I listen to 1, 2, and 3. I can't stand rap and whatnot. I listen to metal with the computer volume at 20, I can't listen to metal/rock at a low volume. It just doesn't work for me.
But what music do y'all like? I know there's an old music thread somewhere, but it wasn't a poll, so... Here. ;)
~Edit~ Haha it's poll not pool.
BigMatt
mainly classic rock, metal, industrial, 50s and 60s rock, punk, new wave ... smidgens of old-school rap on occasion. Various things like Frank Sinatra and Lady Gaga sometimes pop in.
No option for non-rap R&B and jazz, except "other"? :hmmm: :-P
There, I made those two an option. heh heh.
BigMatt
I'll listen to pretty much anything so long as the mood strikes me, although I generally don't do classical or jazz.
Probably the most unusual thing I'm into is video game music.
I selected rap/hip hop. I listen mainly to late 80s/early 90s tunes and if I'm in North America and my rental car has Sirius XM it's tuned into Backspin virtually all the time.

I tend to machine-gun-swap between Boneyard, First Wave, Liquid Metal, and Hair Nation. Despite the lack of traditional advertising, in-between-song jingles somehow manage to be extra infuriating, thus the extremely quick change of stations.
the best part of satellite radio is at night, when they eliminate the DJs and the yakking and the other noise, and just play the damn songs already.

Heck, even some terrestrial radio stations have gone sans DJ overnight. Some don't even bother to use them for the entire broadcast day.

this sounds like an excellent development. Given that song and artist information can be transmitted out-of-band and displayed on a radio's LCD readout, the DJ has become entirely superfluous.
if you want to listen to talk, there is talk radio available everywhere. I for one tune into classic rock to hear classic rock, not some yutz asking if I'd heard the latest about Lindsay Lohan.
What about modern rock? I usually keep my radio on Sirius 21 - Alt Nation (modern rock) and Sirius 24 - Lithium (90's rock).

about the most modern stuff I tend to like is Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains - it is with some dismay that I note that it is officially considered classic rock now.

Stuff from the early 90's is getting on for 20 years now although it seems like only yesterday when it came out. Doesn't time fly :-o
Only select 2!?! OK, I went with the top 2. Here goes for me: classic rock/pop, classic R&B (Motown, Stax), crossover country (stuff that can be rock/pop or country), some classical (Vivaldi comes to mind), zydeco, some modern rock/pop, a bit of other stuff here and there that sounds good.
Where's alternative rock (indie/electronic/grunge/punk/prog)?
I generally listen to alt rock, classic rock, and jazz hip hop.
Classic Rock yes
Metal absolutely
Country very little
Rap/Hip-hop sure
R&B not really
Jazz meh
Most of what I like would fall into that enormous "alternative" category; the alt rock station here in Milwaukee covers it pretty well.
OK, I'm not gonna make 1,000,000 different genres just so that everyone's happy. It's not that hard to select "other" is it? Dang.

I'm into country, rap, R&B, rock, jazz, techno -- anything that gets my feet moving. :-D

D'oh! Post edited. I totally forgot about them :banghead:
I like music with vocalists actually singing, and being played by real instruments (not synthesizers).
Which means no rap, no hip-hop, no electronica...you get the idea.
I'm a rock guy myself- both classic and modern. There's nothing like driving to really loud rock music. :D

For others, it's music performed in French, power ballads, disco. But it's hard to classify Sam Roberts, with his songs like Detroit '67 and Bridge to Nowhere who can span 2 categories

YAY, classic rock leads the poll 2 to 1  :spin:
That's about all I listen to, obviously :). It's not that I havent listen to the other genres, I just havent found anything I like except Classic R&R and some Bluegrass and the Blues. Alot of memories in Classic R&R I guess.
Actually my preference is the more obscure classic R&R, like you hear on Deep Tracks on Sirius/XM sat rad or a good classic R&R fm station, ohhh yay!!! :-D
Here's one of my favorite country artists -- the "Man in Black."

That song is the most epic thing ever... and since I just read that I must now play it.
---
I listen to pop, electronica, alt rock, techno, trance, hip hop, dance, modern rock, whatever. I even have some instrumental tracks in there, as well as movie soundtracks.
I hate classifying music into specific genres, however, because my tastes are so varied. My iPod can easily go from Journey to Lady Gaga to Bullet for my Valentine to David Guetta.

I get a kick out of some slot machine music. Aristocrat machines generally have the best (and the most video-gamey you can get outside of Konami slot machines), though I'm rather partial to the IGT Huge Fucking Win Theme. It gets kind of annoying when the machine starts playing a song you kind of like and the customer cuts it off and keeps playing. Dude, you just won $500, bask in it!
(first person to get me a copy of the Aristocrat hand pay song in the clear gets a regional modship :sombrero:)

Disturbed's first album had a lot of profanity, but subsequent albums not so much ("Liberate" notwithstanding).

Of course, there are some pretty large contributors with no "albums"... Apogee Software, Capcom, Disney Interactive, Inti Creates, Maxis, Nintendo.... you know, the video game music I mentioned before?

I think my tastes are pretty varied:
- rock and R&B from the 1960s on, though primarily 70s music
- late 1950s to mid-1970s jazz, particularly early jazz fusion
- certain types of novelty music (Wesley Willis!!!)
Favorite groups/musicians, a brief list:
Billy Joel
Aimee Mann
Songs: Ohia/Magnolia Electric Co./Jason Molina's solo work
The Isley Brothers
The Who
The Beatles (and in terms of post-breakup solo work, probably Paul McCartney's 1970s output)
Miles Davis
Phil Collins/Genesis
The Bee Gees (particularly the "disco" era band with Blue Weaver on keyboards and Dennis Bryon as their drummer)
Jonatha Brooke
Emily Haines (much more her solo stuff than anything from Metric)

I like how the 14 year old thinks the world only extends to the horizon beyond his bedroom window. :pan:
At least you included Jazz. Gospel, Blues, and Folk (and Jazz) is the foundation of 99.9% of music we hear today. You'd think they could be included on your list.
That said, Classic rock, alternative rock, punk rock, fusion, Funk, Philly Sound, Stax, Southern Soul, Chicago Blues, Delta Blues, Swamp Blues, Outlaw Country, Americana (modern folk)
God if you ask me, I developed my taste from music from actually watching dozens of Time Life music collection infomercials. I am serious. I like everything but Heavy Metal, Rap, and Punk Rock. I know it works, considering I used the Classic Soft Rock one hosted by Air Supply's Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock and turned on a new song for me, "Jessie" by Joshua Kadison (1993). Now I've played it what, 45 times in the last 24 hours. (Dunno how already)
However, I also used those infomercials to expand my music interests. The earliest song I listen to is Hank Williams Sr.'s "Hey Good Looking" from 1951. The newest one is "Hey There Delilah" from the Plain White Ts in 2005.
I spotted some clips of Hayseed Dixie, a Bluegrass band who cover classic rock songs in bluegrass/hillbilly music
Ace of Speed originally from Motorhead
Bohemian Rhapsody originally from Queen
Weird Al Yankovic did a polka version titled "Bohemian Polka"
Walk this way originally from Aerosmith

Me TOO.
1997 infomercials on classic rock and disco led to...me having an appreciation for seventies music that has lasted to this day!
^^ Whoa. I listened to about 1:30 of two of those songs, and I felt like my head was gonna explode! :spin:. That shows to go ya that some people have COMPLETELY different tastes in music. Haha.

I'm probably the odd man out here, but when I drive I like to listen to oldies from the 40's: Glenn Miller, the Astaires, Andrews Sisters, etc. I think this music is perfect when driving on scenic roads especially. There's nothing like driving up the Taconic Parkway or up the Quickway listening to WWII songs as if driving in an old 41 Studebaker. Great stuff. :D

You poor soul. I hope you didn't have credit on it. Those suckers can take up to 10 minutes to reboot depending on which cabinet model it is...
Bally machines also run on Linux (and in fact have the same service menu as WMSes with only a few minor differences). Aristocrats, IGTs and AGSes have proprietary OSes. We have some brand-new Aruze machines but I haven't needed to reboot those yet, so I couldn't say what they're running.

First wave is great. Brings me back to HS and College days. The only time I have used Satelite radio is when it came with a rental car or when i borrowed my sisters Tourag(sp)
I cant justify the expense of sattelite radio for the 15 minute drive to and from work but my sister traveled all around the Southeast in Pharmaceutical sales... Perfect job for a roadgeek but I couldn't be a drug dealer
Mainly Eurodance, Happy Hardcore, Techno, PsyTrance.
Every now and then I also listen to Merengue.
I Like Pop, Rock, Country, & R&B.
I dislike rap, hip-hop, and alternative rock
Time Periods: 1950-today.
The 1980's are my favorite decade. The 1970's is my second favorite decade.
Some of the artists I like:
Pop/Rock:
Eagles
Air Supply
Foreigner
Chicago
Taylor Dayne
Phil Collins
Country:
George Strait
Tanya Tucker
R&B:
Marvin Gaye
Champagne
The oldest music I listen to is Hank Williams. The newest songs I like are "I Like It" by Enrique Inglasias, and "Round & Round" by Selena Gomez.
When I was a small kid in the mid1970s we would drive from whern I grew up in NJ to visit my Moms family in North Florida. We usually drover overnight.. I remember the AM radio. Mix of pop, country and talk all night. I love the mid 70s music. when I was 6 I loved "Afternoon Delight" I had no idea what the sone was about.
This is why I love roads and radio.

Funny :-D
On a similar note, several years ago I heard a little girl singing "My Neck, My Back"(This is a rather nasty song). Her daddy then asked her where she heard that song. She replied; " In the car with you, DUH!" :-D
Here's a link if you're wondering just how nasty it is.

I was 11 when I first heard the song and didn't know what it was about for years later.
I don't know whether that's funny or sad.

You'd probably like Meri Wilson's The Telephone Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UexxG4RntfU) too. Same topic, same era, but funnier.
I picked Metal and Alt-Rock, since the limit was two. I actually like music from lots of different genres, but if I was stranded on a desert island with my selection of, say, 10,000 songs to keep my company, probably 8,000 or so would fall in one of those two catagories.
Small sampling, off the top of my head: Hendrix, Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Radiohead, Green Day, Tool, Weezer, White Stripes, Metallica, Little Feat, Rob Zombie, George Clinton (Funkadelic, Parliament), Muddy Waters, Stevie Wonder, Soundgarden, Pink Floyd, Wolfmother, Metal Church, Nirvana, Sublime, Alice In Chains, et lotsa al.
Let's see, not any females there. Hmmm: Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, The Dixie Chicks, The Faders (at least one song anyway), Heart, Annie Lennox, Aretha Franklin (always wantin' to hear
Freeway Of Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ip_pjb5_fgA) whenever I'm in Atlanta, for some reason), Joni Mitchell, Jonatha Brooke, Rihanna, The Pointer Sisters, and more and more.
Besides Rihanna, a few modern pop/r&b acts I like, mostly in small doses: Cee Lo Green, Nelly and P!nk.

I get a kick out of some slot machine music.
Me too, it's like a guilty pleasure. Pinball music can be fun too. The Pinball Fantasies game from the mid 90s had good music, although it would get old after a while.
I'm mainly into classic rock. I'm a very big fan of the Eagles.
As the O'Jays once said, "I love music, any kind of music!" I like mainly anything from the 1960s-80s, with some early 90s stuff thrown in. I don't like the newer (post-1995) music, though (but my daughter does!), but I've grown accustomed to it, thanks to her asking me to turn it onto a Top-40 (Kiss 106.1 in Seattle) station whenever she tags along. As for myself, I mainly listen to Warm 106.9, which happens to be the same station where Delilah bases her popular nighttime lovesongs show!
If I listen to country, it's gonna be the "newer" outlaw country...Big n Rich, Cowboy Troy (sans 3rd album), Gretchen Wilson, Colt Ford, Jamey Johnson.
It's amazing to me how time has FLOWN by...'90s music is now "classic"...and I like it better now than I did then.
The older blues are awesome...B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, and others.
But overall for me...CLASSIC ROCK RULES!!!!!
