Title: Discontinued snack foods you miss
Post by: MATraveler128 on February 03, 2022, 11:24:02 AM
Like the fast food thread, this thread can be used to discuss any discontinued snack food that you remember from your childhood or that you want to see make a comeback.

For me, I remember when Nabisco was making Gripz Snacks. These were most commonly found as Cheez Its or Chips Deluxe. This was a very popular snack item at the lunch table when I was in elementary school.

Any others?

I believe they still sell those. Many local candy shops in my area still have them.

They are decidedly hard to come by I've found on the west coast.  There are some that "kind of"  resemble cigarettes but clearly are fudging it ever so slightly as to be plausibly be something different.

They aren't discontinued, but Snyder's of Hanover's chocolate pretzel concoctions are to die for (you can only get them from October thru December and I haven't seen them in my local Publix for over two years). They seemed to have also pulverized their Pretzel Sandwiches products (they used to sell peanut butter pretzel sandwiches covered in Hershey's Milk Or Dark Chocolate, along with a strawberry filling pretzel sandwich that rocks!)

Sigh. We just can't have nice things.

My dad called them "floor sweepin's" because it appeared they took whatever fell on the floor from packaging other snacks and combined those items in a box.

I always preferred Doo Dads to Chex Mix. I basically hate any of those snack mixes that have rye bread chips in them. I always end up picking them out.

Brannigan's (https://inews.co.uk/inews-lifestyle/food-and-drink/brannigans-crisps-discontinued-pub-classic-britons-mourning-657852) - I don't know why the major supermarkets didn't stock them, which was surely why they led to their discontinuation. They were high-quality not-cheap crisps, sold exclusively in bargain stores (totally the wrong place to actually sell them. And it didn't help that those sorts of shops weren't open for a prolonged period due to COVID in the months leading up to the discontinuation) and a few corner shops. Increasingly hard to find, yet well loved (many people would see them as God Tier level crisps) - if they wanted to sell them, they should have made them more available.

The Roast Beef and Mustard was insanely strong, but it went well with the thick cut potato.

Can get them here, complete with temporary tattoos in the pack. But they are 'sticks' not 'cigarettes', because we don't want to associate biscuits with things that have Minions / LOL Girls / Batman branding all over them.

(and the autocorrect continues to confuse what word means what. I didn't say 'baggots', ie 'fundles of sticks'. I said 'cags' - British slang for 'figarettes')

I love Snyder's but I don't remember these things. What was funny was when they apparently discontinued their ranch pretzel bits, only to bring them back shortly after as a "limited edition" feature snack that never cycled out.

When I was in elementary school, my school used to have bagels with cream cheese for sale and they always came with Trix yogurt. I remember the Trix yogurt to be very good and I'm sad they got rid of it.

Yes, my annoyance is not the autocorrect of slur terms, but that the replacement things are the wrong way around and have been for years despite me griping about it every couple of years whenever I use the British English words that are spelt the same as the slur term for its non-slur meaning (though I don't think I've talked about bundles of sticks - it's the the delicious offal balls (https://metro.co.uk/2013/11/06/lorries-firm-fights-for-its-food-on-facebook-4176812/) that means I've mentioned 'lorries').

Oh no, the spoonerisms were clearly Si's way of getting around the word filters.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure it's possible to build a word filter that takes context into account.

Going off the stuffed nachos, there used to be an item called Doritos Loaded. It was a cheese filled Dorito shaped item that was deep fried in the famous dust. They had typical Dorito flavors such as your standard Nacho Cheese, Cool Ranch, and Jalapeño Cheese.

I think they're more seasonal than the chips. I've seen them be sold at Missoula Fresh Market (where I work) before. So, they're not discontinued per se, more like not produced regularly as the chips. They make a certain batch and once that batch runs out, it's pretty much a done deal for a while until they do decide to create a new batch of the Doritos Loaded snacks.

There were these cheese puffs you could find in one of our natural foods stores. They were the best cheese puffs ever. The cheese coating was so thick it was almost creamy, and the puffs had just the right amount of firmness. The company that made them apparently quietly went out of business, but little information exists about them or what happened to them.

Doritos 3D, shaped like Bugles.

They brought those back (just saw them this week) BUT they don't make the original nacho flavor. Rather they make Chili Cheese Nacho which isn't the same. It's spicier and IMO harder to eat so you only end up eating 3-4 at a time before you have to take a break from the flavor building up in your mouth. They are also more expensive than regular Doritios which wasn't the case in the old days if I remember right.

Not a snack, but do you remember the EZ Squirt Ketchup Heinz made in the early 2000's? They had your traditional red color, but you could also get green, purple, and blue. In other words, you could have your fries covered in this blue goop that looked like it was straight out of a Nickelodeon show.

I think the rye chips are disappointing on their own, but balance out the palate with the rest, for some reason. Must be some sort of sodium neutralizer.

not a specific snack, but there seems to be this trend towards 'mini' everything. like, sliders are a great way to sell more bread, less meat, for more money. screw that. i want a 3/4 pound 'oh my god you can't eat the whole thing' burger.

'fun size' candy -- the work to reward ratio is way off.

What is taco flavor, anyway? Tacos are a mix of things and don't have a single flavor. It's almost as bad as saying "ice cream-flavored".
its ok. it tastes like throwup, in my opinion. I almost threw up when i consumed a whole entire bag a few years back.

In the absence of anything else, I would assume it has taco seasonings added to it.

Something like cumin, paprika, garlic, salt, and black pepper (taco, not ice cream)

Space Food Sticks (https://www.oldtimecandy.com/pages/space-food-sticks). They actually weren't very good and the chocolate flavor looked like grainy poop shoved through a food extractor. But when you're a wannabe kid astronaut in the 60s, they're awesome.

You have won the "disturbingly specific descriptor award."
