Title: Toll booths in the middle of bridges?
Post by: tsmatt13 on June 25, 2022, 06:21:56 PM
Have you encountered any bridges that have toll booths in the middle of the bridge? There are two that I know of in NJ: the Grassy Sound Bridge and the Middle Thorofare Bridge. Both of these bridges have toll booths servicing one side but not the other, and I believe they are also drawbridges as well. Are there any other examples of this close to where you are from?  :D

What one of these looks like: https://www.google.com/maps/@39.0297552,-74.8009117,3a,75y,36.7h,91.72t,0.51r/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sSMIkmLqNcMOsn5Kf0DFtRw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192 (https://www.google.com/maps/@39.0297552,-74.8009117,3a,75y,36.7h,91.72t,0.51r/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sSMIkmLqNcMOsn5Kf0DFtRw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192)

Most of the Cape May County Bridge Commission Bridges operate in this fashion.  Before they went with one way tolling, they would collect the toll in each direction. Normally one toll collector would alternate collecting the toll from both directions; on busier days around the weekend, they would squeeze two collectors in the small booth.

The original Seven Mile Bridge had one on Pigeon Key in the center of the span.

The Tobin Bridge in Massachusetts had its toll plaza between the two through truss sections (https://goo.gl/maps/acvDBaXqW5Lokfxm7). The booths were removed in the mid-2010s after AET was implemented and the current toll gantries are on the southwest approaches.

Does the Tri-Burroughs bridge complex count? IIRC it had 2 large toll plazas in a configuration where each motorist only had to pay 1 toll, no matter what way they were going.

I believe the former I-74 suspension bridges across the Mississippi did at one time.  Google aerial where I think the plaza was. (https://goo.gl/maps/T8Rv6Ryx5pChdy9T7)

I plucked this from the internet a few years back. I believe this is it and it was indeed at that spot.

Is there a reason why the lower level imagery won't let you near the former toll plaza?

Also where did bridge personnel  park their cars?

Admin building under the former toll plaza. There was an elevator from there up to the toll plazas.

I thought the US 67 bridge over the Mississippi River in the Quad Cities did when it was a toll bridge.

I seem to recall seeing somewhere it did, possibly under the odd shelter-like structure. (https://goo.gl/maps/rRNkgZsVbNNmLyut6)

That is a weird one. Since you have to pay the toll to continue over it, it feels more like a toll road with a bridge section, like the Grand Island bridges.

The Sunshine Skyway sort of as the SB plaza is over the first bridge of the skyway. It's a small channel for pleasure craft to pass without going out into the bay to cross the highway.

Fort Madison IA to Niota (EFM) IL still does have one in the middle of its toll bridge (road/rail).
