I was just curious: either by state or overall, what are the shortest state highways that go through more than one county within their respective states (i.e. they cross at least one county line)?
I know that here in the KC metro, MO 9 goes through Platte and Clay counties, with a small section at the south end in Jackson County. Overall, it only covers 14 miles - but it's a major route within the Northland.
IN 645 is 1.97 miles long and crosses the Martin/Daviess County line.
VA 345 is 0.49 miles long and crosses a county line
VT 64 runs for 6.77 miles, crossing the Orange/Washington County line.
Utah SR 168 is 1.160 miles and just barely crosses the Weber/Davis County line before dead ending at a closed gate to Hill AFB.
Shortest one in Colorado is CO53 which is 1.66 miles long and is on the border of Denver and Adams Counties.
Shortest one in Colorado is CO75 which is 3.237 miles long and goes between Jefferson and Arapahoe Counties.
Chris
Shortest one I'm seeing in Wyoming (with much larger counties) is WY235 which is 4.49 miles long and in Lincoln and Sublette Counties.
Chris
Georgia 228: three counties over 10 total miles (Schley, Sumter, Macon)
Georgia 153: four counties over 19 total miles (Webster, Marion, Schley, Sumter)
NJ 173 as it's around 15 miles and serves two counties, Hunterdon and Warren. In NJ that would be the second shortest.
NJ 181 between Morris and Sussex Counties is the shortest.
Unless I missed one, the shortest state route in NY to pass through multiple counties is NY 32A, which is 1.9 miles in length and enters both Ulster and Greene counties.
NY 272 is also notable, as it's only 7.5 miles in length and straddles the Monroe/Orleans county line for its entire length.
Unsigned WV-6 (Earl M. Vickers Bridge) in downtown Montgomery in Fayette County and crosses into Kanawha County at the low water mark on the Montgomery side of the Kanawha River. Total length is 0.6 miles. I don't know the history, but it looks like the county line is gerrymandered to keep all of downtown Montgomery and the former West Virginia Tech campus within Fayette County. Otherwise, the entirety of the Vickers Bridge would be in Kanawha County.
In a nomination for the "longest" shortest highway that's in multiple counties - AK8 is 135 miles long and travels through Denali, Matanuska-Susitna, and Copper River Boroughs/Census Areas.
Chris
VA 307 passes through three counties (Prince Edward, Nottoway, Amelia) in 9 miles.
Shortest I've found in MI is M-42, 10.3 miles, in Wexford and Missaukee.
Followed by M-117, 14.5 miles, Mackinac and Luce; M-179, 16.9 miles, Allegan and Barry.
The starting point of NC-128 (Mount Mitchell Scenic Drive) is near MM-355 of the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is located on the border between Yancey and Buncombe counties. Since the Blue Ridge Parkway is not part of the state highway system, the official start point is beyond the Parkway right-of-way, so that all 4.6 miles of NC-128 are technically within Yancey County.
CT 55 is 2.64 miles long (a continuation of the much longer NY 55) and serves Sherman in Fairfield County and New Milford in Litchfield County.
For Chicagoland:
IL-390, thus far, is only 9.8 miles long, serves only Cook and DuPage Cos.
Next shortest in IL-394, at 14.6 mi. Cook and Will Cos.

California:
CA-275 (historic US-40) is now just .14 miles long (the Tower Bridge) and crosses the Yolo-Sacramento County line. It's unsigned, though.
Shortest signed one I can come up with is CA-220, about 6 miles between Sacramento and Solano Counties (includes the J-Mack Ferry across the Steamboat Slough, which is where it crosses the county line).

In the same state, MO 370 beats MO 9 by about a mile, at 13 miles long. Though there's likely to be one even shorter, I haven't checked.
Idaho: ID50 is 8.092 miles long and goes between Jerome and Twin Falls Counties
Montana: MT64 is 9.039 miles long and goes between Madison and Gallatin Counties
New Mexico: NM539 is 5.840 miles long and goes between Rio Arriba and San Juan Counties

In Wisconsin, WI-134, 2.85 miles long, straddles the Dane / Jefferson county line for most of its length.
I'm on a roll and it's a slow day at work.
North Dakota: ND44 is 3.449 miles long and goes between Walsh and Pembina counties.
South Dakota: SD224 is 7.962 miles long and goes between Jerauld and Sanborn counties.
Nebraska: NE85 is 5.01 miles long and goes between Sarpy and Douglas counties.
Nevada: NV342 is 3.780 miles long and goes between Lyon and Storey counties.

Well played. I skipped the ones that were short and ended at a state border since I figured they were very unlikely to cross a county line less than a couple miles from a state border.

You're right. I was looking for all those short routes that went to parks, and forgot about the one going to the VFW home.
Another shorter one I found is M-100, 12.8 miles, in Clinton and Eaton Co.

Looks like AL 139 might be the state's shortest three-county SR, at 20.12 miles...but I'm not 100% sure of it.
New Hampshire: NH103B is 3.441 miles long and goes between Sullivan and Merrimack Counties
Rhode Island: RI402 is 1.2 miles long and goes between Kent and Washington Counties

Oregon: OR551 is 5.94 miles long and goes between Marion and Clackamas Counties

Around here M-47 and M-84 are both in Saginaw and Bay County. M-138 is pretty short and is in Bay and Tuscola County.
M-47 just takes you from M-46 in Saginaw Township to US-10 just east of Midland.
M-84 goes from M-25 in downtown Bay City to M-58 on the west side of Saginaw.
MA 33 is the shortest in MA at 5.54 mi between Chicopee in Hampden County and South Hadley in Hampshire County
GA 330 is about 6 miles and is in Barrow and Jackson counties

Shortest one in Colorado is CO53 which is 1.66 miles long and is on the border of Denver and Adams Counties.
Chris
CO 53 is entirely in Adams County. The Denver line is south of CO 53's southern terminus at 58th Avenue and I-25.
It appears the shortest highway that crosses the Denver/Adams line and also in the state would be 3.62 miles for CO 265 - Brighton Boulevard.

IN 645 is 1.97 miles long and crosses the Martin/Daviess County line.
Slightly longer is Indiana SR 140 at 2.25 miles in Henry and Rush counties: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_State_Road_140 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_State_Road_140)
SR 662 is 1.557 miles and MIGHT barely touch Vanderburgh County by a few feet. It is otherwise in Warrick County: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_State_Road_662 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_State_Road_662)
This is much more complicated considering that I live in Arkansas, where almost every state highway is split into more than one section. However, I did find a few.
AR 144 - located in Drew, Ashley and Desha counties. 24.6 miles long, shares a concurrency with US 65 north of Lake Village. Route runs along the Ashley/Drew county line for about a mile.
AR 198 - located in Poinsett and Mississippi counties. 2.7 miles long, crosses the county line near Helfer Landing. I don't know if there's a shorter one that crosses a county line in Arkansas.

That's what I get for only looking at the Wikipedia page for all the highways and reading that it starts in Denver and ends in Adams County.
Chris
For Ontario, I think it's either the 409 or Highway 49. According to TM, the 409 was truncated at the 427 (not mentioned on Wikipedia), which puts the western terminus very close to the Toronto/Peel Region line. TM puts the shortened 409 at 4.4 km / 2.7 mi. Otherwise, I think it's Highway 49 in Hastings County and Prince Edward County at 6.1 km / 3.8 mi.

I already got corrected upthread a bit. Stupid Wikipedia. And it does look like CO75 is 3.237 miles and CO265 is 2.444 miles for 265A and 0.113 for 265B in highway explorer. The gap between the two is confusing, so maybe it's not actually CO265 in the middle? Either way, if you do the whole routing of CO265, it's 3.6 miles on Google Maps, so it appears CO75 is the winner.
Side note, the Wikipage (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_state_highways_in_Colorado) for Colorado State Highways has a whole lot of erroneous info.

My guess is that you are going to find a bridge over a river that forms a county line where the bridge is the entire state highway. I'm given to understand that Virginia does a lot of this. It may be a widespread practice. The shortest state highways that I know in California are all within one county.

Washington:
SR 128 is 2.30 miles long and spans two counties (Asotin and Whitman) while also connecting to a state border.
A close one is SR 906, which is 2.65 miles long and spans two counties (King and Kittitas) by crossing Snoqualmie Pass. It must be one of the shortest highways to cross a major mountain pass.
Cheater: FL-847 is posted for 2.1 miles along NW 47th Avenue in Miami (aka Miami-Dade) up to the Broward County line. Unfortunately, it continues as a hidden route in Broward County way on up to the Palmetto Expressway (FL-826) in Coral Springs, which is about 20 miles.
Another cheater: FL-575 runs 2.2 miles from US-301 in Trilacoochee (Pasco County) to the Hernando County line. Both ends continue as CR-575, which were both downgraded from FL-575 back in 1980. Total distance for FL-575 and CR-575 is 11.0 miles, which might still be a contender.
Do we count toll roads? The Mount Dora branch of the Wekiva Parkway (Toll FL-453) runs only 3.36 miles from the mainline Wekiva Parkway (Toll FL-429) to Sorrento Avenue in Mount Dora.
Iowa's answer would be IA 316, which is less than 6 miles long but runs through Polk and Warren counties before straddling the Warren/Marion county line.
NE S-64A, the spur route into Julian, is 0.48 miles and is on the Otoe-Nemaha County border. The numbered highway which fits the bill in Nebraska is NE 24, which goes through Madison and Stanton Counties and is 10.38 miles long.
Nevada:
For a two-county route:
SR 342 (the truck route for SR 341) is 3.78 miles from SR 341 near Silver City in Lyon County to SR 341 in Virginia City in Storey County.
For a three-county route:
SR 28 near Lake Tahoe is 16.116 miles from US 50 in Douglas County, passing north through Carson City and ending at the CA state line (continuing as CA 28) in Washoe County.
Illinois's answer: (https://live.staticflickr.com/1596/25002324752_e771e36bbd_q.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/E6ns5G)
IL169 (https://flic.kr/p/E6ns5G)
Of all the dinky short state routes in Illinois under 10 miles long, most of them manage to stay within the bounds of a single county. IL-169 manages to straddle two counties, though, at 9.04 miles.
Going beyond 2 counties for Utah... is actually pretty hard to do. Thanks to the nature of Utah's state highway system (not a whole lot of mileage, lots of terrain, and almost no concurrencies) it is surprisingly difficult to get a state highway into more than two counties.
The shortest 3 county route is I believe SR 264. In a span of about 15.3 miles, it begins just barely in Sanpete County, snags the northern tip of Emery, and then drops down into Carbon.
The Utah segment of I-84 is 119 miles; I believe it is both the shortest 4+ county and the shortest 5 county route in the state. It helps to traverse the portion of the state with the smallest counties (a good length in Box Elder and then pretty short distances in Weber, Davis, Morgan, and Summit).
