this isn't even a traditionally pretty sunset - it's a "sweet jeebus, we're all going to die" sunset. Enjoy! :sombrero:
How do you shoot something in infrared? Is that a lens, or a setting on your camera?
Either a lens or a filter.

a filter. a digital camera's CCD is sensitive to infrared, but to much less of an extent than it is to visible light. If you block off all the visible light, though, with a specific filter, and allow the infrared to get through, you can take photos. You do lose 6-10 stops or so, so you need a tripod even in broad daylight. You can see how much the clouds moved in that photo of the bridge.
fireworks, old traffic signals, etc...

unorthodox, but divinely inspired, parking spot selection at Mills Canyon, New Mexico.
Excellent pictures as usual. I think the treatment agentsteel does is similar to his Iceland pictures whereby the sky is processed separately to the rest of the picture which creates the HDR effect.
As for the locations of the pictures - the US-64 ones near Cimarron and Taos look familiar as I was only there last month.

Many of those in the second batch are like that. The sky in several of the pictures appears to have been enhanced.

heh most of them I didn't care about the ground so I did the same processing to ground and sky... that's why I was wondering. the only one I drastically processed sky and ground differently is the Milky Way one, as I lined up the exposures for the sky to minimize the earth's rotation, while keeping the ground constant.
I still can't figure out a way to get this view looking halfway like it does to the human eye:

the sky wasn't nearly so green in real life, and the rocks were more red and the whole thing wasn't as washed out. no processing helps. vast lameness!

almost the same view, but looking north instead of west. much better. no processing needed beyond the use of a polarizer.
the last batch ...

QuoteIdentify this train. Marked "Spirit" , this engine sits on the old Southern Pacific tracks at Ocotillo Wells.
I have no idea how it got to southern California, but there once was a "Spirit of Washington" (State) dinner train and that engine's livery matches that of the defunct operation, IIRC.
the followup ... my most recent visit to Union County
