Title: Within your state, what is the interstate with the most letter-suffixed exits?
Post by: KCRoadFan on September 05, 2022, 12:45:38 PM
I think there may already be a thread about this topic, but I'll create this one regardless.

Anyway, here's what I was thinking: among the interstates in your state, which segment within the state has the most exits with a letter suffix? Of course, it would need to have a lot of closely spaced exits and/or junctions with other interstates or freeways, which will often be cloverleaf interchanges.

As far as Missouri goes, I-70 probably takes the cake because it has plenty of both, what with it being the only interstate that goes through both of the state's major cities of Kansas City and St. Louis, and particularly because of the "Alphabet Loop" in KC.

One thing I should note: for the purposes of this thread, do you think that the "A and B ramps" (or B and C, or whatever two letters make up the pair) of cloverleaf interchanges should be counted as separate exits, or two parts of the same exit? By the former reckoning, I-70 in Missouri has 63 exits with letter suffixes; by the latter, it has 56.

With that in mind, how do other interstates in other states measure up?

Massachusetts only goes as high as the C letter. Examples include

I-90 Exits 134A-B-C

I-95 Exits 35A-B-C

I-495 Exits 89A-B-C

Once I-95 in Rhode Island is fully converted to mileage based exits, there will be Exits 37A-B-C-D and the highest anywhere in New England is Exit 1E on RI 37.

The highest amount of suffixed exits in Massachusetts is along I-95.

Sorry I just saw the thread title.

That doesn't answer my question. I'm wanting to find out the total number of letter-suffixed exits along a given interstate within a state, and see which one has the most such exits. I can't believe you didn't understand what I asked, but I hope this clears it up.

Sorry about that. I misread the title. Anyways, I-95 in Massachusetts has 27 suffixed exits along a 90 mile stretch.

I-64 in Missouri doesn't beat I-70 for the overall count but has a lot relative to its short 40-mile length within the state. I counted 27 of them, which beats I-35's 23 suffixed exits despite the latter going through the KC alphabet loop.

In New York, I-90 has a lot.
57A, 52A, 52W-E, 51W-E, 50A, 48A, 34A, 29A, 25A, that's from the NY Thruway part. Then you have 1N-S, 5A, 6A, I think 9N-S, I might be missing one or two.

For Ohio, it's I-70, with 36 suffixed exits, including 6 in the Dayton/Springfield areas (33A-B, 44A-B, 52A-B), 26 in the Columbus area, (91A-B, 93A-B, 98A-B, 99A-C, 100A-B, 101A-B, 103A-B, 105A-B, 107A-B, 108A-B, 110A-B, 112A-C), and 4 east of Columbus (153A-B, 180A-B).

As for the next 3 highest:

I-77 has 28 suffixed exits with its own exit numbers, with 4 in Cambridge (44A-B, 46A-B), 6 in Canton (104A-B, 107A-B, 109A-B), 8 in the Akron area (122A-B, 123A-B, 125A-B, 137A-B), 10 in the Cleveland area (149A-B, 159A-B, 161A-B, 162A-B, 163A-B). If you count the concurrency with I-76 that uses I-76's exit numbers, it adds 5 more (21A-C, 23A-B), bringing the total up to 33.

I-71 has 27 suffixed exits with its own exit numbers, with 9 in the Cincinnati area (1A-B, 3A-B, 8A-C, 17A-B), 10 in the Columbus area (106A-B, 108A-B, 109A-B, 110A-B, 119A-B), 8 in the Cleveland area (209A-B, 231A-B, 237A-B, 242A-B)). If you count the concurrency with I-70 that uses I-70's exit numbers, it adds 7 more (99A-C, 100A-B, 101A-B), bringing the total up to 34.

I-75 has 27 suffixed exits, including 13 in the Cincinnati area, (1A-G, 2A-B, 10A-B, 16A-B), 6 in the Dayton area (50A-B, 54A-B, 61A-B), 8 in the Toledo area (199A-B, 201A-B, 202A-B, 203A-B)

207A/B in Rogers
29A/B in Brooklyn Park (I-694 exit numbers)

I-84 in CT also has Exit 2 A-B westbound in Danbury: https://goo.gl/maps/atXTu75GrSCc3dZbA

Still, JP's list is thorough

I would assume I-94
234A/B,

And 234C (Cedar Ave)

Quote241A/B/C, 242A/B/C/D, and 246A/B/C in St. Paul

Westbound also has 239A/B (Hamline & Lexington).

So 37 total for I-94.

The "standalone" sections of I-35 have 15.  But if you include I-35E's mileage (as I-35E continue's I-35's milemarkers), I-35E has 23 on its own, which would bring the I-35/35E total to 38.

-----

Meanwhile, we have a grand total of 6 in the entire state of Vermont, and that's only if I include the "Milepost Number" exits on I-89 at I-91.

Utah

15: 257AB, 294ABC, 298AB, 305ABCD (11)
70: 0
80: 115ABC, 123AB (5)
84: 120AB (2)
215: 18AB, 20AB, 22AB (6)

So unsurprisingly, the winner is I-15 but on a per-mile basis 215 blows the four 2dis out of the water.
