Title: Longest Time You Stayed on One Highway on a Given Trip
Post by: ethanhopkin14 on August 10, 2021, 02:26:43 PM
On a given trip, what was the longest distance you traveled on one highway.  If you went out and clinched a whole highway in one trip, let's hear about it.

Mine might be I-95 from Kittery ME to Florence, SC
I-10 from Columbus, TX to Jacksonville, FL
I-10 from Junction, TX to Santa Monica, CA

All three, talk about a difference in scenery from one end to the next.

The entirety of I-65 from start to finish.  I purposely made detours off I-10 to spice up some cross country moves.

On a drive from Chicago to California, I was on I-40 W for half of Oklahoma, and all of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and the whole of the route in California. That makes for a total of 1,209 miles, or 47.2% of its 2,559, pretty much all at once.

I have something similar for the western bit of I-70, but I got off the highway here and there for twenty miles and fifty miles and so on for various activities, so it doesn't quite count.

The full length of I-65 is definitely one heck of a detour off of I-10.  :-D

748 miles on I-35 (including I-35W through Fort Worth)
Beginning:  Texas, Exit #24
Ending:  Kansas, Exit #42

If that doesn't count because of using 35W, then my next best is probably 661 miles on I-80, from I-76 to I-88.

So jealous.  I wish a road trip would require me to clinch an entire highway at one time.  Where I live makes some of that hard, but it can happen.  I plan to some day soon drive all of I-35 to Duluth, but living in Austin sill cuts out the first 230 miles for it to be all on one trip.  Maybe if I drive from Chicago back home, and take I-55 all the way to I-10, I could do it.  Or I-25 If I am heading to northern Wyoming (alas, I only have from Las Cruces to Cheyenne, and that was one trip).

I-95 from just south of Lumberton, North Carolina to Joppa, Maryland: 420 miles.

Regarding I-10 I did clinch, but it was never in a single trip like I-65.  I've done enough of I-10 that it kind of puts me in a trance of boredom, especially west of El Paso.

Different stages in life.  I-65 was from Chicago to Destin, FL to visit family.  I-10 usually involved my multiple moves between Florida and the west coast.

I-75, Detroit to Atlanta and back.  Several times.

When I was younger, my family went from Grand Rapids to Florida, but that involved more than 1 route - longest bits would have been parts of I-65, I-24 and I-75.

Obviously allowing for getting off at exits to get gas/eat/sleep:

1215 miles: I-40 from Barstow, CA to Oklahoma City, OK
1067 miles: I-70 from Indianapolis, IN to Denver, CO
1034 miles: I-80 from Cheyenne, WY to South Bend, IN
884 miles: I-90 from Rapid City, SD to Schaumburg, IL
741 miles: I-94 from Freeport, MN to the western end
620 miles: I-65 from Clarksville, IN to Mobile, AL

My longest non-interstate are:

270 miles: US 41 from Saint John, IN to Henderson, KY
268 miles: US 30 from Bourbon, IN to Canton, OH

I-64 westbound from where it joins I-81 in Virginia to its western end near St. Louis in 2017; Google Maps says that was 756 miles. We did exit the highway several times for tourism, overnight stops, and once to fill the gas tank, but I got back on the highway either at the same interchange or via backtracking through an earlier (leaving Louisville after visiting Churchill Downs–we had gone through the streets to get there but used I-65 to leave).

Edited to add: Any long runs we do along the I-95 corridor invariably involve leaving I-95 somewhere–for example, on our most recent trip back from Broward County, we got on I-95 at FL-869 and took it all the way to Exit 161 in Virginia (US-1 just north of Woodbridge), but I used FL-9B and I-295 around Jacksonville and I-295 around Richmond and Petersburg, so it wasn't an uninterrupted run up I-95. It would have been 996 miles if we hadn't taken those two alternates, but I prefer both of those routes to the thru I-95 routing.

I-75 from OH 126 to Florida's Turnpike, about 850 miles.

Compared to other people's scenery contrasts over 800 miles, mine went from trees to more trees.

Some longer ones I can think of...

I-40 from Barstow to I-840 west of Nashville, about 1900 miles
I-94 from Madison WI to Glendive MT, about 880 miles
I-20 from I-10 to Cuba AL, about 980 miles
I-80 from I-74 to Laramie WY, about 850 miles
I-10 from I-8 to US 377, about 810 miles
I-80 from I-880 Iowa to I-76 near Youngstown, about 810 miles
US 50 from St Louis area to Clarksburg WV, about 600 miles
I-64 from I-70 to Charlottesville VA, about 750 miles

I-64 from I-464 in Chesapeake, VA to I-70 in Wentzville, MO.

Did the entire interstate in a single trip, with the exception of the "eastern"  most segment between I-664 and I-464.

I'm about 1750 too.  Breezewood, PA to Glenwood Springs, CO on I-70..  Bonus points for only stopping for gas and sleeping in shifts. (Yes we skipped taking I-670 in KC too, so we stayed on I-70)

I-90 from Bellevue to Sioux Falls, 1460ish
I -70 from Lawrence, KS to Cove Fort 1070ish
I-70 from Baltimore to Lawrence 1100 ish

Allowing for getting off for gas/food/lodging ...  But otherwise on one continuous trip:

The entire length of I-85 (Montgomery AL to Petersburg VA) in one trip.  677 miles

Honorable mentions:

I-95 (Ruther Glen VA to Jacksonville FL), 617 miles.
I-81 (Winchester VA to its end at I-40), 391 miles.

By the way, getting off for gas, lodging, food or even staying on one place (plus excursions) don't count against this. My example of I-95 from Kittery, ME to Florence, SC involved my brother and I driving from Kittery to New York, then us spending a week in New York, then driving south to Florence

I once deliberately took US-36 the entire way from Urbana, OH to Estes Park, CO.

That route, FWIW, actually is pretty close to the most efficient route between those 2 cities.

Wow, that's just over 960 miles.  Not quite as long, but one of my work trips to Western Illinois was on I-64 from I-195 Richmond to the I-57/I-64 split just north of Mt. Vernon, Illinois (just over 840 miles).  As a technicality, I did stop at my parents home about 2 miles from what's now the Teays Valley exit (Exit 39).  Today, I wouldn't use the asterisk because the house I grew up in is right off the US-35 Scott Depot exit (Exit 40).  Every other time I did this trip, I took different routes.

My longest is probably I-95 from Benson, NC to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, just this past summer - 751 miles. Clinched every mile of it except for three in Florida, where we got off to go to the Kennedy Space Center and got back on the next exit. In my mental "clinching I-95" game, the bottom 27 miles should be easy enough (if I'm ever renting a car in South Florida), but those three miles in central Florida will be a pain in the ass.

I-15: I-90 near Butte, MT to CA-91 at Corona, CA: ~1075 miles (bonus for doing it in a single drive (two stops for gas/food))
I-5: I-710 near Los Angeles, CA to I-405 at Portland, OR: ~965 miles (two days) (done this trip three times)
I-80: I-880 at Oakland, CA to I-15 at Salt Lake City, UT: ~730 miles (two days) (done this trip twice)

I-40, I-840 west of Nashville to US 287 in Amarillo: ~900 miles
I-80, I-15 in Salt Lake City to Fremont St in San Francisco: ~735 miles
I-70, I-25 in Denver to US 71 in Kansas City: ~600 miles
I-84, I-82 in Hermiston to I-15 in Ogden: ~550 miles

1.  I-70 from Baltimore, Maryland to the western terminus at I-15 in Millard County, Utah, about 2,150 miles (with appropriate stops).

2. I-95 and Florida's Turnpike from Miami Beach, Florida to Silver Spring, Maryland, about 1,075 miles.

Fort Pierce, Florida to Silver Spring on I-95 only is about 950 miles.

3. Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway from Front Royal, Virginia to Cherokee, North Carolina, about 575 miles (probably the slowest 575 miles I have driven, as the design speed of much of Skyline Drive is only 25 MPH, and the design speed of much of the Blue Ridge Parkway is 35 MPH.

EDIT:

4. I-95 from Beltsville, Maryland to Portsmouth, New Hampshire - about 500 miles.

I had never been on I-70 west of Wheeling, West Virginia before going on this trip.  There was construction along the way, especially in Indiana and Illinois, but no total closures.  A big PennDOT project to make improvements to I-70 in southwest Pennsylvania (between Washington and New Stanton) was just starting up then.

I-80 from Roseville, CA to the I-280 split at Troy Hills, NJ.  Only got off for motels/food; always got back on at same exit.  Had driven the western remainder multiple times; clinched the eastern section to I-95 the previous year.  Despite having to look at the same reassurance shields for almost 5 days, one of the better trips (done April 1989) I've ever undertaken.

I think these are all of mine that are >600 miles.  I made that my arbitrary cut off because I've driven between Denver and Kansas City probably 30 times on I-70 and that's just a shade under 600 miles.

I-80 from San Francisco, CA to Cheyenne, WY - 1,174 miles
I-90 from Sioux Falls, SD to Butte, MT - 941 miles
I-70 from New Stanton, PA to Lawrence, KS - 894 miles
I-94 from Bighorn, MT to Minneapolis, MN - 784 miles
I-35 from Eagan, MN to Oklahoma City, OK - 778 miles
I-95 from Jacksonville, FL to Washington, DC - 706 miles
I-70 from Kansas City, KS to Frisco, CO - 673 miles
I-10 from Lafayette, LA to Jacksonville, FL - 658 miles
I-25 from Lone Tree, CO to Las Cruces, NM - 653 miles
I-80 from Cheyenne, WY to Des Moines, IA - 628 miles

HighwayStar asked me to fix that for you, as I-70 doesn't go to Baltimore.  :-D

As for me, I'm thinking it's I-70 from the western terminus of I-670 to Grand Junction. If not for I-670, then the eastern endpoint of that trip would have been East St. Louis.

I-75 from Taylor, Michigan (Exit 35) to the I-275 split north of Tampa, 1150 miles per Google (including I-75 through Macon on this particular trip just for grins).

(For bonus points, I drove from there to the historic southern terminus of I-75 in Tampa (present-day I-4/I-275 interchange).  That would have made it 1166 miles.)

Second place is I-80 from Lake Station, Indiana to the I-80/I-76 split in Nebraska, 851 miles.

I haven't done any major east-west road trips so that limits me, but here's what I got. Not counting trips I did when I was younger as not the driver (though there is potential for a Portland to LA I-5 trip, I'm not sure if we had side stops farther from the highway).

I-15 Idaho Falls to Las Vegas, 631 miles. Bonus this was all in one day, only stopped a few times for gas, food, bathroom immediately off the freeway.

US-93 Las Vegas to Twin Falls, 519 miles. My intention was to use NV-318 and US-6 but it was dark and I missed the turn off, so ended up on 93 the whole way. Stayed overnight in Ely at a hotel on US-50, but still used all of 93.

US-95/BC-95 New Meadows, ID to Radium Hot Springs, BC, 505 miles. I could've potentially extended that south starting from Fruitland, ID, but I used ID-55 on this trip. Stayed overnight in Cranbrook on a hotel right on 95.

I-84 Boise to Portland, 433 miles. I do this one a lot.

Sadly, I believe this is still from my high school years, when we went to my grandparents house. I-90 at the IL 25 exit in Elgin, IL to MN 91 in Adrian, MN is 493 miles. The only trip that's close was I-80 from US 75 in Omaha to I-55 by Joliet, IL when I was driving from my old home in the Omaha area to my college buddy's place in the north Chicago suburbs.

Sorry, bub, but those are two different highways.  There's a gap in Chicago.

They seriously ought to make I-90 a coat-to-cost highway.

I'm confused. I took the Indiana Toll Road to the Chicago Skyway to the Dan Ryan Expressway to the Kennedy Expressway to the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway.

No gap, unless this was a joke that went over my head (maybe "coat-to-cost" is part of the joke, or maybe it was just an innocent typo... IDK...)

The Skyway is technically not I-90.

That's awesome.  There is something to being several days into a road trip and you are still on the same highway.

Needless to say, I took a mostly different route back -- including NY 17, I-90 and OH 2, then up into MI via Detroit, taking I-94 from there into Chicago.  Used I-88 out of Chicago (newly signed as such), and reiterated I-80 back across IA and NE, largely because of weather issues.  Cleared up in NE, so detoured up US 26 all the way through Grand Teton Park and on to Idaho Falls.  Stair-stepped back via I-86/84, down US 93, and then back on 80 through Reno and then home to Roseville.  13 overall days, with 2 doing business in NYC; short trip, but very satisfying!

The title of thread is different than what the OP requested, but it reminded me of a long run on US-219 from Glen Lyn, Virginia to Keysers Ridge, Maryland.  Today, that's about 239 miles and takes about 5 hr 15 min.  Given a number of stops along the way, I seem to remember the trip being more than 7 hours.

That's still not as long time-wise as my trip across I-64, which only took about 11 hours, even though much of it was still posted at 55MPH.  This was early into the NMSL repeal, so Kentucky was the only part posted at 65MPH by then.

Canadian Provincial route: ON 401 between ON 402 and ON 404, 120 miles

MN: ?, but I drove MN 61's entire length twice in one day for the Duluth meet in 2016, which is 300 miles round trip. dumbass me forgot I clinched all 345 miles of MN 1 in one shot

Me, the longest run on a single route is likely I-90 from Chicago's northwest side to the Rochester, NY area about 20 or so years ago.  My longest route clinching on a single run is I-24 (SEbound) during a roadtrip in 2004.

As a passenger, a portion of I-95 from around Charleston SC to somewhere near Orlando, FL.

As a driver, well, I don't really know because when I drive, I always like to make detours off the freeway and therefore, it's never a clean clinch

I once deliberately took US-36 the entire way from Urbana, OH to Estes Park, CO.

That route, FWIW, actually is pretty close to the most efficient route between those 2 cities.
Just slightly worse than US 68/I-70/US 36?

Yep.  Only about 60 minutes longer per most of the online maps, which isn't that much of a difference for a 20-hour-ish total drive.

I-90 in 2009 as a family road trip to Yellowstone began...from the I-39 split in Rockford, IL to exit 309 in Bozeman, MT.  There was a detour through Badlands NP, so if that invalidates the continuity, then the return trip on I-80 might be my answer.  The section of I-80 in question was from US191 in Rock Springs to IL-71 in Ottawa, Illinois- about 1150 miles.

I-95 is my best candidate, but I am unsure of the longest continuous stretch on a single trip.  I wonder if there was some trip where I/we took I-95 exclusively from Jacksonville or a point to the south, all the way to NJ 31 (when that was part of I-95).  But I can't remember for sure that in any specific trip we stayed on I-95 through Richmond (usually don't), used I-95 around the DC beltway and through Baltimore (tend not to), and I-95 instead of I-495 through Wilmington (tend not to).  I'm pretty confident I can at least claim having done the 700+ miles from I-295 in Jax to one of the decision points around Baltimore.

Long trips primarily on I-90 could have been broken up by taking I-271/I-480/I-80 around Cleveland or various ways through the Chicago area, looping through the Badlands, the Black Hills, to Devils Tower, etc.

The EB I-80 trip referenced in my reply #46 was a personal record for a single route.  Second would have to be in July 1988, on I-10 from the east I-17 junction in Phoenix to I-75 near Lake City, FL -- although there were sidetrips into NOLA and a motel in Slidell, LA -- but always coming back to I-10 at the original exit point.  Third -- with the same condition, would be I-40 in 2001 from the Barstow western terminus to the I-55 split in West Memphis, AR (where I shifted to the US 78/future I-22 corridor).  Funny thing -- I can't think of any N-S Interstate corridors, with the exception of I-5, where I've put more than 500 miles continuous on any given trip.  For I-5 it would have to be from the north junction of I-505 in CA to WA 518 south of Seattle -- IIRC that was only one time when there was road work on I-205 around Portland (my usual non-stop route through that area) and I just stayed on 5.  For a N-S US corridor, it would have to be US 101 from CA 20 north to (ironically) WA 20 back around '87; E-W would undoubtedly be US 50 from I-25/Pueblo to the terminus in West Sacramento back in '85.  Fun stuff; too bad my work keeps me close to home these days!

For me, it's US-95 in Nevada, back in September 2017.  Stayed on it from Fallon, NV down to the US-93/95 split just outside Boulder City (I-11 had just come into being then, and was all of 2 miles), so about 412 miles.

You know, I remember running through Macon on I-75 at some point in time.  I don't have any real memories other than staying on I-75 to clinch the route.  And the only times that I've ever driven the Perimeter was to reach Gwinnett from north/south, or to go to Hartsfield.  It would have been on a personal trip, since I wouldn't go out of my way on a business trip.  My best guess is I-75 from I-64/Lexington to I-10/Lake City, Florida, or perhaps Florida's Turnpike.  Not nearly as long as the other guys.

I guess it would be when I drove home (Bolingbrook IL) from Park City, UT. I-80 the whole way, with the exceptions for gas and food. The initial plan was to drive to Omaha and spend the night there. When we got to Lincoln, I decided I wasn't tired and we could keep going to Des Moines. We got to De Soto and I still wasn't tired. Next plan was Iowa City. Still not tired so we decided to go all the way home. No sense in stopping in the Quad Cities at this point. The last 80 miles or so in Illinois was rough as I was tired.

20 hours, 1360 some miles.

My longest ones in one trip:

I-90 Chicago to Albany, 816 miles (due to me deciding to clinch the NYST instead of going directly back to NJ)

I-10 Mobile to San Antonio, staying on 10 and avoiding both I-12 and I-610 in LA (already clinched 12 on a prior trip and did 610 later), 687 miles

I-85 entirely (during the San Antonio trip), 666 miles

I-77 entirely, 613 miles

I-40 North Little Rock to I-81, 613 miles

Didn't know it was some sort of contest.  That being said, did the lookup, and my '89 trip on I-80= 2768 miles.
Actually, wouldn't mind doing it again; hopefully next time IDOT will have put a flyover at 74/80/280; the 25mph loop ramp is pretty pathetic!

Thanks -- you needn't have gone to the effort to revise your list -- to me, it's still a matter of circumstance rather than competition.  I had the need to drive from NorCal to NYC back then, and I decided "what the hell, let's see how easy it is to just stay on one route", figuring spring storms (early April) might well result in detours.  But good luck occurred, and I was able to do the EB trip without such incident.  WB not so much; my original plan was to use US 20 across IL and IA and cut back down to Lincoln on US 77; the fact that much of that highway was 2-lane road with long construction zones; tolerable in good weather but troublesome in storms caused me to stay on 80 (or 88) for that stretch.  Did 20 some years later, when the 4-laning was out to about Fort Dodge.

P.S. -- just noticed you added the routes in question.  Guess the revision was for multiple purposes -- nice work!

I-64 from I-464 in Chesapeake, VA to I-70 in Wentzville, MO.

Did the entire interstate in a single trip, with the exception of the "eastern"  most segment between I-664 and I-464.
I'll add on 962 miles for this one for the list.

I was returning from Midway Island in the Navy and stopped overnight in SF to see if I could find a ride back to Green Bay. I ended up catching a ride on the UC-Berkeley ride board. The car owner had another passenger also and the three of us split gas and driving on I-80 until Des Moines before veering up to Minneapolis on I-35 where the other passenger was going. SF to Des Moines is 1799 miles. We only stopped for food, gas, and to change drivers.

Longest I've driven by myself on one highway is I-70 from Wentzville, MO to I-15 in Utah for 1312 miles. I did stay at a couple hotels but I was just off the interstate both nights and started again from the same point from the night before.

I did I-64 from St Louis to Norfolk VA and back so many times from 2003-2007 I've lost count. 918 miles.

I hitchhiked a lot in the 70s. Longest on one road today was I-40 between OKC and Barstow. 1215 miles, though there were still gaps in places like Winslow AZ. Technically, this was US 66 back then so it's 1933 miles from Bloomington, IL to San Bernardino, CA of the retired highway. I did split driving sometimes, so I did drive parts of it. I don't recommend this today.

I-95 (pre-PA Tpk interchange), 966 mi from I-4 in Daytona to Ewing, NJ. My SO got sick as we were leaving Disney, so what was planned to be a shared drive turned into a two-stage solo drive (Disney to a tiny motel just across the GA state line for a few hours of sleep, then a marathon push straight home from there).

My longest looks like the 899 miles of I-95 between Elkton, MD and Daytona Beach, FL.

I would've had the 1,256 mile stretch of I-70 between I-64 in St. Louis and Salina, UT, but I missed the segment between Kansas City and Topeka, as well as skipped the Eisenhower Tunnel in favor of a scenic detour over Loveland Pass on US 6. Totally worth those views though.

I'd bet you forgot about I-475 around Macon.  See post #38 above.  I'm old enough that we probably went through Macon before the I-475 bypass was completed.  But that wouldn't count either, since I-475 was completed around Macon before I-75 was completed into Macon.  I've driven I-16 to I-75 to Atlanta numerous times.  Somewhere along the way, I went back and picked up I-75 south of Macon to get the clinch.  And no, I still don't remember what I was doing on that trip.

I imagine from the many times he went from Cincinnati to Sarasota on I-75, there's at least once that I-75 is used instead of I-475. I've used I-475 most of the time on my Florida trips, but also used I-75 through Macon once because "why not", which is how I got my 850 miles on I-75.

Dear heavens, SkyPesos, stop talking for other people.

There's a difference between talking for other people (like what I did a few posts ago), and guessing that they did know about the I-475 shortcut and used I-75 around Macon at least once, instead of guessing that they forgot about it. Maybe you should've said that to yourself with the "you missed a crossings" spam in another thread, because I know which states border Ohio, and don't need someone else to tell me about some imaginary states that I don't know about.

This is a non sequittur.

All I am saying is that if someone is talking to someone else, don't butt in and answer for one of them.  Think about how that looks in real life.  It's rude.

I guess it's poor wording choice on my part then.

Though do we have to ask everyone if they took the bypass route instead of said parent route for a city in this thread?

Yes.

For my stretch of I-80, there aren't really any bypass-type routes to take once you're out of the Bay Area (for reference, mine is I-80 from San Francisco to Cheyenne).  I guess I could have cut off and taken US287 down to Fort Collins as a "bypass", but I clinched I-180 on that trip, so I wanted to go all the way to Cheyenne.

To be honest, there aren't really a lot of true interstate bypasses out there anyway.  The auxiliary routes rarely save time.  I-295 in VA, sure, but not a lot of others.

It isn't 100% freeway, but Utah SR 201 is a very good freeway or expressway grade alternate to I-80 west of Salt Lake City. I just checked drive times on Google Maps and it has both routes taking the exact same time.

I took the signed route of I-70 all the way from Baltimore to I-15, with stops for restroom, food, fuel, and sleep.

I did not take any of the possible bypass routes westbound, including Wheeling, W.Va.; Columbus, Ohio; Indianapolis, Indiana; St. Louis, Missouri; Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas; Topeka, Kansas; and Denver, Colorado.

I did take some bypass routes and alternates coming east, including in Kansas City; St. Louis; Wheeling, W.Va. and in Pa./W.Va/Md. where I took PA-43 near Washington, Pennsylvania to I-68 back to I-70 at Hancock, Maryland.

I 80 from the I 74 junction in rockford all the way to  us 101, 2025 miles according to google maps.

second is I 40 from the I 55 concurrence to I 17 in flagstaff, 1330 miles.

third is I 90 from the I 15 concurrence in butte to the end of the I 94 concurrence in madison, 1315 miles.

my theory of road trips is as few road changes as possible, though I will say that I 40 segment was when I was not of driving age that's just the route we took.   also we took 244 around oklahoma city.  we kinda had to at the time since bridges were out downtown.

I like to do that too even if staying on the same route adds 30 minutes. My reasoning is some points on the trip I might be very tired and trying to remember the bypass routes can be more challenging at that time than just following the through route.

That's a roadtrip bucket list item for me. Hope to do it in the next couple years.

For now, however, the longest trip I can recall with certainty on one highway is 785 miles on I-94 from Dickinson, ND to Madison, WI. I made this trip multiple times between ND and the Chicago area.

There was a coast-to-coast trip from Washington, DC to San Francisco that involved a significant chunk of I-80, but I can't remember exactly where we joined it. I know we went through Salt Lake City, I'm pretty sure we crossed Wyoming, and maybe Nebraska as well. Don't think we crossed Iowa, however. Until I can remember for sure, I'm not going to claim it yet.

~620 miles

I-20@I-635 - Mesquite, TX to I-20@I-65 in Birmingham.

From another trip, I can also speak from experience between Ruston and Tuscaloosa.  Don't make that part of the trip when you're battling food poisoning.

My longest stint on I-90 during a single trip was 1250 miles, between the US 2 interchange west of Spokane and I-29 at Sioux Falls back in 1999.  That was a solo one, and not particularly fun; much of 90 from Livingston to Billings was down to a single lane for repaving, and that stretch was done after dark.  Having a Peterbilt whose driver was obviously trying to make up time driving up my tailpipe for 30-odd miles was particularly noxious!

At your age, that's pretty good.  Pathetic is running over to a local apple market and unintentionally clinching VA-79 at the Linden exit of I-66 (0.23 miles).

Mmmm...  I say I-12 instead of I-10 at New Orleans counts the same as Macon.  It's a 20-mile difference while I-75/I-475 is only a 3-mile difference.  I concede the others are equivalent alternates.

And not that I'm bitter, but I've been left off the compilation.  I responded on page 1.  US-24 end-to-end in one trip, 1,540 miles.

Though do we have to ask everyone if they took the bypass route instead of said parent route for a city in this thread?

Yes.

Only for I-75/I-475 at Macon though. We aren't questioning whether people took I-470 instead of I-70 at Wheeling or I-12 instead of I-10 at New Orleans or I-280 instead of I-80 at Quad Cities.

My point is that every time someone posted I-75 as their longest, someone questioned whether or not they used I-475, but nobody ever questioned anybody on other interstates. It was as if that was the only spot where someone might shortcut a route.

For me it's I-70 from Marshall, IL, to somewhere west of Denver.  I'd have to ask my dad exactly where, but it may have even been into Utah.  However, that was as a passenger.

As a driver, it's also I-70, but from US 51 at Vandalia, IL, to US 30 at Breezewood PA.

Most 3di alternates are longer than their parent. I-475 is a notable exception in terms of being an actual "shortcut".

There's also I-275 in Detroit and I-295 in Maine; those haven't come up much yet but I'm sure they'll be questioned if/when they do.  :D

Off the top of my head, US 50 comes to mind - from US 63 in Jefferson City to I-81 in Winchester, 886.66 miles. I-70 from Columbia to the US 6/191 split in Utah is another contender. I-95 from I-20 to New Hope, PA would be another long one.

Edit: my record actually would probably be I-40 from US 281 in Oklahoma to I-26 in NC - 1014.17 miles. Actually, my bad! I forgot I had taken I-840 around Nashville. US 50 would be my record then.

Let's create a list of potential freeway shortcuts that's shorter and/or more desirable to travel, and easy to miss, than the parent route then. I'll start...

I-10:
- I-12 Louisiana

I-70:
- I-670 KC
- I-270 St Louis (rare example of a beltway shorter than parent route between two points)
- I-470 Wheeling

I-75:
- I-475 Macon
- US 23 Toledo-Flint (and no, I don't think I-275 would be questioned, as it doesn't reconnect back with I-75)

I-95:
- B-W Parkway
- I-895 Baltimore
- NJ Turnpike unnumbered section
- I-295 Maine

I-295 in Richmond.

I-694 in the Twin Cities.

FL9B (future I-795)/I-295 in Jacksonville.

I came somewhat close to breaking my record, with a trip up US-95 from Moscow to Bonners Ferry in northern Idaho. I made several diversions to hit up Washington's border routes, so sadly I can only count a 97-mile section from ID-58 instead of the full length from ID-60 (117 miles).

I-95, from Ewing/Hopewell NJ (at the time) to Boynton Beach, FL -- just under 1,200 miles.
I-40, from Wilmington, NC (terminus) to outside Little Rock, AR (I-30 junction) - about 960 miles.
I-75, from northern I-75/I-85 junction in Atlanta to Sunrise, FL (I-595 junction), via the I-16 junction! - about 710 miles.

It's signed as a bypass for I-64, with Charlottesville and Norfolk as control cities on either end.

I've used it numerous times as a bypass when heading east-west, so I find it effective. It's roughly the same time as going through the city, however it's 70 mph throughout (65 mph near I-95), 6-8 lanes wide, and mainly rural design vs. I-64 through the city which varies between 55-65 mph, plus the I-95 overlap, some tight curves (going to/from I-95 and through Downtown), etc.

Google Maps routes you that way, unless there's an incident on I-295 which there rarely is. Given how well I-295 is designed (particularly 8 lanes on the part shared for I-95 and I-64 bypass traffic), there's never any congestion even on the busiest of weekends, unlike I-64 east of I-295 and I-95 north of I-295.

I took I-64 all the way through on this past trip, with the specific intent of hitting as much as I-64 as possible, but usually I'd just bypass. I used I-295 on the return when coming from Tennessee along I-81.

I-440 / I-24 is almost always faster than I-40 through Nashville

I-840 can be faster than I-40 through Nashville, especially during rush hour, definitely more pleasant, especially with the view of Castle Gwynn, and you can drive 75 - 80 mph most of the way and not have to slow down except for interchanges

Toll Florida 417 can be faster than I-4 through Orlando during rush hour

Never been on it, although I imagine Toll Texas 130 is faster since you can drive 85 - 90 on it and more pleasant than I-35 through Austin

There's also this:

I-295 wasn't originally planned to go south of Petersburg

When the alignment was shifted to go south of Petersburg, it was to become the new alignment of I-95 (obviously VA changed their minds)

The segment between the two I-64 junctions open 12 years before the highway was completed to south of Petersburg. In other words, it functioned as an I-64 bypass before functioning as an I-95 bypass.

Depends on I-35 traffic in (1) Austin and (2) the north side of San Antonio.

The southwestern quadrant of I-410 is worlds better traffic-wise than, say, I-35 from Selma to Windcrest–at least at some times of the day/week.

For a trip from Jarrell to Lytle, Google Maps right now estimates that I-35 all the way through Austin and San Antonio only saves five minutes when compared to TX-130 and I-410.  And there's only the tiniest of delays right now, in Austin.  Add rush hour traffic, or even just a wreck or two, into that equation, and TX-130 can win on time.

Jackson, TN to Albuquerque, NM

1,090 miles

Pathetic compared to some, not bad considering I was 15 at the time (I was a passenger of course).

Funny, I've heard the exact opposite from people both that live in Austin and other places in the state that use that corridor on a more frequent basis.

I've never had any problem with congestion on SH-130, and it's better now with 6 lanes for the busiest part of it that was recently added.

If it's 5pm rush hour, and I'm heading from Temple to San Antonio, you can guarantee I'm 100% taking SH-130. I'm not going to subject myself to sitting in bumper to bumper traffic for 30-40 minutes just to save $10 or something. Especially on a long distance trip.

I-10 isn't much of a problem, it's busy but it's usually moving 70-80+ mph regardless. Widening it to 6 lanes over the next decade will make it significantly better.

I-410, from my experience, seems to move easily 70+ mph without any issues, even during peak hours.

SH-130 is a nice reliever after driving hours in busy traffic, just to get a nice long 40 mile desolate stretch you can safely and legally hit 85 mph, sometimes pushing it a little more. I-35 can be simply more stress inducing, even if there's no congestion, it's packed tight.

Let's create a list of potential freeway shortcuts that's shorter and/or more desirable to travel, and easy to miss, than the parent route then. I'll start...

I-10:
- I-12 Louisiana

I-70:
- I-670 KC
- I-270 St Louis (rare example of a beltway shorter than parent route between two points)
- I-470 Wheeling

I-75:
- I-475 Macon
- US 23 Toledo-Flint (and no, I don't think I-275 would be questioned, as it doesn't reconnect back with I-75)

I-95:
- B-W Parkway
- I-895 Baltimore
- NJ Turnpike unnumbered section
- I-295 Maine

Just off the top of my head:

I-235 is more often than not quicker than I-35/80 in Des Moines.

I-295 in Richmond.

I-694 in the Twin Cities.

FL9B (future I-795)/I-295 in Jacksonville.

Chris
I've done both routes through Des Moines and I-235 generally has less traffic and it certainly has less truck traffic. Especially if it's not during the state fair week.

I would also add the Quad Cities I-280 as a bypass of I-80 to this list, if only to avoid going in a loop at the I-80/I-74 interchange.

TX-130 is never faster.  It's too far out of the way and uses existing congested highways (I-10 from the eastern I-410 interchange in San Antonio to Seguin, plus using I-410's southeastern quadrant) to get to it to make it an effective bypass.  Even with the 85 mph speed limit it never works out.  Less stressful, yes, except a few places in Pflugerville.  They have electronic signs showing you the drive times to points beyond Austin using I-35 of TX-130 and the time for TX-130 is always slower.  Baring the roadway actually catching fire, it is always faster to sit through traffic on I-35 through Austin than drive 85 on TX-130.  I try to tell people that aren't from here that TX-130 is only useful if you are going to points on it.  If you are in downtown Austin and you need to get to Manor, Pflugerville or Hutto.  That's about it.  It doesn't work as an effective I-35 bypass.  I know people that live right by TX-130 that will still drive to I-35 so they can go to San Antonio.  It's too far out and takes too long.

Yes for me living in Dripping Springs, using TX-130 is 100% not an option since I pass several better routes just to get to it, so I will say my opinion of it being a relief route is kinda moot.

So I defer to the opinion of others.

I do have two friends who live near the intersection of TX-130 and Gattis School Road and they both would rather drive toll free down I-35 to points south than TX-130 just to get there in less time and pay for it, plus just be dumped out in Seguin (one of those friends has even said paying tolls is the convenience of getting somewhere quicker, but doesn't want to take the toll road). It is faster to go down I-35 most of the time on off-peak hours (and off peak hours on I-35 still means you are going to be at a stand still).  Maybe not much, but that to me speaks volumes that a route with an 85 mile per hour speed limit can't beat a freeway that has several choke points and completely stopped traffic.  To me that just shows how far out of the way it is.  Sure, if you are going through Austin to Laredo it's a great alternative if you want to pay for it and wan to get bounced out of your car northwest of Lockhart, but other than that its a waste as an alternate way to get to San Antonio from Austin or vis-versa.  It probably works great to get to San Antonio from Bastrop, but not Austin.

Now, my other point is they really cheapened out when they had it dump on I-10 in Seguin.  They should have made it take it's own route back to I-35.  Instead you took all the traffic you wanted to get off I-35 and just slapped it on I-10.

Yes the southeast portion of I-410 is much better than it's northern counterpart in terms of traffic, but a separate freeways would have worked better.  Now I-410 has this stupid cosign with TX-130 to the I-35 intersection southwest of San Antonio.  I hate roads that terminate inside another route that continues (like U.S. 79 used to when it rode south down I-35 and terminated magically someplace in Austin).  Frankly it's more confusing than helpful.

1.  I-70 from Baltimore, Maryland to the western terminus at I-15 in Millard County, Utah, about 2,150 miles (with appropriate stops).

I also have clinched I-70, but I started near Cove Fort in Utah (taking the loop ramp from SB I-15) at 10AM PDT on 9/22 However, depending on the timing, I think his trip could have been a bit longer than mine. I did my trip in September 2018; if CPZ did his trip prior to November 2014, I-70 extended to the Park and Ride Lot inside the Baltimore Beltway, whereas now it ends at the Beltway. (I did turn around in the Park and Ride in order to get on westbound I-70 to snag a photo of the "Cove Fort 2200" sign about a mile outside the Beltway-in the rain, at night (9/24; 6:30PM EDT)). Also, in February 2014, I-70 was rerouted over the new Stan Musial Bridge in St. Louis, making I-70 slightly shorter through Missouri/Illinois. Two motel stops, and assorted gas/food stops thrown in there, including a few minutes taking in the views from the Ghost Rock View Area and the Spotted Wolf Canyon View Area.

But the fact that the sign says "Cove Fort 2200" means I'm going to claim about 2200 miles on I-70, as should CPZ. But I'm not writing on his behalf...

Well in that case, than I'd say yeah, it's not going to be as effective being out there. At that rate, going to San Antonio, US-281 might be a viable alternative, if not the preferred route.

Personal preference. If I'm driving through long distance, I'd much rather just pay to not deal with any mess. Local trips or down to San Antonio... I can understand not wanting to use the toll road.

Quote
Maybe not much, but that to me speaks volumes that a route with an 85 mile per hour speed limit can't beat a freeway that has several choke points and completely stopped traffic.
But it can... and most often does. I've plugged in routes on Google Maps numerous times, and 9 times out of 10, it's showing SH-130 is at least 10-15 minutes faster, sometimes 30 or more depending on how bad I-35 is.

SH-130 is a very effective bypass and avoids I-35 and Austin entirely. And skirts San Antonio as well.

Here's right now... a route from I-410 just south of I-10, ending at I-35 north of Georgetown.

I-35: 2 hours, 16 minutes, 109 miles
SH-130: 1 hour, 42 minutes, 123 miles

Vice versa, heading southbound...

I-35: 1 hour, 56 minutes, 109 miles
SH-130: 1 hour, 40 minutes, 123 miles

It's hard to argue it "can't beat"  I-35... because reality shows the exact opposite.

Can't argue there... I'd love to have a dedicated route continue around the southeast side of San Antonio and connect with I-37 and I-35, and avoid the I-10 overlap altogether.

But it's not that big of a deal... You mention Seguin and I-10... quite frankly never really had any major problems with that stretch. Sure it's busy, but it's always moving 70-80+ mph. Much better than some of I-35 can say.

TxDOT has plans to expand more of the highway to 6 lanes over the coming decade, along with currently building flyovers at the I-410 interchange. So whatever problems currently exist will be fixed. They recently opened up 6 lanes heading out towards Loop 1604 east of I-410, and it's real nice to drive on.

When I've driven TX-130, I was heading from Wichita (via Fort Worth) to Mexico.  In my opinion, it's less confusing to go ...

I-35  →  TX-130  →  I-35

... than to go ...

I-35  →  TX-130  →  I-10  →  I-410  →  I-35

... for the same driving route.  So I disagree:  I like the concurrency.

I got a wild hair once and drove old US 67 the whole length from the point where it split off of I-30 east of Sulphur Springs, TX to where it rejoined I-30 near Benton, AR. If you have a few hours to waste, it's an interesting drive.

You poor, pathetic soul who has attempted twice by supplying two out of three data items needed to be added to the table.  Unfortunately, supplying the same two items twice does not make four in this case.  I can deal with one too many, but one too few?  I refuse.

Shed yourself of the pathos, mend your ways and your wish to be added will be granted.

I'm assuming you meant Mackinaw City. Can't drive to the island (which is spelled Mackinac) though it would be cool to do so. My family used to visit regularly for vacations when I was a kid in the 60s. It was awesome then, though I'd probably whine about it now because I'm sure it's all changed. (You can't even stroll on the Grand Hotel porch for free anymore.)

I guess I'll be the only one on here with a state highway for a bit. Definitely harder to do side trips on a road with no intersections with other state highways for 106 miles.

I think for me the answer would be I-65 from Nashville all the way to the I-94 interchange (unless a part of my memory is failing me) in Summer 2012, and amazingly done within the span of one day (from morning to late afternoon) -- for a total of around 431 miles, which is close to half of I-65's entire length. Along this eventful ride (on the way to Chicago) was my first time entering the state of Kentucky (ditto for Indiana and Illinois), my first time ever eating at a Taco Bell  :) (Exit 29: IN 56 in Scottsburg, Indiana), and my first time being on a stretch of highway (in real life) passing by a large array (or really any at all) wind turbines (on I-65 northwest of Lafayette). What's interesting is that US 41 actually goes through both my hometown (Dalton, GA) and Chicago, so on that trip it was theoretically possible to take that one route for the literal entirety of the trip, all the way into downtown Chicago (but sure enough, on the bookends of the trip -- departure at the exit at I-75, and approaching the destination at Navy Pier, US 41 was indeed used for a very small percentage of the route).

If we had taken I-75 south through Macon instead of I-475, then I-75 from Dalton to Florida's Turnpike would be my record (at 467 miles), but as it stands it is bisected into two legs at Macon. Even so, the stretch of I-75 from Macon (I-475) to the Turnpike (at 300 miles) is still one of the rivals for this record (and would have in fact been the record until that trip to Chicago in 2012).

Other rival stretches of highway traveled include I-30 from Little Rock to DFW, and I-40 from Nashville to Little Rock (from the same trip) is possible but not likely because I think there's a good chance we had skipped an exit in Jackson, TN (taking surface roads instead).

Rothman, I think you missed ethanhopkin14's longer segment on I-10.  They weren't in order.  Another one passes me on the list.

TCH16 from Portage la Prairie, MB to Jasper, AB - 976 miles

On a given trip, what was the longest distance you traveled on one highway.  If you went out and clinched a whole highway in one trip, let's hear about it.

Mine might be I-95 from Kittery ME to Florence, SC
I-10 from Columbus, TX to Jacksonville, FL
I-10 from Junction, TX to Santa Monica, CA

All three, talk about a difference in scenery from one end to the next.

I-5 from Dunnigan to Seattle and from Sacramento to San Diego each in single-day trips. (I've been on the rest of I-5 also, but never all at once).
I-10 from LA to San Antonio (4 shifts on a bus).

Drove on I-15 all the way from the Inland Empire to Salt Lake City in one day. Was a long drive and not the most scenic, but did it anyway.

Last year, drove US-395 all the way from Susanville south to CA-14. The only exception was when I was forced to reroute onto CA-89 due to a fire, so I still did not officially cross the border on US-395 yet.

More recently, took I-5 all the way from central Oregon back to I-405. When I was little, we did a family trip that was entirely I-5 from Los Angeles to the Canadian border.

How was the Virgin River Gorge? I've never been on it (or any of I-15 for this matter), but I heard it's one of the most scenic areas on an interstate.

It was certainly the best part of the drive, but I thought I-40 through Arizona and I-25 through New Mexico was more scenic, as you are higher up in elevation and go through pine forests, which I always forget makes up roughly half of both states. I would probably need to drive it again to really appreciate it, but when 99% of I-15 is just "desert," you don't really pay too much attention to the scenery.

I-40 from Amarillo to Flagstaff 604 miles in just under 6 hours..  We went to San Diego from Commerce in just under 26 hours and we stopped to eat twice AND checked into our hotel before we went to MCRD San Diego.

or perhaps US-60 from Phoenix to Amarillo 734 (but we may have strayed. It was a leisurely 3-day jaunt.)

Not to jump in, but it seems very unlikely that US 60 would qualify with no deviations over a three day period.

I did 983 miles on US 2 recently, from Grand Rapids, Minn., to Browning, Mont. It would have been longer if not for the closure of US 2 between Grand Rapids and Duluth that required a detour. Best I can tell, that's my longest foray on one road on a single trip.

I think my second-place entry is my clinch of I-59 in one trip, 445 miles.

Why not?  Seems feasible to me.  Bwana did say that is was a "leisurely jaunt".  There are enough small towns along the way where lodging, gas, and food wouldn't be issues.  And I wouldn't worry about the low-ish per-day mileage - maybe they had friends/family to visit on the way, or places to see.  You don't know that.  Don't be so quick to jump in and dismiss it.

The guy who operated the Arizona roads site in the glory days of MTR (I think his last name was Hamilton) drove US 70 end-to-end in one trip.

Not to jump in, but it seems very unlikely that US 60 would qualify with no deviations over a three day period.
Why not, if they stayed on it the whole way (i.e., no deviations)?

We don't know, so I'm not going to keep making assumptions. All I'm saying is I would be very surprised and impressed by a three-day trip that did not leave US 60 whatsoever (keeping in mind that if you leave the route, you have to re-enter at the same point).

In May 15, 2019 (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=18416.msg2417335#msg2417335) I stayed on CA 1 for 3+ hours for total of 109 miles (this is memorable to me because it was raining all freaking day through the whole trip.) I wrote about the day trip in the California catch-all thread.

For this topic I started at the CA 116 junction at Jenner and went all the way to Point Arena lighthouse, spent an hour there I guess, and then went back home the same way (drove back to CA 116 junction, went east on CA 116 to get to US 101 to get back to San Francisco)

I don't know if you've done the whole thing, but the entire northern alignment of CA-1 is beautiful. You turned around at the Point Arena Lighthouse, but if you went a little farther north, you'd have gotten to the Mendocino Bluffs and the Glass Beach area of Fort Bragg. Farther north from there, there is a dramatic inland swing once CA-1 hits the King Range and enters the Redwood Curtain. It's maybe my favorite drive in all of California, and I go out of my way to drive it anytime I can.

If you're ever in the area again, I'd suggest spending some time around Mendocino/Ft. Bragg. Lots of beautiful coastal trails and short day hikes.

I-40 from Amarillo to Flagstaff 604 miles in just under 6 hours..  We went from San Diego from Commerce in just under 26 hours and we stopped to eat twice AND checked into our hotel before we went to MCRD San Diego.

or perhaps US-60 from Phoenix to Amarillo 734 (but we may have strayed. It was a leisurely 3-day jaunt.)

Pick one.

Not to jump in, but it seems very unlikely that US 60 would qualify with no deviations over a three day period.

While the whole through trip was on US-60. We did take some side trips off and then back. Like I said that flying trip down I-40 was probably the long one.

Globe. That's the main reason he decided to do the drive, which he chronicled on his site.

I been through a fair bit of CA 1, besides that segment I traveled on it from Mill Valley to the town at Big Sur before the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge over the past 5 years. I'd love to drive thru Big Sur and rest of the Shoreline Highway portion. Too much for a day trip though, maybe one day when I am able to spare 2 or 3 days for such a trip, then I'll have a new record for staying on Highway 1 (wherever there's an inn/hotel of course)!

This is small beans compared to a lot of people, but I-80 from I-76 in Nebraska to the exit in Tinley Park, Illinois I get off at is about 803 miles according to Google Maps.

Now, it would be I-94 from Medora, North Dakota to Madison, Wisconsin, which is about 825 miles, but my dad and I took I-694 because it appeared to be slightly shorter than taking I-94 through downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Probably I-95 from its junction with I-26 to its junction with I-4. This was for a trip to Florida, circa 2009. Either that or I-95 from its junction with I-85 to Manhattan. I think the latter is longer but I can't check right now.

Bumping this to update my answer and maybe others can contribute their answer to this question!

Well guess what today I really did do this, although it was a day trip that took me 9.5 hours instead of a 2-3 day trip. So I must change my answer!

Now I have driven on CA 1 from CA 156 all the way to CA 46 in one period of time, which is about 119 miles according to Google Maps directions. It took me almost 4 hours to drive this stretch, including stopping for 20-30 minutes to soak in a bunch of views. But that's not my longest distance on a given trip, I returned home by taking US 101 from CA 46 to CA 85, which is 148 miles. I could have kept going to San Francisco but instead took CA 85 and I-280 b/c it's shorter Still in last place, I'll have to plan longer road trips!

I just saw this thread and wanted to add my mediocre totals to the list.

758 miles I-94 from jct. I-90 Billings, MT to west of St. Joseph's, MN (CSAH 75) (St. Cloud-Spokane trip)
659 miles I-80 (jct I-81 Hazelton, PA to Tri-State Tollway parting of I-80/I-294) (moving sister from Stoneham, MA to St. Cloud, MN)

424 (423.8) miles SK/AB TCH 1  east of Moose Jaw, SK to eastern Calgary/Stoney Trail, AB (several trips to Canmore, AB, once to Vancouver, but took Coquihalla Hwy in BC)
203 miles MN 23 (jct MN 15) St. Cloud to I-90 Beaver Creek Township MN  (current detour doesn't allow me to follow route) (many work trips St. Cloud to Sioux Falls)

Took Bypass US 52 around Jamestown, ND or would be able to have Portal, ND/Canadian border to west of St. Joseph's MN (although unmarked in concurrency in MN) (Also during St. Cloud to Canmore trips)
Still, very mediocre.

I've driven I-75 from Detroit to Wildwood, FL ( where Florida's Turnpike splits fro it),.

Driven I-95 from I-4 to I-295;in DE too many times.

Drove I-10 from I-75 to NOLA in one drive.

I've done the whole length of the original I-49 in LA twice.

US 1 from Titusville, FL to Fort Lee, NJ putting up with all the continuous stop lights from Northern VA to just past Baltimore and all the other metro areas like Columbia, SC that has bad timed signals along Two Notch Road, and from Longwood Gardens to the PA Turnpike has signals way too frequent.

I've done I-90 in SD between I-190 in Rapid City to I-29 in Sioux Falls, SD.
I-29 from Sioux Falls, SD to Kansas City.

I-70 from Cove Fort to Denver, Limon, CO to Kansas City, Kanas City to Vandalia, IL, and from New Stanton, PA to Columbus, OH.

I-5 from I+505 to I-205 near Portland.

US 101 from Crescent City, CA to Ukiah, CA and from Ukiah to SF.

I-24 from its EasternTerminus to its western end.

I-57 from I-24 to US 24 in IL.

US 31 from I-465 to its northern terminus.

My longest trips on a single road were back in the 1990s, before we had GPS, and I didn't keep such detailed trip logs that I can be certain I didn't skip a few miles getting off to eat or sleep and getting back on, or even that I didn't bypass some city on a 3di. These trips would be:
All distances are from Google.

I've done lots of cross-country trips, but unless I'm in a hurry, I usually avoid staying on the same boring interstate. The longest non-interstate runs I've done were:
That last one was actually a little longer, because wherever US-6 was signed along I-70, but there was an old alignment available, I took the old alignment.

While driving for my dispatch company out of Cincinnati in 2006, I had a delivery in San Francisco.  I travelled on I-80 from Davenport, IA to San Francisco--1950 miles.

I haven't done too many trips where I stayed on one highway but, Interstate 20 from DFW to Atlanta has got to be up there for me (768 miles). I've also been on Interstate 40 from OKC to Asheville NC (950 miles) earlier this year.

My longest is I-80 from the I-90/I-94 junction in Lake Station, IN to I-76 in Big Springs, NE (1343 km or 835 mi).

I'll join the "other types" trend too.

Interstate: see above
Trans-Canada Highway: ON 11 from ON 628 in Red Rock to ON 655 west of Cochrane (596 km / 370 miles)
Provincial Highway: Same as above
US Highway: US 2 from Ironwood, MI to Grand Forks, ND (616 km / 383 miles)
State Highway: M-28 from M-123 in Newburry to US 2 in Wakefield (375 km / 233 miles)
County/Regional/City Road (multiple counties with one number): Full length of Simcoe CR 45 & Kawartha Lake CR 45 in Ontario (53 km / 33 miles)

County Road: 26 miles. MN Dakota CR42 from Scott County Line to US61

Also, I thought it would be interesting to see how long I've been on a single system, i.e. only Interstates, US Highways, etc.. Concurrencies are irrelevant. (i.e, if I'm trying to count interstates, it doesn't matter if there is a U.S. Highway concurrent. If I'm trying to count U.S. routes, it doesn't matter if I'm on an interstate also.)

Interstates Only - 1,815 miles. From Eagan, MN on I-35E->I-35->I-40->I-25->I-10->I-19 to Rio Rico, AZ
Trans-Canada Highways Only - 1,033 miles. From MB42 in Winnipeg, MB on TCH1->TCH16 to Jasper, AB
U.S. Highways Only - 783 miles. From Flagstaff, AZ on US180->US89->US160->US85/87->US6 to Brush, CO
State Highways Only - 371 miles. From Hampton Township, IL on IL110->MO110 to Claycomo, MO

It's hard to get work done when I see these kinds of posts :-P.

Interstates: 1833 km / 1139 miles (Battle Creek, MI to Denver, CO: I-194 > I-80 > I-76 at Pena Blvd)
US Routes: If the unsigned US routes through Yellowstone count, then it's 735 km / 457 miles (Idaho Falls, ID to Casper, WY: US 20 > US 191 > US 26 > Bus. US 20). Otherwise it's my US 2 answer from before.
State Highways: 528 km / 328 miles (North of St. Ignace, MI to Wakefield: M-123 (full length) > M-28)
TCH: 1190 km / 739 miles (Sault Ste. Marie, ON to Red Rock then to near Cochrane: ON 17 > ON 11)
Provincial Highways: 1558 km / 968 miles (Sault Ste. Marie, ON to Red Rock to Timmins to Sudbury: ON 17 > ON 11 > ON 655 > ON 101 > ON 144)

Thought about it, but it's all related. And a good portion of the information is a carryover.

That one I would really have to think about.  Most of my long trips are 99% interstate, and even the short ones I will use as much interstate as possible, so the system will get interrupted if using non-interstates.  I prefer the better quality roads with no traffic lights when I am dozing on the 18th hour of driving.    It has only be exacerbated since owning a 33' motorhome that is frankly built to be on an interstate and not some windy back road (except the entrance to a state or national park).
