Title: Roads that transit each County Seat in One Specific State
Post by: roadman65 on May 14, 2022, 11:11:46 AM
US 101 in CA comes close, but misses one county seat out of all the counties it's aligned through. San Benito is the one exception as Hollister, not on the route is it's seat.

US 90 in Florida enters Nassau County where it's seat is no where near it, but enters all other seats of every other Florida County.

US 13 in Delaware does two of the three counties of the state, although at least Sussex County Seat of Government is served by a child of it, US 113.

US 199 at one time in two states hit both of its two counties served in OR and CA.

I have yet found the perfect US Route that serves all state counties it transits. Are there any for real.

US 136 in Missouri hits every county seat on its route. Missouri has about 100 counties. No way does any highway hit them all.

For US highways in Indiana, US 50 comes very close. Of the 8 counties is passes through, it enters the city limits of 7 county seats. The 8th is Jennings County, where it misses Vernon by a few miles.

US 24 also comes close as it hits 7 of 8, missing Rensselaer in Jasper County by several miles.

There are a few state highways which do this.

IN 15 enters the county seat in all four counties.
IN 44 goes 6 for 6.

Probably a couple others I haven't thought of.

US 2 in Michigan (UP) is an all-but-one: It goes through Menominee County, but not the city of Menominee.

So close; thought that I had one ...

US 6 in Pennsylvania crosses 11 counties and goes through 10 county seats.  Only Erie County stands in its way.

In MN:

US 53: 2/2
MN 61: 3/3

MN 371 is 3/3 if you include its business route in Brainerd (was 4/4 when it was former US 371 and ended in Bemidji)

US-219 almost hits every county seat along its way in West Virginia (Union/Monroe County, Lewisburg/Greenbrier County, Marlinton/Pocahontas County, Elkins/Randolph County and Parsons/Tucker County), but it just barely slips into Preston County before exiting into Maryland.  That's almost 200 miles through five counties and a sliver of another, which is fairly unusual for this part of the country.

For that matter, US-219 used to connect another county seat in West Virginia (Princeton/Mercer).  That doesn't seem quite fair, since US-219 had to pass through a plug of Giles County, Virginia that extends up into the profile of the West Virginia ridgeline border.

Better say it before someone beats me to it:  US-219 hits every county seat along the way in Maryland (Oakland/Garrett County).   :pan:

US 19 hits 9/9 county seats along its route in West Virginia: Princeton (Mercer County), Beckley (Raleigh County), Fayetteville (Fayette County), Summersville (Nicholas County), Sutton (Braxton County), Weston (Lewis County), Clarksburg (Harrison County), Fairmont (Marion County), and Morgantown (Monongalia County).

WV 16 hits 9/10: Welch (McDowell County), Pineville (Wyoming County), Beckley (Raleigh County), Fayetteville (Fayette County), Clay (Clay County), Grantsville (Calhoun County), Harrisville (Ritchie County), and St. Marys (Pleasants County). It misses Summersville in Nicholas County.

Utah has three US routes that hit the seat of every county they pass through: US 91 (2/2), US 189 (3/3), and US 491 (1/1). US 89 comes very close (11/12).

US 91 used to be a lot more impressive as it passed through the seat of all 11 Utah counties it entered at its full pre-interstate extent. However, it does still have a claim to fame: it also enters the seat of each county along it in Idaho, meaning it serves the seat of every county along its present route.

Colorado has six US highways:
US84 ends in Pagosa Springs, county seat of Archuleta County. This is the only county in Colorado US84 travels through. (1)
US85 travels through the county seats of Las Animas, Huerfano, Pueblo, El Paso, Douglas, Arapahoe, Denver, Adams, and Weld Counties. (9)
US138 travels through the county seats of Logan and Sedgwick Counties.  (2)
US350 travels ends at the county seats of Las Animas and Otero Counties.  (2)
US491 travels through the county seats of Montezuma and Dolores Counties. (2)
US550 travels through the county seats of Montrose, Ouray, San Juan, and La Plata Counties. (4)

Somewhat cheating since it's intrastate, but US350 meets this criteria.

US 19 hits 9/9 county seats along its route in West Virginia: Princeton (Mercer County), Beckley (Raleigh County), Fayetteville (Fayette County), Summersville (Nicholas County), Sutton (Braxton County), Weston (Lewis County), Clarksburg (Harrison County), Fairmont (Marion County), and Morgantown (Monongalia County).

In my lifetime, US-19 has gone through a bunch a changes affecting the county seats in West Virginia.

Before Corridor L was completed, US-19 used to go through Sutton but not Fayetteville (Fayette County).  Then in 1971, I-79 was completed from Frametown (Exit 51) to Cern (Exit 62) along with the northern portion of Corridor L.  After I-79 opened up from Cern northward to a temporary exit at Gem Road (now WV-5) in 1973, Sutton got completely bypassed with the I-79/US-19 multiplex splitting the difference between Gassaway and Sutton.  Once Corridor L was completed across the New River Gorge Bridge, US-19 finally passed through Fayetteville.

The little unincorporated town of Cern was located along (then) US-19/WV-4 at what's now Exit 62 on I-79/US-19.  Most of the houses were demolished to make way for the exit.  For maybe a decade after Exit 62 was completed, there was still a placename sign for Cern near the northbound exit trumpet.  This will always be the Cern exit in my book, so Sutton will forevermore be completely bypassed by US-19.  Except...

It now looks like Sutton has annexed some exclave areas that cross both sides of Exit 62.  So maybe US-19 really does hit all nine county seats along the way.

Fun fact:  The USGS Map used by Topoquest for the Sutton area is not dated, but it shows US-19 multiplexed with I-79 from Exit 57 to Exit 62 and then dropping off onto WV-4 eastward to the edge of downtown Sutton.  That was just for a short, almost forgotten timeframe.  Thanks for a blast from the past!

US 2 is 5/6 in Washington.  Completely misses Ephrata.

US 30 in Iowa passes several miles to the south of Benton County's county seat, Vinton, but heading west from there US 30 passes through all 8 county seats in the remaining counties along its route in Iowa. In addition, US 30 goes through the county seats of all 13 counties along its route in Nebraska and all 5 counties along its route in Wyoming before missing the first county seat in Idaho, meaning that US 30 has a streak of 26 consecutive county seats.

Not as impressive but still noteworthy is that US 34 goes through the county seats of all 11 counties along its route in Iowa. Until it was rerouted into Sarpy County, Nebraska on a new Missouri River bridge in 2014, US 34 had a streak of 20 consecutive county seats with all 11 county seats in Iowa and 9 county seats in Nebraska.

IA 14 serves the seats of all 8 counties it passes through: Charles City (Floyd), Allison (Butler), Grundy Center (Grundy), Marshalltown (Marshall), Newton (Jasper), Knoxville (Marion), Chariton (Lucas), and Corydon (Wayne).

Honorable mentions among north-south roads: US 218 serves county seats in 9 of its 11 counties, missing only New Hampton (Chickasaw) and Washington (Washington). US 61 serves 6 of 7 seats (missing Clinton) but serves both of Lee County's seats, Fort Madison and Keokuk.

And two highways start and end at county seats in consecutive counties. IA 56 connects West Union (Fayette) and Elkader (Clayton), and IA 130 connects Tipton (Cedar) and Davenport (Scott).

There needs to be some more stringent minimum qualifying criteria added to the OP, because SH 56 in Texas transits 2/2 county seats, Grayson (Sherman) and Fannin (Bonham). SH 56 is the old US 82 before it was four-laned on new terrain.

US-35 in West Virginia once hit Pt. Pleasant (Mason County) and Charleston (Kanawha County), but skirted past the county seat for Putnam County on the north side of the Kanawha River.  After the Silver Bridge Disaster, it hit Winfield (Putnam County) and still went through Mason and Kanawha counties but on the south side of the river.  After US-35 was rerouted over to Scott Depot at the new Exit 40 on I-64, it bypassed Winfield a mile to the west and no longer enters Kanawha County.  After recent completion of the four lane US-35 from Ohio, Winfield is completely bypassed and US-35 serves none of its county seats.

Now that US-33 in West Virginia has been rerouted though Ravenswood, it hits Ripley (Jackson County), Spencer (Roane County), Glenville (Gilmer County), Weston (Lewis County), Buckhannon (Upshur County), Elkins (Randolph County) and Franklin (Pendleton County).  That makes it 7/8 since it also zips across tiny Calhoun County.

I-94 also goes through every county seat. St. Clair (Port Huron), Wayne (Detroit), Washtenaw (Ann Arbor), Jackson (Jackson), Calhoun (Marshall), Kalamazoo (Kalamazoo), Van Buren (Paw Paw), Berrien (St. Joseph).

M-21 ends in Grand Rapids Township. The city line at that location is just west of the East Beltline right-of-way.

I-94 also appears to just miss Jackson as well. The city line runs along a section of Boardman Road next to the western US 127 interchange, which is south of I-94. However, the easier disqualifier is that I-94 comes nowhere near the city of St. Joseph; I-94 is about 2 miles away from the city line on M-63, and gets about a mile and a half at the closest to the southern part of the city.

US-70 hits an amazing 16 of 20 county seats as it meanders across North Carolina:  Marshall (Madison County), Asheville (Buncombe County), Marion (McDowell County), Morganton (Burke County), Statesville (Iredell County), Salisbury (Rowan County), Thomasville (Davidson County), Greensboro (Guilford County), Hillsborough (Orange County), Durham (Durham County), Raleigh (Wake County), Smithfield (Johnston County), Goldsboro (Wayne County), Kinston (Lenoir County), New Bern (Craven County) and Beaufort (Carteret County).  It barely misses Newton (Catawba County), barely misses Graham (Alamance County) and runs through a sliver of Randolph County and a sliver of Jones County.  Historically, US-70 didn't enter either Randolph or Jones counties, making it 16/18.

US-70 also misses Guilford Courthouse (which hasn't been the county seat for many years).

NC-10 (the predecessor of US-70) was also routed through Newton and Graham.  Ironically, it didn't hit Marshall but was routed through Bryson City (now US-19).  That was 18/19 counties.

The famous Murphy -to- Manteo route (US-64) hits 20 county seats across North Carolina:  Murphy (Cherokee County), Hayesville (Clay County), Franklin (Macon County), Brevard (Transylvania County), Hendersonville (Henderson County), Rutherfordton (Rutherford County), Morganton (Burke County), Lenoir (Caldwell County), Taylorsville (Alexander County), Statesville (Iredell County), Mocksville (Davie County), Asheboro (Randolph County), Pittsboro (Chatham County), Raleigh (Wake County), Nashville (Nash County), Tarboro (Edgecombe County), Williamston (Martin County), Plymouth (Washington County), Columbia (Tyrrell  County) and Manteo (Dare County).  However, it still misses 3 county seats as it skips through Jackson County and Davidson County and just clips Franklin County.

Fun fact: Manteo is the only county seat in North Carolina not on the mainland.

US 85 in SD (Deadwood, Belle Fourche, Buffalo)
I-80 in WY (Evanston, Green River, Rawlins, Laramie, Cheyenne, yes it only goes through 5 counties)
I-25 in WY (Cheyenne, Wheatland, Douglas, Casper, Buffalo)
US 87 in WY (Cheyenne, Wheatland, Douglas, Casper, Buffalo, Sheridan)
I-90 in WY (Sheridan, Buffalo, Gillette, Sundance, yes it only goes through 4 counties)
US 30 in WY (Kemmerer, Green River, Rawlins, Laramie, Cheyenne)
US 85 in WY (Cheyenne, Torrington, Lusk, Newcastle)

Wyoming has a lot of these, having only 23 counties helps I guess.

I-75 in Michigan almost hits every county seat. You have Monroe, Detroit, Pontiac, Flint, Saginaw, Bay City, Standish, West Branch, Roscommon, Grayling, Gaylord, St. Ignace and Sault Ste. Marie. The only two it's missing is Petoskey and Cheboygan. It barely misses a few of the ones I included that it does go through like Pontiac, Saginaw and Bay City but it's honestly close enough.

I-69 doesn't hit all the county seats, it hits Port Huron, Lapeer, Flint, Charlotte, Marshall and Coldwater. It misses St. Johns and Corunna.

I-96 hits Muskegon, Grand Rapids, misses Ionia by about 7 miles, also misses Charlotte and Mason, does hit Howell though, misses Pontiac and hits Detroit.

I-8, CA-140, and CA-17 all qualify, although none are super impressive with only two counties each.  CA-140 also cuts it super close depending on whether its western end is considered to end at the center of the bridge crossing I-5 or at the western end of that bridge.  I cannot find any postmile information showing that it has Stanislaus County mileage, so I'll presume it ends in Merced County right at the Merced/Stanislaus County Line.

The longest seems to be CA-82 with three whole counties, and man, it barely qualifies.

US-52 hits six county seats in North Carolina with Mount Airy (Surry County), Winston-Salem (Forysth County), Lexington (Davidson County), Spencer (Salisbury County), Albemarle (Stanly County) and Wadesboro (Anson County), but misses two as it cuts through a sliver of Stokes County and a sliver of Cabarrus County.  But it also picks up the fictional county seat of Mount Pilot in the Andy Griffith Show (actual name of the town is Pilot Mountain, also in Surry County).  Alas, Mayberry wasn't a county seat in the Andy Griffith Show but it was somehow the location of the Sheriff's Office (and was based on the real town of Mount Airy, which is truly the county seat).

On that same Mayberry theme, US-64 and US-421 go through the fictional county seat of Siler City (which is a real town of that same name, but not the real county seat of Chatham County).

Surry County's seat is Dobson (on Bus US 601, not US 52), not Mt. Airy.

For a near miss, US 127 gets 8/9, missing Defiance

US-127 almost continues the tradition into Michigan. Splitting the Hillsdale/Lenawee county line, it misses both Hillsdale and Adrian. Then it hits every seat northward until Roscommon County.

Roll back to the days of US-27 in Michigan (US-127 supplanted it north of Lansing, and I-69 absorbed it south of Lansing), the only county seat it missed was Roscommon.

US-41 looks like it might nail it in Michigan, but Keweenaw (barely) and Alger counties eliminate it.

US-31 in Michigan used to contact every county seat except Antrim. The pedantic out there will note it just barely goes into Cheboygan County (though historically it only rode the county line, and do the ramps to/from I-75 count?). The same pedantic folk will note it barely misses Ludington, and the freeway reroutes around St. Joseph and Benton Harbor turn it into a near miss.  But close enough.

I-75, if you're not asking the pedantics, nails every county seat in Michigan except Cheboygan. It comes within 500 yards of touching Gladwin County, but no closer.

Now to Wisconsin. And seriously, the highways in this state take some strange paths. I never would've thought of tying together Withee and Edgerton together with the same route number.

I don't see any routes that cross the state that don't miss at least one county seat along the way.   I'm just naming off the seats themselves as it's easier.

I-75 definitely is inside Emmet County for a bit. So that's a miss there.

If we want to exclude roads that are only in one county (or never leave NYC), NY doesn't have a ton of these. But here we go...

I-787: Albany (Albany) and Troy (Rensselaer)
NY 9G: Poughkeepsie (Dutchess) and Hudson (Columbia)
NY 17C: Owego (Tioga) and Binghamton (Broome)
NY 25: Jamaica (Queens), Mineola (Nassau), and Riverhead (Suffolk)
NY 33: Buffalo (Erie), Batavia (Genesee), and Rochester (Monroe)
NY 66: Hudson (Columbia) and Troy (Rensselaer)

I-684 maaaaaaaay qualify. South end is on the border of White Plains (Westchester) and north end is within Carmel town (Putnam), both of which are county seats.

It is possible there are others I'm missing, but there are a lot of near-misses in this state. Several counties have seats which aren't what you would expect. I-190 misses Lockport (Niagara), NY 5 misses Mayville (Chautauqua) and Geneseo (Livingston), NY 32 misses Catskill (Greene) and Ballston Spa (Saratoga), US 9 misses Carmel (Putnam) and Ballston Spa (Saratoga), US 11 misses Oswego (Oswego) and Plattsburgh (Clinton).

Surry County's seat is Dobson (on Bus US 601, not US 52), not Mt. Airy.

Oops.  I know Dobson well and wasn't thinking.  Guess I caught up in Andy Griffith's world while researching US-421 (which didn't warrant posting).  I think I'll have another Big Orange.

Fun fact:  A close friend of mine passed away last year at age 91.  Over the years he was frequently mistaken as Andy Griffith, a problem that increased 100-fold when he moved from Michigan to North Carolina about 20 years ago.  After he retired, he started doing a comedy schtick called Almost Andy.  As best as he could tell, he was the only Andy Griffith look-a-like.

Although there's already a bunch posted from West Virginia, it seems appropriate to post the entire list in a modified JREwing78 format.  "Wild and Wonderful" West Virginia is also the home of the most "one-hit wonders".  Counties are in (parentheses).  Near-miss county seats include the courthouse location.  Counties where the route barely cuts through a sliver are in ((double parentheses)).

Illinois 71 is kind of a cheap one, only passing through three counties, but it counts.  Add 100 to get another cheap qualifier, Illinois 171, which only passes through two counties.  Joliet and Chicago are all it needs to connect to, and it does.

I thought Illinois 146 would fit the bill for sure, but the western end joins Illinois 3 south into Alexander County...its clip of Alexander County's northwest corner invalidates it because it doesn't meet Cairo.

CT doesn't have county seats, but if they did, the seats would be the namesakes for Hartford, New Haven, Litchfield, and New London.  The others would be Bridgeport (Fairfield), Middletown (Middlesex), Vernon/Rockville (Tolland), and Windham/Willimantic (Windham).  For interstates:

84: Misses Fairfield, New Haven, and (for the 2 miles it spends there) Windham.  Hits Hartford and Tolland

91: Hits all 3. New Haven, Middlesex (barely), and Hartford.

95: Hits 3 of 4 (Fairfield, New Haven, New London).  Misses Middlesex

291: Misses Hartford

384: Misses Hartford and Tolland

395: Barely missed New London.  Misses Windham

684: Really?!?

691: Misses both New Haven and Hartford

US ROUTES

1: See I-95

5: Hits both New Haven and Hartford (barely)

6: Hits Hartford, and the town of Windham (but not Willimantic proper anymore).  Misses Fairfield, New Haven, Litchfield, and Tolland.

7: Missed both Fairfield and Litchfield

44: Hits Hartford.  Misses Litchfield, Tolland, and Windham

202: Hits Litchfield.  Misses Fairfield and Hartford.
