Title: Busiest exits in America

Excluding interstate-to-interstate interchanges, what are the busiest exits in America?

I-95 and NY 9A Henry Hudson Parkway in Manhattan.

So does something like this (https://goo.gl/maps/VuVxnN66VTNrjwdZ6) count?

Surely it's going to be an interstate to major freeway exit somewhere, but how about "in your area"? (NY 441/I-490 would probably be my answer to that.)

Excluding the interstate-interstate interchanges, without looking at any data, my stab at the busiest for each of Chicago's Expressways (freeways):

Dan Ryan: 35th
Eisenhower: Harlem
Kennedy: Ohio/Ontario
Edens: Dempster
Stevenson: Cicero
Ford: Stony Island
Tri-State: 95th
Borman: Indianapolis
IN Toll Rd: Cline

Highest in Colorado I would wager - I-25 and US6. I-25 and US36 probably a close second.

Another few big ones in the country - I-635 and US75 near Dallas and I-5/I-10/CA60 in LA.

A better question to ask would be the busiest non-freeway-to-freeway exits. Because of all those major freeways in urban areas that happen to not be interstates, such as US-101, the NYS parkways, Texas's dozens of toll roads, etc.

In that case, I'd say around me, likely I-25 to Park Avenue near downtown Denver and I-225 to Parker Road (CO83) right by me.

Since you're from NC, I don't blame you for not excluding exits with non-interstate freeways, so you get a free pass :bigass:. But I'll exclude them myself here anyways.

A few exits in the Cincinnati and Columbus areas that feel noticeably busy to me:
- I-71 exit 12: US 22/OH 3
- I-71 exit 19: Mason-Montgomery Rd/Fields Ertel Rd
- I-275 exit 42: OH 747
- I-275 exit 63: OH 32
- I-270 exit 20: Sawmill Rd
- I-270 exit 23: US 23
- I-270 exit 32: Morse Rd

Oh, forgot to mention. Turnpikes and Parkways all count as expressways. So do expressways, thruways, skyways, grade-separated "drives", and Soldiers Field Road.

West Virginia

The northbound onramp for Exit 53A from Oakwood Road onto the I-64 Fort Hill Bridge in Charleston has an AADT of 21,688.  It has a significant imbalance, as the southbound (westbound) offramp only has an AADT of 7,433.  The other two ramps are only 2,847 and 2,630.  But if the numbers are correct, it's probably the busiest in the state.  (Knowing Charleston, it is entirely possible that the morning rush hour traffic from the South Hills dumps onto I-64 and the evening rush hour into the South Hills avoids I-64 at all costs).

The westbound onramp for Exit 5 from the West Huntington Bridge onto I-64 has an AADT of 12,058 (2020).  This ramp carries US-52 southbound.  It also has a significant imbalance, as the eastbound offramp only has an AADT of 2,571.  That's less than half of the eastbound onramp, which has an AADT of 6,406.  The westbound offramp has an AADT of 6,398.  Something smells wrong with the data here.

The eastbound offramp for Exit 96 at the north end of the West Virginia Turnpike has an AADT of 10,300 (2020).  This ramp carries US-60 eastbound.  It's counterpart, the westbound onramp, only has an AADT of 5,694.  I feel like I'm scratching on a broken record here.

The westbound onramp for Exit 8 from Fifth Street (WV-527/WV-152) onto I-64 in Huntington has an AADT of 9,797 (2020).

The northbound offramp for Exit 179 from I-77 to Emerson Avenue in Parkersburg has an AADT of 8,635 (2020).  Which is not free-flowing.  This one carries WV-2 northbound, and the Emerson Avenue exit is also the north end of WV-68.  Care to guess?  It's counterpart for southbound I-77/WV-2 only has an AADT of 3,141.

The eastbound onramp for Exit 0 onto I-70 has an AADT of 8,625.  That one carries southbound US-250 off of Wheeling Island.  It's westbound offramp counterpart only has an AADT of 4,030.

The southbound offramp for Exit 119 from I-79 onto US-50 in Clarksburg has an AADT of 7,933.  Eastbound traffic onto US-50 has a stop light, but eastbound traffic here is free-flowing.  The parclo onramp from US-50 eastbound to I-79 northbound has an AADT of 5,681.

The eastbound offramp for Exit 1 from I-68 onto US-119 in Morgantown has an AADT of 7,326.

The southbound offramp for Exit 12 onto WV-9 and WV-45 in Martinsburg has an AADT of 7,126.  It's northbound onramp counterpart has an AADT of 6,819.

The northbound offramp for Exit 155 at Star City has an AADT of 6,148.  It's counterpart onto southbound I-79 has an AADT of 5,123.  This is the main exit for West Virginia University's Evansdale Campus.

Amazingly, the only non-qualifier here is westbound left-hand onramp at Exit 1B onto I-70 from the short US-250 freeway on the east side of the Wheeling Tunnel.  It has an AADT of 10,802 and its eastbound counterpart offramp has an AADT of 7,704.  The other ramps have substantial AADT counts as well.  It might be the busiest in the state, but alas it doesn't qualify.

I would add I-95 and SR 896 (Exit 1) in Delaware.  The I-95 SB off-ramps are much busier than the NB ramps because of the shunpiking (especially the SB to SB ramp).  On 896, the ramps to I-95 NB are busier again because of shunpiking.

NB I-41 at College Ave (WI 125) here in Appleton, WI - A single lane diverges from I-41 there and then immediately splits into four lanes for the ramp's intersection at College Ave (WI 125) (two lanes turn right, two lanes turn left).

The single busiest ramp in WI that is not Interstate-Interstate might be I-39/90 SB to US-12/18 WB in Madison.

The busiest ramp involving a non-freeway? Maybe I-94 and Moorland Rd in Brookfield.

Isn't US-101-to-I-405 or US-101-to-CASR-134 something like 330K ADT? Averaging more than the theoretical safe limit of 43200 per lane per day?

Possibly. But NB I-41 at College is exiting to a street that mgk said was the highest in Appleton. Earlier,  thspfc posted something about Madison. You're comparing it to a freeway-to-freeway connection in California for some reason.  FWIW, NB I-41 at College AADT is 13,200 which is pretty good for an exit that ends as a stoplight.
Other Wisconsin AADT (https://wisdot.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=2e12a4f051de4ea9bc865ec6393731f8) interchange numbers
I see Dirt Roads posted "northbound onramp for Exit 53A from Oakwood Road onto the I-64 Fort Hill Bridge in Charleston has an AADT of 21,688." I'm more curious if another freeway-nonfreeway connection beats that.

Almost.  Technically, both I-64 and I-77/I-79 come in along the west side of the Elk River, which is on the West Side and not part of downtown.  So even though Oakwood Road comes down out of the South Hills aimed straight at Downtown Charleston, the ramps place it just west of downtown.  But yes, this is the same bridge that you are describing.  It is also known as the Eugene Carter Memorial Bridge.  He was the founder of the local Teamsters union.

In San Francisco the busiest one would have to be the I-80 @ Folsom Street off ramp given that its the Financial District.

Oakland I-880 @ 7th Street and West Grand Ave because of the Port of Oakland.

Sacramento its the I-5 at J street off ramp, US-50 @ Tower Bridge Gateway because destination is to Downtown.

Los Angeles there are multiple ones that can be considered like I-710 @ Harbor Scenic Drive because of the Port of Long Beach.

Yesterday was a prime example of exit 136 being at it's busiest. With the Auto Fest going on in Frankenmuth the exit was extremely busy. You couldn't even make a left turn out of Conlee's Truck Stop as Birch Run Road was backed up coming from Frankenmuth all the way from I-75 to Gera Road which is about 2 miles.

I was at Conlee's and didn't even attempt to make a left turn, I turned right, then turned left on Dixie Highway and went up to the Bridgeport exit to get on NB I-75. I was punching it when I was on Dixie too doing about 73 mph in a 55 zone in a few spots. Today is the last day of the Auto Fest so that exit will be bad again today.

It really would be nice if the traffic lights along Birch Run Road were synced to to run together and stay green for about 60 seconds or so. The traffic gets backed up beyond Dixie Highway frequently and it always seems like there is something going on in Frankenmuth every weekend. But the Friday after Thanksgiving is the ultimate worse and opening day of hunting season is a nice one as well as the summer weekend up north traffic.

If I had to take a stab at busiest freeway exits to surface streets, I would say:

In the L.A. area, I-105 WB exit to Sepulveda Blvd north, which takes the bulk of LAX traffic and is very frequently overburdened.

In the D.C. area, I-495 at VA-7 which is in Tysons Corner.  I-395 near the Pentagon also has very heavy exits, but many of the Pentagon ring roads qualify as expressways.

In NYC, I-278's exit to the Brooklyn Bridge is also heavy since it provides a direct connection to Manhattan and avoids the toll on the Battery Tunnel.  I don't know if the bridge is "expressway like" in the context of this thread.

When they say that the Birch Run exit (Exit 136) on I-75 in Michigan is the second busiest exit on I-75 I do believe they are excluding Interstate to Interstate exits because I just don't see how it's the second busiest exit on I-75. It is a very busy exit but I-75 travels through Detroit, Cincinnati, Atlanta and Tampa and into Miami. I would have guessed that an exit in one of those metros was the busiest but I'm not sure.
