Title: Why is your username what it is?
Post by: jlam on January 02, 2022, 10:52:24 PM
We had a thread on this about 13 years ago (has the forum really been around this long?), but I haven't found anything since then.

My username isn't very creative (just my first initial and the first 3 letters of my last name.) I thought about using many other usernames, such as NocoRoadFan. I realized that many usernames in that domain wouldn't last very long, as I'm moving out in 3-4 years now. I then thought of jlam, and the name stuck. How about you?

I wanted to name myself after a local road, and settled on 7/8 for the highway concurrency. Ironically, it's the portion of the Contestoga Parkway (local freeway) that I drive on the least since it's away from my house, university, and my office. But I think it makes for a unique username.

My first name is Liliana, and the UwU part comes from the fact that I've had a Twitter thread where I tweeted "uwu" daily for almost 2 years.

I was interested in roads, and I-394 was my favorite route as a kid. I've changed the numbers in my handle on other sites as time has gone on and other roads have become important to me, but not here because users need to ask an admin to do it for them, and I haven't seen that as a super-high priority.

My first name is Tolbert and I go by Tolbs (although changed it to tolbs17) because people like to call me "Tolbs". And I was 17 years old.

Used to be called "mrhappy1261" but no one called me that and I named myself that because I was a happy guy when going out to stuff and doing fun stuff but then got tired of it as 1261 had no meaning and were literally just random numbers, so I requested my username to be changed to "tolbs17" as it makes more sense, but now I'm 19 years old, maybe just "Tolbs" would make more sense for me. but "tolbs17" can stay as I was 17 (actually I was 16) when I joined this forum.

I use a different username on all other websites. However, given the nature of this forum, I felt like I would be revealing more personal information here, so I decided to have a different username. I'm not exactly sure why I chose a single digit.

With my Flickr account, they became connected, though.

Nickname for Delta's frequent flyer program on some other forums, denoting how worthless it is compared to other programs. For some reason, the word stuck with me after the first time I've seen.

You've heard this story before, but as my wife says "Here he goes again..."

When I was small, almost all of the roads in my hometown were dirt roads.  The only paved section of road was the approaches to the bridge over I-64.  The main road got paved shortly after we moved there in the mid-1960s.  Our side road got paved in the late-1960s, and I fondly remember that Orders-Haynes was the contractor.  The house beside of ours was recently vacated, and Orders-Haynes used the old driveway as a staging area for their equipment.  All about 25 feet from my house.  I was already hooked on roadbuilding during the construction of I-64 between Institute and Dunbar, but this took the fascination to the next level.

Fun fact:  Yes, it is true that Orders-Haynes used pink dumptrucks, pavers and "steamrollers".  Pepto-bismol pink.  All covered in hot, sticky asphalt.  The kind of mess that a little boy wants to implore on his younger sisters' toys.

It's my name without the periods after the initials. Plus, it's my email address and also the name I use just about everywhere else. I pretty much decided on this name because when I got my first ISP username and email address, I was using the same provider as my brother and he had already taken "elkins." If he hadn't, I'd have used that name there and elsewhere.

I'm positive we've had a more recent thread, possibly even within the last year or two, as I remember posting to it.

I've had no luck trying to find it, though, so maybe it was a sub-topic in a thread with a different title. I tip my hat to anyone that can find it.

My user name is simply my initials and the major telephone area code that is used here in Appleton and most of the rest of northeastern Wisconsin  (ie, Green Bay, Oshkosh,Manitowoc, Sheboygan, Door County, Fond du Lac, etc, and as far south along WI 26 as Fort Atkinson, WI).

We will be adding '274' at some time in the next several years.

MRS are my initials.  I am married, but I'm a guy, so I've never been a Mrs.

The man was part of a nickname that I had growing up.  Friends in high school would yell, "Hey M---- (my first name) man."  So the combination of my initials and man have become my username on serveral sites where I want to keep some level of anonymity.

I could see the confusion of it being Mrs. Man, but that isn't really intentional.

I could also see it being a contraction of Mr. S, who is a man.  That would portray me somewhat accurately - but not specifically.

I had the intent of being as professional as possible in late 2016, when I was already dipping my toes into the world of work (I will note that I wish things had gone over better at the special-needs private school that I left in June of that year, and after 2017 arrived I was uncomfortable with the job search assistant I eventually got, after the initial one that I had had left the since-modified Hunterdon County-based job-training/job-search program that I found via the related Somerset County office during the previous year). Even my email at the time was made in the same mindset. Of course, we were going to move the following year, and somehow I forgot my login info (primarily my password) for awhile, and tried to make another account on here...silly me, that's not recommended on here.

Big fan of movie theaters with three screens.  :-P

My name refers specifically to Wisconsin's original triple interstate concurrency between Madison and Portage.  For a time, it was the only one in the nation between the opening of the Stan Musial Bridge and the birth of I-41.  But a triplemultiplex could be any three-number concurrency.

When was I-39 added to the concurrency between Madison and Portage? If it was before 1987, then the time before that year was also when it was the only triple interstates concurrency, as I-64 didn't exist in MO yet, and the PSB was just I-55/70.

I found the name to be funny (Hot Rods & Hootenannies go together like Okra & licorice) and changed my username on here from OSU-LSU to Hot Rod Hootenanny. Little did I know that the mods here didn't care for me (or others) changing usernames freely, so I've been stuck with HRH since then. <shrugs shoulders>

There was a bit of history of frequent name changes on m.t.r. (some people thought that was just to evade killfiles, but I found some of them amusing), which might've soured some admins.

My username here (my first name, uncapitalized) is the same one I use on all other discussion boards. There was one board where the admin wouldn't let me change my username to conform to all the others, even though nobody else there went by my uncommon first name. (I recall others on that board, with more compelling reasons such as legal name changes, had similar issues.) That board eventually died, and its successor was more flexible on username changes.

Japanese for "walnut", as in a honey walnut dessert sushi at Miyake, a long-defunct restaurant in Cupertino.

Miyake is 宮家, "house of the prince", or possibly 見焼け, "the burning vision". (It's probably the former)

Guilty, your honor. Though I admit my 4-5 name changes over a decade on MTR happened when I changed ISP providers.
I had gotten the idea, for changing names, from (now ex-) friends over on two Philadelphia Eagles message boards that I had frequented back in the day.

If I recall, the original plan was for there to be two disjoint I-39s. Fortunately both WisDOT and IDiOT realized how stupid that would have been and filled in the gap along I-90.

When first discovering the internet, I used to hang out on an IRC channel for SquareSoft fanboys. Used a few different Chrono Trigger themed nicks before Yakra finally stuck.

I've been trying to figure out why your name seemed so damn familiar like I'd seen it before.

Of course, on the 13th different site you register this name to, that then has to be YakraXIII. :D

I consider that to be my "full name". One of the other nicks I used briefly was Toma.

My username is based after the car I own, which is a blue Subaru Outback. I'm not sure where I got the 7 from.

Because I like large, oversized toilets. :bigass:

I'm big and my name is John.

I didn't even know this was a thing until I did a little searching:

https://mybesttoilet.com/best-oversized-toilets/

I've known john was an informal word for toilet since I was a little kid. But now I'm curious if that's just because I heard my grandma say it a few times, or if other people know this as well 😅

I've heard it too.  In fact, there's someone in my family who named their son "Jon" (no h, and not Jonathan) specifically to avoid the name matching the slang term for toilet.

Just my name. I decided to be fully transparent about who I am (hence all the social links) as it keeps me from saying or doing stupid things.

My original username was just "jake" but I had it changed to "jakeroot". This was done to avoid confusion with the original Jake (Bear), who was on here as agentsteel53, but who was still often referred to as Jake by more senior members.

I thought about using my real name but went with the movie reference I cited on page one.  I kind of find of amusing that there has been a lot of people over the years who thought my name is Max Rockatansky.

My name is Scott. When I was 13 and I signed up for my first-ever Web forum (a support forum for a freeware 3D animation program), I needed a user name, but I was experienced enough with the Web to know that just the name "Scott" was likely to be taken, and the usual way of handling this was to add some random numbers after your name. There was a box of Ziploc bags by the computer, and I looked at the first four digits of the barcode, which were '5114'. So I made that my random numbers to go after my name.

I thought it was named after the first time you sign in to AARoads it says Dirt Road.

In 2017, I had a hard time trying to reset my email for TWC (Weather Channel, NOT spectrum!  :spin:)
So I had to think of a name, It was snowing at my high school (AFHS) and decided to name it that.
NO, 776 does NOT mean I was born in July 1976, I was born in October 2001.
Also, Snowcool776 is a play on socool775 (irony here is that socool775 used TWC, and I named it after that!)
But how did I get it to my current name?
snowc is my user account (5 letters for username) for my Microsoft Account. It DOES NOT stand for snow cover!
Previous user accounts were daysinnfan (bc i was a fan of the hotel chain, only to be skeptical after an intruder came in), daysinnfan52 (an updated un because of spam emails), tornadosurvivor2011 (i survived the tornado outbreak of april 16 2011), and also panthersdude2001 (bc im a fan of the panthers; the last 4 digits indicate my birth year)
There you have it.  :pan: :D

I didn't even know this was a thing until I did a little searching:

I've known john was an informal word for toilet since I was a little kid. But now I'm curious if that's just because I heard my grandma say it a few times, or if other people know this as well 😅

I've known that for as long as I can remember, in part because the best-known purveyor of portable toilets in the DC area is Don's Johns (to the point where when I was growing up, you didn't call it a port-a-potty or an outhouse, you called it a "Don's Johns," even if the purveyor was competitor Jiffy John).

But when I was in high school I got in the habit of referring to it as the head because one of my teachers, the late John Donohue, didn't like it when people referred to "the john."
