Title: Musical acts named after highway features
Post by: kurumi on July 27, 2010, 07:43:49 PM
Based in Wilton, Conn., the quartet "Exit 43" named themselves after a missing exit on the Merritt Parkway.

"We live in Fairfield County, Connecticut, through which the beautiful Merritt Parkway runs. Curiously, while there are Exits 42 and 44, and both lead to our Unitarian Church, Exit 43 was never built. We chose this imaginary exit for our band name because it is through the imagination that we can begin to build the kind of world we want." (http://exit43.net/music.html)

The VA band Seven Mile Ford explains their name,

QuoteImagine you are on a road trip.
I-81 south, just past the town of Marion, Virginia. The sun is shining, the radio is turned up loud (real loud) and you've got the pedal to the metal.
That is, until you see the flashing blue lights of a state trooper in your rearview mirror. Damn! Now you'll never get to sound check on time.
So close — you were almost there. What does that road sign say up ahead?

I always imagined naming a rock band something like "Reinforced Concrete" or maybe "Standard Lip Gutter".

I think SPUI would be a good name for an electronic dance project.

Highway Gothic could be interesting.

There's a band from the Central Valley named "Motel Drive," after the seedy middle segment of former US 99/Golden State Boulevard in Fresno.

I heard the group "Clearview" sucked -- they tried something that didn't need to be done!

I agree, their rendition of "I Can See Clearly Now" was horrid!

There's a local band around here that took the name "28 North".

I also saw a sticker for a band at the Bloomfield Bridge Tavern with the band name Marianna Prosperity.  Which is the control towns for I-79 exit 23.

I've never seen either of these bands, so I can't vouch for how good they are.
