Title: The AARoads Olympics
Post by: index on November 02, 2021, 03:37:49 PM
It's been years, and the AARoads Forum has continued to get larger and larger. So large, in fact, that its current posting population can't be supported. The members of the forum agree to hold games to reduce the population, however, they are torn on where the games will be held and what will be played, and how contestants should be eliminated.

Should the games be held on an abandoned ramp stub in some shithole city in New England? An unnumbered route that exists as a bizarre technicality? The middle of a busy urban freeway that displaced a bunch of poor people?

How do we eliminate? Bans? Cutting off their internet access? Death? All options are on the table, and a lot of forum members think the games should be based on roads and common behaviors on the forum. What will the games be? Does anyone think they'll be the best? The worst? Can we work in teams? Today, in a thread called "The AARoads Olympics", members discussed these questions and their opinions on them.

Battle Royale format, everyone for themselves.  Or we can do this like they did in Highlander and have random Roadgeeks fight each other for The Prize at the time of The Gathering.

Host the game either in Illinois or Alanland.

That's an insult to Alanland that you would include something so flat in the same breath as them.   Goat Jesus would be so proud and disappointed in you.

No games?

I'll go, then. One of the games in the AARoads Olympics, which, judging by the replies so far, will likely be hosted somewhere in the Northeast, is joke milking in Off-Topic. We've all done it at one point or another.

We need to add "Are you working Thanksgiving?" to the game shows :sombrero:. (Spoiler: I will be working on Thanksgiving, which is a normal day here)

As a new category, I'd add brake checking, to be held on a temporary bridge ending midway into a body of water, with a temporary Interstate designation for the event.

A category is needed for most interesting roads.  We focus so much on clinching in the road community that I think we tend to forget a lot of go for the unique, hazardous or weird stuff that isn't necessarily a signed highway.

I like "clinching" those as much as anything else.  It can be the rhythmic gymnastics to my balance beam.  I'm trying to clinch all of the highest passes in Colorado with my Jeep too.

I think the only I have left for the Sierra Nevada Mountains is the Henness Pass Road.  From what I'm to understand I'll need high clearance and 4WD to get through the entire thing.

Then I'll have to do it next time I get out that way. That's my ideal road.

I have received this message:
QuoteYou have been automatically entered into the AARoads Olympics. You are ranked #48 out of 278. You have received a first-round bye, as has everyone ranked #212 or better. The first round is a trivia round; you are welcome to team up with another player, but note that you may get eliminated if you do.

The second round, the first one you will play in, is a "guess the route" challenge. You will most likely be matched up against #209, sbeaver44. As usual, players can form alliances with other matchups.

If you test positive for COVID-19 after the end of round 2, you will need to back out; round 7 may require crossing the US-Canada border.

Even if I survive round 4, I'm probably going to lose to the #1 seed in round 5...

Hey, how about a Build Your Own Freeway contest? You choose where to build it, and also whether to do it solo or as a collaboration with other users. There'll be three categories (less than 50 miles, 50-100 miles, and more than 100 miles).
