Title: Consecutive Interstate Exits
Post by: CtrlAltDel on March 28, 2023, 12:54:14 PM
I was perusing I-57 in the Champaign area to see how things were going with the construction of the new interchange with I-74 when I noticed that the immediate exit southbound was with another Interstate, I-72. And so, I was wondering where else in the system that this happens. Anyone know of anywhere?

I-90 in Massachusetts with I-84 and I-290/I-395. Also New York with I-90 and I-890, I-88, and I-890 again. Probably more examples with toll roads.

There’s also the Pennsylvania Turnpike with I-76 and I-476 in King of Prussia. Also I-83, and I-283.

Forgot about US 15 between 81 and 83.

I think you mean I-890.

I-90 NY also has another threesome near Rochester with I-490, I-390, and then I-490 again.

Yes, I meant I-890. Surprised that I-90 doesn't have an exit near Scottsville with NY 383 or 386. Seems like one would make sense there.

I-294's got one, I-290 and I-88. Once I-490 is completed, you could argue that's also connected.

I-95 has a three-fer with 3 of its child routes, nicely illustrated by this sign in the middle of the MD 100 interchange (https://www.google.com/maps/@39.1982595,-76.7647623,3a,45y,56.46h,93.64t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1scS3VIB8OrTzfmYU5vcTXgA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192!5m1!1e1): I-895, I-195, & I-695.

I-64 Eastbound near Richmond has 2 right next to each other, with I-195 and I-95. Exit 186 is I-195, exit 187 is I-95. Westbound might count as this, though I-64 is leaving I-95 here. (and I-64 uses I-95's exit numbers)

You know... if we take the OP at literal face value... then the example actually has four consecutive exits to an Interstate.

Two examples of two consecutive on the Ohio Turnpike:
- Exit 64 (I-75) and 71 (I-280)
- Exit 161 (I-71) and 173 (I-77)

- Exit 64 (I-75) and 71 (I-280)
- Exit 161 (I-71) and 173 (I-77)

If you combine the PA Turnpike & Ohio Turnpike - in the Westbound direction only - the last exit in PA is for I-376, and the next exit is for I-680.
* - I'm personally not counting ramps to rest stops / service plazas as "exits"

If you look at it as the Thruway mainline versus just I-90, it expands to 5 in a row: I-890, I-88, I-890, I-87 NB/I-90 EB, and finally I-787.

Colorado almost has one. Southbound on I-25 has Exit 217B (I-270) followed by Exit 216 (I-76 Westbound), but with Exit 217A sandwiched in between for US36 Westbound.

Yes, it's 17 miles, which is quite a ways even by Thruway standards. I believe at one time, an exit was being considered at Union St (an extension of NY 259), but it never went anywhere. I'd also like to see an exit east of I-390 at NY 64, but local opposition from the wealthy suburbs of Pittsford and Mendon would be immense.

And only NY 144 is preventing it from being 7 (including I-87 and I-90 again) via the Berkshire Spur.

Too much local opposition sunk the Union Street exit.

NJTP has Exit 14 (I-78) and 15W (I-280)

CT does on I-84 West in Manchester.  Exit 61 is I-291, and Exit 59 is I-384 (Exit 60 is paired on a C/D road with Exit 62, which comes before the other two ramps.  Only case I can think of in CT, though you almost did on I-91 North with Exit 29 being the de facto exit for I-84 East and Exit 29A for the once proposed I-484

Yet another Land of Lincoln example: I-55 meets I-39's Southern Terminus north of Normal, then the next exit heading SB is I-74 WB, as I-74 EB joins with I-55 SB's mainline for their trip around Bloomington/Normal

I-8: I-805 to I-15.
Admittedly, it's currently a technicality since the first ramp goes to CA 15, and the second to I-15.

Slightly off-topic, but are there any interstate "triangles", where three interstates connect with no intermediate exits on any of the three sides?

Closest I can find is I-65/I-465/I-865 in Indiana. 2/3 of the sides have no exits, but I-465 does have 2 exits.

Denver might qualify, depending on if CO 224 counts as a separate exit or not.

Truth. Was only thinking about one side of the triangle.

In theory, US36 is an extension of I-270 (which is also US36), so it's basically the next exit, just with the opposite direction of the highway ruining it.

In Houston, Interstate 69 south kind of does this. Exit 132 is for IH-10 and while there is an exit for Jackson Street to downtown, if I remember correctly, the ramp for that is actually part of the same general interchange with the ramps for IH-10. The next exit after that is for IH 45.

A couple IL ones,

I-294 SB has I-90 E/W followed by I-190 West
I-294 SB also has I-290 West first, followed by I-290 East and I-88 West. The order may change due to the ongoing roadwork

And as mentioned above, I-88 EB has I-294/York Rd first followed by I-294 North/I-290 West with the mainline heading into I-290 East
