Now that it's official that Charlotte will be the location of my 2024 "city meet", I'd like to announce the tentative date I'm looking at - Saturday, April 20.
The format for my meet will be the same that I used for my previous gatherings... a choose-your-own-sightseeing event. I will select the restaurants where we will convene for lunch and dinner, and folks can explore certain aspects of Charlotte individually or in small groups between lunch and dinner. Some folks may choose to focus on the highway infrastructure in the area, some may choose to explore the city's downtown area, some may want to check out retail/breweries, and of course some may choose some combination of those and any other features of the city that they are interested in.
Charlotte is a city that's intrigued me for quite a while, and I've never really been there; I only passed through it once on I-77 when I was a kid. As I've said before with other "city meets" I've hosted, I'm basically exploring this city for the first time and invite anyone who is interested to explore it with me.
Over the next few months or so, I will confirm that April 20 will be the date... but right now, I'm giving myself at least a 90 percent chance that it will take place on this date. Certain enough to announce the date now. (It won't surprise me if we have some 420 jokes. LOL)
Hm. Could be tough to swing this and a solar eclipse trip for me that month.
Will keep this in in mind, maybe it won't conflict with the spring Hershey dicast toy show that takes place around this time
I'm in the same boat as Rothman as I am highly prioritizing the eclipse. How I do it is the question. I'm also considering a strong cutback in travel to invest in other things like house repairs and saving (yes I said that word) for retirement.
Between New Orleans in February, the Eclipse in April, and Bakersfield in May, this part of the calendar is already pretty congested. I would have been really interested in this but it's not realistic for me if it's done that time of year. (However, if you supply free weed for us, you might entice me and others to go...)
It's two weekends (12 days) after the eclipse, but for many of us the eclipse is going to be a long weekend or entire week off. I would suggest a date poll as we get closer.
The location is extremely doable for me. I believe it has been over 10 years since I have been to any sort of organized official meet (not counting individual meetups with specific road friends). But April is in the middle of dance competition season for my girls, and if there is a competition that weekend then it will definitely be a no for me. But it's way too early at this point since we don't know the 2024 competition dates yet, so I'll keep it on the radar.
Since I can go in my backyard to see the eclipse and the 20th isn't the same weekend as my Mom's birthday; this is plausible for me.
I'm gonna do my best to attend this, but the eclipse being so close to the April 20th date may deter others from coming.

It's gonna have something else by the time of the meet! I just started seeing one of those paid ads in my Facebook feed that said Charlotte would get a new location of Micro Center early next year. If you've never been to a Micro Center, it puts the old CompUSA chain to shame. Huge selection of computers and parts and accessories.
I could have a side bet going on will Fury 325 be fixed before this meet.

I've had to buy a CPU from a Micro Center in person back in 2014 when the best price was there and they didn't deliver. The one I went to was off the Kennedy in Chicago.
Note to self.
Include a stop at Micro Center during the next Columbus Roadmeet.
P.P.S. Encourage whomever hosts the next Cincy Roadmeet to include a Micro Center stop as well.
I'm not interested in an eclipse trip so I have no problem with the date, but given feedback from many planning to take them I won't plan for this date yet.
Very much depends on my wedding plans, which are a moving target right now. But I'm interested.

I went to the Cincinnati location several years ago once, conveniently located at 275 and Mosteller Rd near I-75. I think I was trying to find a cable of some type of some sort of setup to try to access data on a dying hard drive. I don't think I was able to find it, but they had lots of obscure, outdated stuff that could have possibly done the trick. Overall I was impressed.

Nah, just extra layers of bureaucratic red tape that comes with marrying an immigrant.
It's a huge bummer you're planning this for April because I'd like to see Charlotte but there's no way in hell that I can swing an eclipse trip and a Charlotte trip in the same month.
Would you consider moving it to later in the year?

I could easily do a separate unrelated trip with my parents that includes visiting the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
With the possibility of all these people coming to Charlotte in April, I could use some help coaching my kids' soccer games.
I totally understand that some folks are bummed that they won't be able to attend this meet given how close it is to the eclipse... but at least it's not taking place on, say, the same weekend as the eclipse. In the past, there were multiple occasions when I got pushback for merely suggesting that someone might not want to host their meet on the same date that someone else is hosting a meet. That's not what's happening here (especially since my meet is almost 2 weeks after the eclipse), but the situation seems similar enough.
I know I can't please everyone. Some folks feel the host should simply choose a date without offering potential attendees the option to vote in a poll; some folks prefer that the host create a poll. I've done it both ways. Given some circumstances this year, I just felt that choosing a date that works for me and inviting everyone to join me on that date (if they are able) is best. Depending on what circumstances are like when it's time to start planning my 2025 meet, I might go back to creating a poll for the date; we'll see. I don't necessarily think there's a right or wrong way of doing this; it's whatever works for the person who's hosting.
If you're able to join me, that's awesome! If you're not, that's completely understandable and I'm sorry that you won't be able to make it.

I'm betting the chances of Fury 325 being fixed will be much sooner than this meet...seems B&M and Cedar Fair are moving at a pretty good clip to get this resolved. I'm predicting it'll be back up and running by Labor Day or shortly afterward, just in time for the start of SCarowinds.
Now if an outside event of the meet next year included some time at Carowinds (for those who like theme parks and coasters), that would be cool.

Yep. I feel the same as Alps. You're the host and can have the meet when you want and I wish you all the best with it.
Also, you have quite the potential for a crowd if you changed your mind because the largest contingent of roadgeeks is in the Northeast, and a good amount in NC itself, so Charlotte is close enough to encourage a large number of us/them to participate. Many of us also only attend meets within a smaller geographic distance.
If you were doing Mobile or Wichita this year I wouldn't care that it's 2 weeks from the eclipse because the likelihood of me going to those cities is almost zero.
I suspect a lot of people (including myself) would not have voted for Charlotte in the poll (or voted at all) had we realized that you were planning to host in April 2024. Total eclipses will happen 8 times in the US in the 21st century. I admit that I should have realized your pattern for having them in April each year but didn't.

I'm not necessarily looking to maximize the number of attendees at my event. Honestly, the size of the group does not matter to me. If I have a lot of folks attend, that's great! If I only have a few, that's great too! My goal is to simply invite others to join me in exploring the city and for us to have an enjoyable time doing so; my goal is not to reach a certain number of attendees.
When I created my poll, I was only asking folks for their vote on where I should host my meet next year. I do recognize that some folks may have voted differently if they would have known that I would choose the same month as the eclipse. However, I was trying to keep the poll as simple as possible, and it honestly didn't occur to me that I should have mentioned my intended time frame in 2024. But on the other hand, no one asked about my intended time frame either. If someone had asked the question, I would have gladly answered.
I have no hard feelings for anyone who can't make it. I'm just happy for Laura and others who are traveling to see the eclipse! That's awesome. :)

I would argue that there's more than likely an equally large group of people with no interest in traveling to see the eclipse that can easily access this meet. However, if a large group (I can easily see over 20 people - though Charlotte doesn't have a lot of road goings on compared to 5-10 years ago) will AJ be ok with multiple tables of people?
I know I will be coaching soccer that day - Steve you did offer to be a mascot for the team - or was that someone else?

If the attendance at my previous city meets is any indication (and combining that with the likelihood that some folks won't attend because of how close it is to the eclipse), I'd be very surprised if I have 20 people attend. My guess is that I'll have somewhere between 10 and 15 folks attending, but I could be wrong. At the each of the previous meets I hosted, the entire group was able to sit at the same table together for both lunch and dinner. I'd specifically be looking for a restaurant where that's possible. I don't really want to have the group split up at separate tables because lunch and dinner are the only times when our entire group will be together. That's just the nature of my meets.
Didn't we have separate tables at Providence? Although both tables were right next to each other.

You're probably thinking of the lunch in Providence rather than the dinner. We had a private room at the restaurant where we had lunch. And yes... while we technically may have had separate tables there, it didn't feel like it because there were no other patrons, not part of our group, that were intermingled between our tables. We were all free to roam around between the tables without disturbing other patrons.
At the dinner restaurant in Providence, we were all at the same table.
If either or both of the restaurants I choose in Charlotte have the option for a private room, it wouldn't matter that we are sitting at separate tables because we're all together and confined in a space separate from the rest of the restaurant.

The meet I hosted at Hoss's in April 2018?
I hope everyone is enjoying the fall season. I wanted to provide a quick update on my Charlotte meet.
It's still likely that April 20 will be the date, but I am still saying "tentative" because I'll be starting a new job soon and need to get settled there a bit before I submit my time-off request for the dates I'll need for my trip to and from Charlotte. I figure I will be able to make the date official by the end of 2023.
Hi, everyone! To those of you in the U.S. who celebrated Thanksgiving, I hope you had a great day... and that your travels have been smooth for everyone who has traveled for the holiday.
I am now a few weeks into my new job and was able to firmly establish with my boss that I'll be able to take the days off that I will need for my travels to and from Charlotte in April. That means I was able to remove the "tentative" designation from the date of my meet. April 20 is now the official date! I've booked my lodging for Charlotte and will make some decisions over the next few months as to where lunch and dinner will be located. (For anyone not familiar with the format of my meets, I only organize lunch and dinner and encourage everyone to explore the area individually or in groups between the meals. Choose your own sightseeing!)
More to come over the next few months... but I at least wanted to share this update for anyone who wants to start making any travel arrangements.
Can confirm I'm out for this as I'm planning to have my wedding and honeymoon that weekend.

Please accept my best wishes!
I just created a private event on Facebook and invited my friends whom I think may be interested in attending. If you received an invitation and you see others missing from the invitation who might be interested, please feel free to invite them if you are connected with them on Facebook. (My only request with that is you please invite only those folks whom you think have a reasonable chance at attending.) If you don't receive an invitation on Facebook but are interested in attending, you are of course welcome to join us! Just let me know here if you plan to attend.
Here are the details for the event:
- At 11:00 a.m. ET, we will gather for lunch at Burger 21 which is located at 11331 Costigan Lane, Charlotte, NC 28277.
- Because my "city meet" format is a choose-your-own-sightseeing format, everyone is encouraged to go off on their own and explore the Charlotte area individually or in groups throughout the afternoon... whatever you'd prefer to do. Burger 21 is located near a free parking garage where folks who want to carpool with others can leave their cars.
- At 7:00 p.m. ET, we will gather for dinner at Old McKoy's Smokehouse and Saloon which is located at 4630 Old Pineville Road, Charlotte, NC 28217.
Of course, if you are only able to attend lunch or dinner but not both, that is totally fine. Just let me know your plans when you are able. At this point, I had to make a guess as to how many attendees I expect to have. I guessed 15 (and used that number when I made the dinner reservation for McKoy's), but of course the actual number could be lower or higher than that. As an FYI, the restaurant will be able to split the checks for our group.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone in Charlotte for my fourth "city meet"!
Ooh, damn. If this was happening on that date a year ago it would have been a definite yes. Unfortunately I've since moved about an hour and a half away (used to live in Kannapolis, now living in the Hickory-Lenoir area) due to IRL circumstances and my attendance is doubtful at best due to that. Best wishes to the attendees (and the non-attendees, in Takumi's case! Congrats!).
Edit: Lenoir, not Durham. Silly me.
I'm interested. I wish I could find a traveling companion. I'm in Atlanta, and if the weather is nice I'd like to head up via US 25, I-26, and US 74 since I've never been that way before and I-26 looks pretty spectacular.

Depends on what one considers 'Long Distance.'
For me the longest distance I ever drove one way for a road meet was the 2015 Golden CO\ Denver area road meet, that took me a day and a half to get there, that is definitely long distance for me. I don't count the meets in the mid Atlantic long distance since alot of times I'm staying in central PA with family when I attend those meets

More to the point, it's whether the meets are far enough apart that meet planners shouldn't worry about the schedule conflict. A three-time zone distance usually means not a lot of overlap for potential attendees, except "national" meets which have a wider draw.
I've been wondering about the designation of a "national meet." What meet doesn't have a potentially national draw?

That's a question I've asked before too. Any road meet could potentially attract anyone from any part of the country.

It's up to the meet organizer whether to call it "national". But if the organizer doesn't have the experience to make a large meet run smoothly, expect the organizer to draw ridicule, or at least fewer RSVPs than expected. Same if the proposed "national meet" is at an inconvenient location, or a bad time (including the December holidays, and the June wedding season), or the same year as an already-scheduled "national meet".
I don't recall this ever being a problem. Some meets didn't work well, but those IIRC weren't billed as "national".
My parents were married in June, but I don't know if I've ever been to a June wedding.
The term "National Meet" dates back to the mid-2000s when road meets were still in their relative infancy. The term was invented in order to describe large-scale events in large markets that were intended to have broader appeal among the road enthusiast populace. These meets were also more rare overall, happening every other year or so in the olde days.
Over the years, meets have become more popular in general, however it remains true that there is a spectrum when it comes to location, size, and intent with these things. (And let's face it: not all meets are hosted by folks capable of pulling off these kinds of large-scale events.) I still think it's important for there to be something that comes along every so often that appeals to the broader community and highlights the community as whole. Your typical road meet in location 'X' is more local/regional in nature in terms of who attends and typically does not accomplish the goal of nation-wise appeal. (Not that there's anything wrong with that - that's just the way it is.)
I was very happy to bring back this format to the community in 2022 and 2024. Your experience may vary, but I like to think that they were both pretty darn good. I look forward to seeing another one of these appear on the calendar some day in the future.
Eh, may there be more national meets, then.

I went to the 2008 Chicago meet, which extended into NW Indiana and SE Wisconsin. That was at least two days. But I don't remember if that was billed as "national", and it predates AARoads so I can't look it up on this forum.
I want to say that all National meets have been multi-day (though I'm not sure on Pittsburgh) but that the reverse isn't true.

It would be great if you are able to join us for dinner!
Looks like this will be my 3rd road meet of the year and Steph's first road meet of the year :) Yes we are both going to attend, Just booked our lodging in Hickory, NC for that weekend, looking forward to it!
We're down to only a little over two weeks until the big day! At this point, I'm expecting a fairly large group for lunch and dinner. If you're still considering attending but haven't decided yet, I am aiming to have an accurate headcount (or as close to an accurate of a headcount as possible) no later than Wednesday, April 17. Please let me know here or respond in the Facebook event if you received an invitation there.
Thanks! I'm looking forward to seeing everyone in Charlotte in a couple weeks. :colorful:
The big day is only a week away! At this point I am expecting 20 attendees, including myself... so a decent crowd. An early look at Charlotte's weather forecast for next Saturday suggests that it will be quite a pleasant day.
If you are planning to attend but haven't notified me yet here or via the Facebook event, please let me know as soon as possible so I can include you in the headcount for lunch and/or dinner. I look forward to seeing everyone next Saturday!
Thanks so much to everyone who joined us in Charlotte yesterday! It was so great to see all of you. I hope you all had as much fun as I did. :colorful: I will say that I'm very much looking forward to doing this again next year in a different city!
Safe travels on your journeys home!!
I'm glad everybody had fun! I definitely would have liked to see everyone, but on Friday I had just finally gotten home from a work assignment in St. Louis that went two weeks longer than originally planned. Been trying to play catch-up on the honey-do list ever since. For that matter, I'm trying to catch up on it every weekend while I'm at home. It's just so hard for me to be able to make it to road meets anymore, especially when your family seemingly has little to no interest, or has other more expensive interests that take precedence.
Anyway, hoping other meets take place in this part of the country in the future. Hopefully I'll actually be able to attend one soon!
Thanks for putting it together AJ. I honestly had a good time and it was nice to see everyone. I'm glad everyone had a good time even with the weather and an unexpected last minute visitor in town tying up traffic. That's not something you can plan for.
Steph and I made it back fine to our house yesterday evening. Thanks A.J. for a fun and first for Stepph and I city meet, we got to explore some of the by-ways of nearby SC and even had a little bit of storm chasing thrown in for us too
