Title: Northeast U.S. Bicycle Route thread
Post by: rushfan01760 on April 03, 2023, 06:38:21 PM
(Road related but for bicycles)
U.S. Bicycle Route (USBR) 7 is now signed in the State of Connecticut.    This is the second USBR signed in New England (USBR 1 is signed in Maine).

Here is a link to a press release from the Adventure Cycling Association (which works with AASHTO to number bicycle routes):

I thought and wish that "BR" was "Business Route".

Went up to the Midcoast region of Maine last weekend.   I noticed that US Bicycle Route 1A was signed (despite the Adventure Cycling Association's insistence that it is not).   There are a couple of signs that are either missing or are in error though.

Last month AASHTO approved a new section of U.S. Bicycle Route 11 in Pennsylvania.  This segment goes through York and Harrisburg and also runs alongside part of the Susquehanna River as well as near the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon.  More details can be found here:  https://www.adventurecycling.org/members/news/three-new-routes-added-to-the-us-bicycle-route-system/ (https://www.adventurecycling.org/members/news/three-new-routes-added-to-the-us-bicycle-route-system/)

The relocation of USBR 1 in Maine between Kennebunk and Scarborough was approved during the 2023 AASHTO Annual meeting last November.  This section of USBR 1 was mostly moved onto the Eastern Trail bike path.

Too bad they're allowing unpaved bike trails to be part of the USBR system. Not that the AASHTO know/care at all about it.

The people who would be most upset - roadies still riding <=25 mm tires, would probably know the paved road alternatives anyway, which there should be plenty of in this part of Maine.

I am a roadie riding bigger tires than that and dirt paths are still a chore. They can be muddy for days on end in poorly maintained sections, have unexpected sand berms that may be too difficult to see until too late (especially along coastal areas), and cause you to expend 5-15% more energy for the same effort. Yeah I know where all the roads are, but the concept of this system was created for touring cyclists, most of all which is done on road bicycles.

Thankfully Massachusetts has told town and cities in the state no state money for unpaved trails. Unfortunately one of the Congress critters here got money for a recent one (in Townsend) that is not paved which doesn't help the problem. I know my state does it for reasons of safety and handicapped safety/accessibility which doesn't apply as much to the USBR but inevitably it will when the state starts adding miles to the USBR.

There was a USBR 7 marker posted on the Ashuwillticook Trail in Pittsfield near Crane Ave
