Title: After Years of Searching...
Post by: Ian on July 23, 2010, 05:20:40 PM
... I finally found a state named interstate shield from the state of New Hampshire. Found it on a wall in an antique store in Wolfeboro, NH, which is also where our family's lake house is. I got this NH I-89 shield for $100 and it was worth it!

OK, I'm gonna go up to Pennsylvania and Imma punch you in the face. :D How many signs is that? Like 20? Dang, haha jk. But congrats. Maybe when I get older and get a job, I'll be able to buy them myself. But that's a real nice sign.

Just out of interest, how many signs like that are offered for sale posing as originals but are in fact fakes? Not that I'm suggesting PennDOTFan's sign is anything but genuine. If they are fetching $100 a time, or possibly more, then there must be crooks out there who are producing phony signs with spray on dirt or even shooting bullet holes through them just to make them look that little bit more authentic. Ebay is full of old shields but from the pictures it would be hard for me to tell a real one from a reproduction.

oh, absolutely.  Route 66 shields are notorious for being faked.  For the most part I can tell the real thing from a reproduction.  It's not worth trying to reproduce a $100 sign because it may cost you $100 just to make the replica and then you've gotta shoot it full of holes.  Now, as for a $6000 sign ...

I know for a fact this sign isn't faked. The lady who sold me this actually used to be married to an NHDOT worker, who used to have this in his collection when he took it down himself.

Plus if it was faked, the person who made it did an excellent job at it. I mean, the pole markings on the back are from older NHDOT hardware  ;-)

For a 15 year old, how long have you been searching?

^^ I've been searching for a number of years. I've been a sign geek for all my life.

People would usually only bother to fake things like US 66, US 666, and US 99 that the general public knows about, I'd think. Profit is unlikely on something like a fake 1957 I-35 Missouri, since the only people liable to care about something like that is usually wise enough to see that it's not legitimate!

I've seen a fake 1957 I-59 Louisiana.  But yes, for the most part, it's all US 66, 99, 101, 666.

I saw that, but I dunno if I am going to take it. $150 is too pricey for me.
