Title: Map-making in Britain (1961) (4-minute video)
Post by: kurumi on November 02, 2021, 07:58:27 PM
This was state-of-the-art in 1961. As a computer guy, I always find analog hi-tech fascinating.

I wonder if anyone can ID the 6-lane motorway shown, or the towns briefly shown on the maps in progress.

It is fascinating how exact they could be with what we would consider primitive equipment. Now they can use GPS surveying tools, satellite and drone photos, and even the data from Google Street View cars to automate much of what they had to do by hand. And I'm sure they have more tools at their disposal to make their jobs easier and faster.
