Title: Furthest-apart pairs of freeway exit signs for the same town on the same freeway
Post by: KCRoadFan on June 27, 2022, 08:25:42 PM
I was just thinking about a 2003 drive to Denver, Colorado, in which I remember seeing a sign for the town of Kiowa, at Exit 352 for CO 86 just west of Limon. After 48 miles, there was another reference to Kiowa at Exit 304 in Bennett, in the eastern outskirts of Denver, at an exit leading to a county road. There were no mentions of Kiowa in between; in reality, Kiowa is at the intersection of the two roads accessed by those exits, and is located rather far off I-70.

That has to be the record (or at least close to it) for the greatest distance between two exits on the same freeway with signage referring to the same town. What are some of the other far-apart pairs you've seen throughout the country? (These have to be actual exit signs for towns not located along the freeway; that way, it rules out merely listing pull-through signage for control cities.) I'm eager to find out more!

NYC on I-90 WB  Exit 78 in MA, I-87 South split in Albany (about 115 miles)

New Haven on I-84 WB in CT.  Exit 57 (CT 15) and Exit 11 (CT 34).  49 miles apart.

Indianapolis on I-64 at its interchanges with I-70 and I-65: 260 miles (will be much shorter once I-69 NB is signed for Indy at Evansville)

Louisville on I-70 at its interchanges with I-64 and I-65: 240 miles

I-81, I-88, and I-90 form a triangle where this happens on all three routes.

I-81 mentions Albany at I-88 (https://goo.gl/maps/MYpSRUYuavjKxpv27) and I-90 (https://goo.gl/maps/zZNHbxPdgypFVa4K7), 74 miles apart.
I-90 mentions Binghamton at I-88 (https://goo.gl/maps/i3CA8km1s9m3cD4KA) and I-81 (https://goo.gl/maps/eFVMc64Yy7n3rrPn9), 124 miles apart.
I-88 mentions Syracuse at both termini, but only in the terminating direction, so I'm not sure if that counts. If it does, it's 117 miles.

On both directions of I-94 in Michigan, Lansing is a main control city at I-69 (Marshall) and I-696, about 121 miles apart.

On both directions of I-75, Lansing is a main control city at I-96 and I-69, about 70 miles apart.

Orlando is mentioned on I-75 first at the Florida Turnpike in Wildwood and in Mango, FL for I-4.  Total distance of 65 miles.

However it may be longer if the Sawgrass Expressway Exit near Davie, FL is still using Orlando for its control city NB as its 244 miles apart from I-4.

Then on I-70 in both Ohio and Indiana have Cincinnati at I-74 now near Indy and at I-71 in Columbus, OH. over 180 miles apart.

Baltimore along I-76/PA Turnpike: 81 miles from I-70 east at Breezewood to I-83 at Harrisburg West.

Charleston (WV) along I-81 in VA: 119 miles from I-77 north at Wytheville to I-64 west at Lexington.

Isn't Norfolk also signed at I-64 east (exit 75)? That would cut the distance down to 64 miles.

I don't think the intention is necessarily the exits with the farthest distance with no other indications of the town in between. I think it's just the widest span. OP, feel free to correct me, otherwise a lot of the answers here probably can be nixed (including my I-10 example which I believe is the largest at the moment). Edit - Actually looks like there aren't any other references to Dallas on I-10 in between. I-35 only lists Austin. So I still think my 480 miles example leads.

Also, as a grammar nazi for the thread, we should be using 'farther' not 'further'.

farther : distance :: further : extent

I was going to mention this alongside Louisville for I-70 but then realized that I-57 is in between St Louis and Indy, which shortens the distance. Still about 140 miles between I-57 and I-65 though.

Gotcha. So intermediate references do matter. If we can use non-freeways (you used 'freeway' in the subject line, so wasn't sure if we could include other roads), there are other good examples too. AK1 turning off to Fairbanks from both AK2 and AK3 280 miles apart, etc.

Orangeburg, South Carolina along I-95 probably doesn't count but is still an interesting example.  Exit 42 for US-21 (Yemassee/Orangeburg) is about 55 miles from Exit 97 for US-301/US-15 (Orangeburg) in Santee.  But if I recall correctly, Orangeburg is marked only on the northbound BGS for Exit 42 and only on the southbound BGS for Exit 97.

I specifically remember South Carolina when I think of this thread because of the many similar situations using both I-95 and I-26 (again, Orangeburg being the most extreme with almost 58 miles between I-95 Exit 42 and I-26 Exit 154).  I would have guessed this to be a tad shorter than along I-95 proper, since you are cutting off the angle on I-26.

Two more I can think of

- I-65 Cincinnati at I-71 and I-74: 110 miles
- Not sure if this would count, but at I-64 EB's interchange with I-57, there's a mention of I-24 and Nashville (https://goo.gl/maps/2kqoqfxTrWWeDV9i8). If so, it would be 190 miles between that and the next mention of Nashville, at I-65 in Louisville.

The longest stretch in North Carolina is for of all places, Chapel Hill (which is located right alongside I-40).  For I-40, there are three consecutive exits marked for Chapel Hill (Exit 273, Exit 270 and Exit 266) plus Exit 148 in Graham (NC-54, which is marked for Chapel Hill/Carrboro).  Those exits are 22 miles apart along I-40, but the latter one is numbered with the I-85 sequence.  (Note that Exit 148 on I-85 is located near Mile Marker 149).

Taking that same idea over on the I-85 side, it is only about 17.5 miles between the two exits marked for Chapel Hill (Exit 148 and Exit 165).  That needs a big asterisk, because although Chapel Hill is not a control point shown on the BGS at the I-85/I-40 split, there are small green signs marked with secondary control destinations of "South Durham" and "Chapel Hill" for Exit 163 (I-40).

I-95 in Florida uses Orlando as a control city at Golden Glades for the Turnpike.  Then next, if your not counting supplemental signs as at Jupiter and Fort Pierce there are guides to inform motorists of the crossovers to the Turnpike that runs right next to it via SR 706 and SR 70, is SR 528 near Cocoa as main sign control cities.  Thus a complete distance of 193 miles between the two.

If I'm missing something, let me know. I changed my thought process from "just farthest away exits period" (could have exits pointing towards that city between those spots) to "farthest exits without having another exit listed for that city in between".

How about I-80 with Detroit? From the I-90/I-94 exchange in Gary to I-280 in Toledo, the distance is approximately 206 miles.

EDIT: Originally, the post mentions I-75, but the exit signs there make no mention of Detroit, even though it does go there (instead, they read Toledo/Dayton). And I-90 shares I-80's alignment between these two endpoints.

Not sure how to work with this one. Just since the Turnpike doesn't have exits from I-95 and needs these other roads to get you there, it's almost as if they're designed to be pointed "towards Orlando". I hope that makes some sense.

Not sure if this should ultimately count or not, but I'll toss it out for discussion:

Durham, NC from I-95: 152 miles from I-40* to I-85

*Raleigh is the primary control city for I-40 west from I-95, but Durham appears once, and only once, at the ramp departure from I-95 south to I-40 west (https://www.google.com/maps/@35.3923557,-78.513962,3a,75y,243.48h,87.51t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1suZgxqN3OH51hWj6fZ2x50w!2e0!7i16384!8i8192!5m1!1e1?hl=en) (the previous approach signage just lists Raleigh & Wilmington, with secondary control cities of Durham & Clinton added at the ramp departures).

I measure it to be 279 miles:

AZ Exit 112 (https://goo.gl/maps/jwcQ11QtYydtcMk66) → CA Exit 58 (https://goo.gl/maps/bmTnudPWsw8xdZM27)

Your second link's on CA 60, not I-10.

Aw snap, you're right.  Wrong highway, right exit number.  That makes the correct distance 297 miles to the other Exit 58 (https://goo.gl/maps/N6baNEJ3RLENjRhr7).

Orlando is mentioned on I-75 first at the Florida Turnpike in Wildwood and in Mango, FL for I-4.  Total distance of 65 miles.

Orlando is also mentioned on I-75 at FL 50.

Immokalee is mentioned on I-75 at FL 82 and again at FL 29 at a distance of 58 miles.  Exit 111 is signed for Immokalee Road, so it may not count.

Memphis and I-24. Google says 206 miles

Exit 74A/TN for I-840 West
Exit "44A" /IL (really Exit 0) for I-57 South

As I read the rules closer, I guess "intermediate"  interchanges count, so I need to cut this back to I-24 and I-65 in Downtown Nashville
Makes the distance a little shorter: 178 miles

Exit 46B/TN for I-65 South/To I-40 West
Exit "44A" /IL (really Exit 0) for I-57

Here's one that I thought was kind of silly, because it's either end of a whole Interstate highway.  I-17 mentions Los Angeles along I-10 west and I-40 west.  These are 139 miles apart (and yeah, it's not the exact southern end of I-17, but fairly close.)

That is indeed silly to choose a control city that is 500+ miles away, I mean it's not like in happens in California right?

Well, US 101 stretching from LA to SF for 430 miles, should have two signs for LA right? They do but AFAIK the earliest sign you'll see is in San Jose.

Exit 388C at the I-280/I-680 Junction
Exit 43B (according to Wikipedia) at the CA-23 junction, and Exit 19A at I-405, and Exit 13A at CA-170

That's 369 miles for Los Angeles Sacramento

Edit: Oops missed the part of the post that says "These have to be actual exit signs for towns not located along the freeway" but my answer still works for Sacramento. It's a control city for both I-680 and I-405 despite being at least 80 miles away from US 101

I-40 in Oklahoma mentions Tulsa at Exit 170 (Kickapoo Turnpike) and not again until Exit 240B (US-75), where it is mentioned on supplemental signage. That's a distance of 70 miles. If you count only actual control city signage, Tulsa doesn't appear again until Exit 286 (OK-351 Muskogee Turnpike), a distance of 116 miles.

^ They look legit to me.  OP's own original example did not have "consecutive references".  There are several interchanges along I-70 between his example points.

Another one for the 100+ mile club:  I-90 references St. Paul at both I-35 and I-94...about 161 miles apart.  Minneapolis is not mentioned at I-94.

If we're allowing a divided highway example, then TCH 1 has 487 km (303 miles) between signage for Saskatoon, SK.

If we can include a two-lane highway (am I pushing my luck? :)), then I found an impressive one in Northern Ontario. 1012 km (629 miles) between signage for Cochrane on Highway 17!
1) At its split with Highway 11 in North Bay (https://www.google.ca/maps/@46.3292223,-79.464746,3a,20.3y,303.72h,91.29t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sMIrjvDbG54ocjGcqqflzFw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192)
2) At its west split with Highway 11 in Nipigon (https://www.google.ca/maps/@49.0196989,-88.2371676,3a,17.4y,325.38h,87.11t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1siEr-NpjiFj3Tsf7A1LlgHw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656)

Another decent two-lane example is 402 km (250 miles) between signage for Fort Frances, again on Highway 17.
1) At Highway 71 east of Kenora (https://www.google.ca/maps/@49.7265486,-94.2522899,3a,17.3y,169.68h,91.43t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s1swY7fUgP2Is-H12hXNwAA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192)
2) At Highway 11 in Shabaqua Corners, west of Thunder Bay (https://www.google.ca/maps/@48.6033908,-89.896982,3a,48.8y,224.08h,86.23t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sqQIssOOcg7I8CxYILW9miQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656)

How about I-70 with Cleveland? 117 miles from I-76/PA Turnpike in New Stanton to I-77 in Cambridge. (And then again from I-77 to I-71 in Columbus, but that one's only 79 miles.)

Also, on a related note: I-76 with Columbus, 157 miles from I-70 west in New Stanton to its western terminus at I-71.

For these, I wouldn't call them exits since they have stoplights. It's basically just a right turn.

There should be another post about how far scattered the first mention to the last mention of a specific city is.

On I-84 ( the first and real one, and not the imposter in the west) New York City is used as far west as NY 17 at Middletown, NY to as Far East as CT 15 atEast Hartford, CT.

That is about 122 miles apart approximately.

Looks like I've found a new #2...

On I-80 EB at Exit 123A in South Salt Lake, UT, I-15 South is signed for Las Vegas. The next use of Las Vegas at an interchange is Exit 83 northeast of Fallon, NV, at the US 95 interchange. The Goog indicates this is about 447 miles in the eastbound direction (westbound shorter due to the I-15 overlap

There are two intervening interchanges along I-80 where Las Vegas could reasonably be signed but is not: US 93 in Wells (just signed "East Wells")  and US 93 Alt in West Wendover (signed for "West Wendover" and "Ely").

And if we were going for any distance and not consecutive, it could go further west to Exit 48 East Fernley (where Las Vegas is signed on supplemental signage).

A shorter example would be I-70 in Breezewood, where there is an "exit" signed for Harrisburg.  54 miles away, at Hagerstown, Harrisburg is again signed as a control city for I-81.  Theoretically, you could have another for US-15 in Frederick, making it about 80 miles, but Gettysburg has the control-city honor there.

On I-295 in DE, the US-13 exit used to include a far control city -- Norfolk.  Many folks think I-95 should be routed there, across the Delaware Memorial Bridges and the entirety of the NJTP mainline, since that's the way most through traffic goes anyway.  If it were, there's a US-58 exit signed for Norfolk at Emporia, VA, 275 miles away.
