KZOQ-FM) talking about a wreck on Mullan Road nearby the pulp mill. Chris Wolfe and Brian Lee host the very program that's still going strong after, what, 10 or so years.

Then, circa 2011 or 12, somewhere in that zone, I appeared on MCAT (Missoula Community Access Television) while attending an event called the Spring Hullaballoo at the University of Montana ballroom benefitting children with autism and altruism. I have my DVD copy of my appearance on MCAT which the person gladly produced for the club I joined called the Neuro Networking Club.

While I personally wasn't on there, I had a question sent in to a local TV station read on the air when I was a child.
Same here, I was 4 years old and one of the Autism segments that my parents wanted me so bad to be on aired on my local TV Station.

I appeared on the same program during my senior year of high school (back in 1982).  Did not win our match.

When Mike Huckabee announced he was running for president a few years ago, I happened to be visiting in Mena and watched his press conference on the KARK-4 station. After the conference, the newscaster said that they would be reading the best of comments on Twitter later in the newscast. I posted "Mike Huckabee drinking game: Take a drink every time Mike lies. You'll be drunk in no time." They didn't read it, but it did briefly appear on the screen in the background. I wish I could find the video.

I actually saw H.B. Elkins on TV once. I recognized him from a photo he had on his website. His TV appearance was a brief shot where he was holding a camera as Gov. Ernie Fletcher was walking by.

There are a few videos out there on YouTube dating back to the 1980s when some of the Lexington TV stations were doing feature shows about the communities in their coverage area. I can be seen in some of the coverage for Lee, Breathitt, and Estill counties, and actually had a speaking role in the Estill County program.

I photographed several events where Gov. Fletcher was present. I attended his election night celebration in November 2003 and actually was able to stand in the front row. A former boss told me she had seen me on TV briefly during the crowd shot.

I had an interview with WYMT-TV on Friday, done remotely via FaceTime, that aired on their Friday afternoon newscast. It was a story about the KY 15 project in Perry County.

One of the reasons I absolutely hate being on TV is because you lose anonymity to the general public. I can't imagine what it would be like if you're a celebrity or public figure, trying to live your normal life. It's one reason I don't like putting my picture on social media profiles (and it's an attitude that has developed over the years and is vastly changed from when I had the ISP-provided Web site that Tim referenced above.)

I'm used to seeing friends, people I actually know in real life, coming up to me in a store or other public place and telling me they saw me on television if I'm interviewed. But when strangers do it, it's a bit off-putting.

As part of my job, I serve on the Kentucky Weather Preparedness Committee-East. It's a group coordinated by the NWS Jackson office and includes people from professions that deal with the weather: the media, utility companies, school districts, emergency relief organizations, and transportation maintenance agencies. At one meeting I attended, one of the WYMT OCMs was there. I'd interacted with him a lot via email, phone, etc., but had never met him. I went to introduce myself to him and he said, "I knew who you were the minute you got out of the car because you've been on TV so much."

Another time, I was attending a training class and someone I'd never met struck up a conversation with me, saying he'd seen me on the news a lot and he recognized me. Since I hate strangers making small talk, I wasn't pleased. (I'm the guy who would rather read while waiting in the doctor's office than have to talk with the other people who are waiting.)

Unfortunately for someone like me who works in the industry, trying to be anonymous is a bad thing for your career prospects. I *need* people to know who I am if I want to move up. Sometimes it unnerves me a bit because I value that sort of privacy, but it is what it is. I've done very little on-camera work, so it's more likely if someone were to recognize me it would be by voice. I'm not big enough yet for that though.

I'm surprised that anyone even remembers the name and face of someone who's just been interviewed on TV. I barely remember anyone like that by the time the program ends, much less weeks later and out-of-context like at a grocery store or doctor's office. Hell, I probably wouldn't even recognize the anchors.

I've not been on television, but I had a weekly radio show in my hometown in the late 2010s where I aired rock music mixed with memes... for instance, SiIvaGunner (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SiIvaGunner) had quite a few appearances on the show. I've also aired some more obscure metal stuff, such as one song which had 150 views on YouTube when I found it. The show had stopped when I moved to Québec City, but I always record a few shows whenever I'm in vacation there.

Our 4th grade class put on a play, and we later had it recorded at our county's local educational TV cable network (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/WBEC-TV) studio. All the schools in the district had access to it, but I couldn't tell you what kind of ratings it received... :P But that was a neat field trip.

I had no speaking parts, just sang a few lines with about 15-20 other classmates.

I'd prefer to be a name without a face.

I attended a class a couple of years ago where the trainers were making a big deal out of credibility and people knowing and trusting who was communicating to them in times of crisis. I tried to make the point that who's doing the speaking (or the writing) should matter more than what the person looks like, but the instructor just wasn't able to understand. He seemed to think that you don't get credibility until people can personalize the information. The class was about communicating to different audiences and people with different perspectives. If a news organization gets an email from me, and they know my name, they should be able to know that they're getting accurate information just by seeing where it's coming from. They shouldn't have to be able to see that I'm an aging white male with short graying hair and a spare tire around my waist. My physical appearance should not make a difference in how the message is perceived.

Figure unless you have a "Karen" moment, come into a lot of money, or at a spot in todays politically charged climate can use for a narrative then for the most part just being on tv for an interview is nothing.

Of course then you have the Steve Bartman or Katherine Webb types that being on TV at a certain time or place for better or worse changed their lives.
