Title: Favorite highway that's the same number as your age
Post by: SkyPesos on March 25, 2022, 09:00:01 PM
I turned 19 a week ago, and this got me thinking of the highways numbered 19 out there. There wasn't a notable highway numbered 18 (for my previous age) I can think of when I first thought of this a few months ago. For 19, my favorite is US 19, and it's probably one of my favorite US routes out there as well.
- Really like its alignment through the Appalachians, and it's part of a few ADHS corridors, including A, L and a short part of K.
- New River Gorge Bridge on the route
- Medium-large cities on the route include Tampa, Atlanta, Asheville and Pittsburgh, which I all visited before.

For another highway numbered 19, I like the metric exit numbers on I-19, but that's pretty much all I know about I-19.

Bonus question: how many of the highways numbered your age have you been on? I've only been on US 19 so far, but looking to get some more.

I guess it would have to be US 31 by default, which does have some nice areas from Traverse City to I-75 that I discovered last spring.

CA 39 is actually really scenic in the San Gabriel Mountains, even if part of it has been closed for decades.  I can't think of another Highway 39 that would beat what CA 39 can offer.

I turned 20 in January. I’ve really only been on US 20, the longest road in the country.

K-32. Nice mix of urban and rural territory (though I haven't seen much of the rural parts).

I turned 14 a couple weeks ago, so definitely CO 14, especially along the Poudre.

There's no I-48
There's a US 48 but I've never been on it, though it seems nice.

Only 48s I've been on are in IL and IN. My favorite is the eastern segment of IN 48 near Lawrenceburg.

Excluding concurrencies, I have never been on a route numbered 18. With concurrencies, I have OK 18, KS 18, and US 18. All these concurrences were through flat plains, thus not too particularly interesting. Based on what I've seen in pictures and GSV, the section of US 18 in the Driftless Area looks neat. I turn 19 in October, and if I were to use highways numbered 19 for this topic, I choose MO 19. The portion of the highway that's in Shannon County, MO is perhaps the most scenic and fun to drive section of state highway in Missouri.

I-22 heading out of Birmingham to Jasper is a nice drive from what I've seen on Google Maps. Six lanes (three in each direction), 70 mph, and a stack interchange with I-65 at the east end. I have done the drive on I-22 from Tupelo up to Memphis, and that was during February when Memphis and northwest Mississippi was hit with some cold weather (bridge decks froze over and a LOT of accidents).

As for other highways that I've driven that are signed 22, they are PR 22, IN 22, and ND 22.

US 19 through West Virginia and over the New River gorge is indeed a great route. It was particularly enjoyable for me because it's a type of road (four-lane divided highway) that's far too rare in my part of the country.

As for routes numbered 22, I have been on four: US 22, MN 22, NY 22, and VT 22A. I have to go with NY 22 as my favorite, and it's certainly a worthy candidate as it runs the entire length of the state from near the Canadian border to the Bronx, serving as a de facto border between New England and the rest of the country and passing through plenty of scenic areas and charming small towns along the way.

US 22 deserves an honorable mention because it's part of the US 22/322 overlap north of Harrisburg that's also among my favorite roads. VT 22A was pretty boring by Vermont standards, and I've only been on a very short section of MN 22 so I can't say much about that route.

Seeing there is no interstate with the number, I suppose it comes down to Suffolk CR 46 (William Floyd Parkway) or the intrastate US 46.

I guess I'll go with South Carolina 34 since I once drove a very short segment of it to have a quick look at Darlington Raceway while passing through that area.

Not a lot of great choices for 32's, but Wisconsin has a nice one along Lake Michigan and Ohio has a nice, smooth, efficient 32 through the southern hills.

Bah.

I would assume it should be a road I have actually travelled on. But for 63 I've only been on two inconsequential state highways (Maryland and Tennessee) for about 10 miles combined.

I would have to say "None".  And wait for my next birthday when I have a tough choice between the Interstate and the US highway.

I-20. Logged a couple hundred miles on it during the learner's permit days. Every Geofiction I've made prioritizes Interstates 20,24,40,64 for evens and 55,59,65,75 for odds.

I've clinched WA 24, which runs through some of the most desolate parts of Washington (including the intentionally desolate Hanford Reservation). It's more interesting than it seems at first glance.

I have never been close to US 49. I have seen the north end of I-49, but I don't think it was called that yet. The only two state highways numbered 49 that still exist I was on only once, both on the same trip, IL 49 and OH 49. I was only on IL 49 because that was the magic moment I needed gas and I have no idea why I was on OH 49. I was on MN 49 as a kid, but it's been decommissioned. I don't know that I have one for 49. I suppose since Ramsey County turned MN 49 into County 49, that has to be it.

Interesting. I noticed that there are no highways numbered 48, at least in New England. I'll be 49 later this year, and there will be more options.

I-65. Kind of by default, and I haven't been on it in years. But it does have some pleasant memories as a youth when my family used the part from Indy to Nashville to go to Florida. Also a couple trips to Mammoth Cave. Sections in Kentucky are quite scenic.

A35. Partially by default (other than a short bit of E35 in Germany, and small bits of a D35 or two in France, its the only 35 road I've used), but I did live on it for a year, spent several years at least seeing it, if not using it, most days, and had several holidays not far from it (and so used it to either get there, or while there), so it's not merely by default - I have strong links to it.

The bit through the New Forest is nice and scenic, bits elsewhere remind me of happy holidays on/near the Jurassic Coast. There's some negative memories too, but that's always going to be the case when you have deep ties.

Ask me again in a month, and it's A36 by default as the only route with that number I've travelled on. It's not so meh that I don't remember travelling on it, but there's not much I can say about it.

US 52, which happens to be the route I grew up around, mostly in Goose Creek SC.

As a kid in the 1970s I would trace it through the Rand McN and dream of driving all of it to Canada.

I am missing only the Dubuque bypass and a several mile section west of I-39 that was closed for bridge construction when I was there in 2019.

The best parts IMO are NW Illinois to Dubuque and north of Minot.

For 44, I only have a few options for routes I've traveled. As a kid we took I-44 from St. Louis to Oklahoma City, and I have little memory of that trip except for the arch from the Poplar Street Bridge and our family dog. As an adult, I've only driven the Poplar and what is now the extension between the Poplar and I-70, so it's too little for a "favorite".

I've been on the freeway part of Ohio 44 in northeast Ohio but not enough of the rest of the route to count.

I guess I'm kind of feeling Colorado 44 right now. It's entirely on E 104th Avenue in Adams County. It begins discretely at Colorado Boulevard (not even a state highway) a couple miles east of I-25, crosses US 85 at a traffic signal, then ends at what is now former Colorado Highway 2 in Commerce City. In each direction from its termini, E 104th Ave continues on for miles. There's probably some metaphor for age 44 there.

Shockingly, I've seen lots of 20s and 22s but I guess I'm the first for 21.

IL-21 covers Milwaukee Avenue, a road I'm pretty sure I have clinched. It's just another area arterial in North Chicagoland. Nothing really special about it. I don't even really feel "nostalgic" about it. But it's one I've frequented a lot over the years.

I have never been on WI-21. Nor US-21 AFAIK. And neither M-21 in Michigan.

So by default, IL-21 is my favorite.

The only highway 45 I'm familiar with is US 45 through the Chicagoland area. I lived right off US 45 for the 4 years I was in the Chicago suburbs and travelled on it quite frequently. It's a "minor" street-level highway compared to the freeway network and even US 41, but an important highway through parts of IL except where paralleled by I-57 and I-24. It runs the entire length of Illinois, from the Wisconsin border in the northern Chicago suburbs to the Ohio River across from Paducah, KY.

The only 37s I've driven are IL 37 and IN 37.

I've probably had more fun driving IN 37 (including a speeding ticket!), so I guess IN SR 37 gets the nod for now, even if many portions of it are about to disappear in favor of the I-69 designation

I have to go sentimental with Ontario Highway 26. My family had a condo up in Thornbury for several years and we'd drive up most weekends for skiing, cycling, swimming, etc. The actual highway is nice too with good views of the Niagara Escarpment and Georgian Bay.

Now I have a month to think of my answer for 27 :).

I-22 and US 22 are really good routes, but I have been on neither in real life. I believe the only Highway 22's I have been on are GA 22 and WY 22, IIRC. I may pick Wyoming Highway 22 as my favorite because the scenery is outstanding, being near Jackson and the Teton Range. I have only been on the part from US 26/89/189/191 to WY 390 (although it's a short route altogether), but the drive was great, and from what I can see on Google Maps Street-View, the section west of WY 390 is even more breathtaking as it goes up the mountain.

VA 37, I guess, probably the weirdest VDOT-maintained freeway in Virginia with strange signage and its non-freeway connections to I-81 (the south end stops being a freeway just before I-81 while the north end merges into US 11 before a diamond interchange with I-81). If not for those, it could be I-281.

Well M-42 is a short highway and one I haven't spent much time on so that isn't it. US-42 I'd probably opt for I-71 so I doubt that's my favorite 42 route. I'm going to go with Indiana SR-42 as I have been on it several times and clinched Owen County by taking it one time. It's only about 60 miles long though and one of the only state highways in Indiana I have fully clinched. It starts out at US-40 in Terre Haute and goes to Mooresville where it ends at SR-67 and SR-144.

By default, it's US 51, which runs down the middle of IL. I will turn 52 next month, and US 52 will be my new favorite because of its quirkiness (is it north-south or east-west?), and that in itself is far more interesting than the previous highway.

Mine would about have to be US 60, which I've been on from its eastern terminus in Virginia Beach all the way to just west of the Missouri-Oklahoma state line.

The only other 60s that come to mind are OH 60 and TN 60, both of which I have only been on for short portions.

US 30 pretty much by default.  However, before moving to PA in 2015, I had only been on it in the Lancaster area from PA 283 to the Dutch Haven east of PA 896.

MD 30, DE 30, VA 30, LA 30, SC 30, and I-30 just are not as exciting for some reason.

I didn't see the bonus question in the OP.

Looks like I've been on ten 40s (not including business routes and such, in which case, add another 26, and then my favorite 40 is BL40 in Glenrio, TX)

I-40
US40

CO40
ID40
FL40

AB40
A-40 (QC)
SK40

E40 (Belgium)
M40 (Spain)

I missed the bonus question too. For me, I've been on five 26's on travel mapping: ON 26, I-26, US 26, ME 26, and NH 26.

Yeah I guess US 27 would be my best bet. I've driven hardly any of it, only a small portion around Chattanooga and near Disney World. But there aren't any strong contenders. Old Ontario Highway 27 doesn't have significance to me and isn't particularly exciting.

US-27 used to enter Michigan and made it as far north as the Mackinac Bridge but has been scaled back to have it's northern terminus in Fort Wayne now so it doesn't enter Michigan anymore so I had some experience with it for some time in Michigan until 2002. There are some relics of it in Michigan still though that are still nice routes. I'd love to use it in Georgia the next time I drive to Florida and be able to bypass Atlanta I never thought about taking it before to do that but it seems like a good idea. I hated when it was deleted from Michigan though and I said for years that MDOT, ODOT and INDOT should have got together and switched US-27 and US-127's routing.

For me, it's CA 58.  Its received a lot of upgrades in the past twenty years, and there are many more to come in the next 10-15 years.  In the Summer of 2023, the Centennial Corridor will be open through CA 99.  It's a major corridor in California. Eventually, motorists will be able drive a signal and stop sign-free freeway/expressway between Interstates 5 and 15.

I don't remember driving any highways numbered 28 myself, but I'm sure CA/NV 28 along Lake Tahoe is a nice drive, as well as MA 28 on Cape Cod.

In a few months, though, it will be I-29, right here in KC.

I turned 14 a couple weeks ago, so definitely CO 14, especially along the Poudre.

you've probably driven (or, given your age, ridden) past my house. I'm 10 miles up from ted's.

having grown up here, at the time, that would have been my favorite road when I was 14.

in the current time, it'd have to be WV 51, though I don't recall much of it since I was like 17 the last time I was on it. I had grandparents that lived in the WV Panhandle at that time.

and at 17, I lived in the tidewater area of VA for a short time, so it was all about US 17.

let's just hope that I don't get old enough to where 287 meets this criteria.

Maybe in your general neck of the woods, WYO70 would be a better goal (including the part that goes into CO!).  :)

Although it's obvious, I hadn't thought about that until now. Most of us will never be able to have a three-digit highway as an answer (given average life expectancy). But perhaps some of us can make it to the grand US 101 (one of the greatest highways of all).

But would you actually be able to enjoy US 101 at 101 years of age?

Correction to mine: Just remembered that I have clinched WA-18 East of I-5. I have not included my 2017 Washington stats on Travel Mapping yet, hence why I missed it. It is the only highway numbered 18 I've been on that doesn't involve a concurrency. For this reason, and that it is by far the most interesting of my clinched highway 18 sections, I'll nominate WA-18 as my favorite highway numbered 18.

Honestly, I haven't been on many 48's that impressed me, though I've never been on US 48.

Been on state routes/roads in AL, FL, GA, DE, MS, TX, LA, and TN. The last one was probably the most interesting.

Be catching up to I-39 later this spring.  Guaranteed I'll be driving on it within days of rolling the odometer over.

VA 36, a local route.

I wish I could have seen this question last year.
I have only ever been on a very short stretch of TX 36...but since there is no I-36, Ive never been on US 36--or any other highway 36 for that matter.

However, I have been on I 35 from San Antonio to DFW, TX 35 from Houston to corpus Christi, short portions of LA 35, and parts of MS 35, MA 35, CT 35, NY 35, and PA 35....out of all of those my favorite is IH 35.

It would have to be I-65 of course cause I haven't yet driven US 65. :bigass:

FL 65 I have driven but not much to see outside forests for miles and miles through the widest point on the FL Panhandle.

You could spend this many years trying to find the parent of I-238 and still come up empty.

I'm also struggling to remember any Highway 38 that I've been on.

I just unlocked US 44 a few days ago. Unless I move or live to 202 I won't be approaching any US routes near my age ever again.

The route number for Delsea Drive in NJ, which is just a few miles from me, is my age.

Until I hit 51, I'll have route numbers in relatively close proximity to me.

38 was where I was at when I first started participating in the "lowest route number you haven't been on" thread. I had to make a special trip to NW Oklahoma to get it.

As best I can tell I've never been on any highway 49.  Maybe I'll have more after my next birthday in a few months.
