I was trying to categorize my travels into two categories: Interstates I have driven and interstates I have not driven, but I have intersected, so that it would leave me with interstates I have never even come close to being on. I realized the closest 2di to me that I haven't driven a single foot on, or even intersected it is I-22. I have been through Memphis and Birmingham but am always on I-40 or I-20 respectively so I have never intersected it.
You can also list 3dis. For me it might be the Jackson, MS I-220. I have intersected it but have never driven it.
2di:I-57
3di: I-535
I-79 Been thru Charleston WV but went on I-64 to the West Virginia Turnpike.
SM-G996U
2di: I-78
3di: I-190 (MA)
I-185/I-385 SC
I-440
2di: I-86*
3di: I-587 (NY) or a near tie between I-195 (RI/MA) and I-890 (NY)**
* I was on the old I-86 that is now I-84 when it was signed as such. I have also been on sections of NY 17 that are signed for future I-86 and also a section that has signs that have been uncovered. The next closest would be I-99.
** I have passed through the traffic circle where I-587 ends but have never been on the NY 28 mainline section. I-195 or I-890 would otherwise be the closest.

That thread strikes me as a little different because it says "closest stretch of road you have not clinched," which I would interpret as meaning you can have been on some part of the road but you're missing a segment (and for that reason I noted one of the spurs to Maryland's I-895 as my answer for Interstates). This thread, in contrast, asks for an Interstate on which you have not travelled at all as to any segment.
Answering that latter question, then:
2di: Either the western portion of I-74 or I-89 (they're just about the same distance from where I live at their closest points). I-96 is slightly further away at its closest point than either of those.
3di: Maryland's I-795.
One note: For 2di purposes, I'm counting all of North Carolina's I-74 as a single Interstate (that is separate from the western I-74) even though it's in separate pieces. If you consider it three separate 2dis, then the segment Travel Mapping calls "I-74Pem" (I-74 Pembroke)–the part that interchanges with I-95–would be my answer. Similarly, if you consider the western and eastern I-74s to be one single 2di, then I-89 becomes my answer. I don't consider them a single 2di because the chances of their linking up in my lifetime seem nonexistent, whereas the chances of North Carolina connecting its portions to each other seems more plausible.

Well, yes. "Similar" would be a synonym of "a little different." :D
Going with my current suburban Chicago location, the closest interstates I've never been on are:
2di: I-77, although I have crossed it.
3di: I-196.
This was actually a lot of fun to figure out!
As far as 2dis go:
East-West:
96: no, 94: yes, 90: yes, 88: yes, 86: yes, 84: yes (East), 82: no, 80: yes, 78: yes, 76: yes, 74: yes (barely), 70: yes, 68: yes, 66: yes, 64: yes, 44: no, 40: yes
North-South:
99: yes, 97: yes, 95: yes, 93: yes, 91: yes, 89: yes, 87: yes, 85: yes, 83: yes, 81: yes, 79: yes, 77: yes, 75: yes, 73: yes, 71: no, 69: yes, 65: yes
By my calculations, this leaves I-71 as the nearest 2di to my home in State College, at about 204 miles. And from my place in Pittsburgh, it's also I-71, but much less excusable, at 110 miles.
If we allow 3dis into the conversation - I've been on every Interstate that serves Pennsylvania aside from I-176, I-276, I-380, and I-676; of these, I-176 is the closest to State College, at 108 miles. But that doesn't take the cake. Instead, that honor goes to I-795 outside of Baltimore, which is just 105 miles away.
From Pittsburgh, the closest 3di I haven't driven is I-680, in Youngstown, Ohio, at around 52 miles.
The closest for me is I-14 in Temple, Texas. Considering that it was "constructed" in 2017, it also happens to be the newest Interstate that I haven't been on. I just haven't driven that far south yet because of Coved (2020-2021), high gas prices (2022), and adult caregiver (2022-present) putting any possible multi-day road trips on a permanent hold.
3di: I-185 in the Greenville, SC area. ~325 mi
I-385 and I-381 are both similarly close, but also untraveled (add 2-3 miles to above)
2di: I-19 ~1800 mi.

True, but more often than not on this forum, when someone links an earlier thread like that the message (whether express or implied) is "we've already done this one," and I therefore construed your post in that way.
I-194 in North Dakota, but in a couple weeks it will change to I-180 in Illinois.
Two-digit, probably I-44.
2di - I-68
3di - I-189
I-391 in Springfield Mass., which is only like 40 miles away
2di: I-22? Correction: I-78
I can't recall if I was on I-72 or I-74, but it's likely that I was, at least on a short section of each. If not, those would be closer.
3di: I don't recall if I've ever been on I-271 in Cleveland area. Else, I-277 in Akron.

I-391 isn't in Springfield (so saith this former local). [emoji14] :D
I've traveled at least some segment of all 2dis.*
The closest completely untraveled 3di looks to be I-478, the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel (which was also my closest untraveled segment of any Interstate when I just updated the thread on that topic). I'm also missing all of I-878 near JFK. I don't believe either of those is signed. To get a signed 3di that I'm missing, I think we need to go down into Maryland, where I've never been on I-795. That looks to be about 370 miles from home.
*Edit: Since some are making this distinction, I'll point out that my travels on I-11, I-22, and the southern I-87 were before they were signed as those routes but on the same pavement, best I can tell.
Closest 2di never travelled: probably I-12
Closest never driven an independent segment of: I-44
Closest 3di never travelled: I-155 (IL)
Closest 3di segment unclinched: I-294 north of I-90
For 2dis, my answer is I-14. My answer for 3dis is I-635, though I have intersected it.
2di: The western I-86 in Idaho. Clinched in October. Now I-22?
3di: Most likely I-110 in El Paso.
2di: I-12
3di: NC I-285
For me:
2di:
I've never been on I-42, but I don't believe I-42 has been signed yet. (I've also never been on unsigned A1, A2, A4, PRI1, PRI2 or PRI3)
I have been on the southern I-87, before it was I-87 (and the same is true for I-41, I-49, and if you count it separately the Texas I-69).
The closest currently-signed 2di I have never been on is I-14. (I've also never been on I-2, I-11, I-17, I-19, I-35W in Texas, I-69E/C/W, I-82, western I-84, or western I-86)
The closest 3di I have never been on is I-890 in New York (~120 miles away)
For highways I've never driven personally:
2di: I-89 (110 miles away)
3di: I-295, RI/MA (30 miles)
For highways I've never been on, period:
2di: I-78 (174 miles)
3di: I-384, CT (81 miles)
I'm assuming I had been on I-89 as a small child as I had gone to Vermont with my family a few times, but it was (slightly) too early for me to be paying attention to which roads I was on.

How can you have been on a route before it existed?
Closest 2DIs: I-99 and I-22
Closest 3DIs: I-575 Georgia, I-180 Pennsylvania and I-165 Kentucky
Here's how they stack up:
- I-99 (355 miles)
- I-575 (365 miles)
- I-180 (460 miles)
- I-22 (520 miles)
- I-165 (540 miles)
For the record, I had driven US-220 between Bedford and Bellefonte, including some stretches of freeway that eventually became I-99. I had intersected all of the others.
I-575 at the south end of Ball Ground is the only one that the closest mileage is not at an endpoint (but that is VERY VERY close to the endpoint).
The closest undriven 2DI to me might be Interstate 44 (280 miles away); I say "might" because I went to Grant's Farm with my family a few years ago on a day trip, and the fastest way from downtown to there like we did is I-44, so it's likely we drove it and I forgot. This was like, 10 years ago, before I-44 even reached the arch.
The second closest, therefore, is Interstate 71, in Louisville, about 290 miles away, which is probably of interest given the circumstances of I-44.
The closest undriven 3DI to me is I-180, the useless one, in Illinois, about 90 miles west of home.
The irony is that I've seen at least one terminus of all three of these interstates. I've driven by the terminus of Interstate 180 at least a dozen times, even on day trips to Iowa. I just never had a reason to use it.
2DI: I-19 in Tucson (approx. 420 miles)
3DI: I-215 in Las Vegas (approx. 217 miles)
2DI: I-87 NC (284 miles)
3DI: I-370 MD (58 miles)
2di: I-86 (908 miles) Pocatello, ID
3di: I-410 (782 miles) outside of San Antonio, TX
2di: I-96 (~235 miles from Cincinnati)
3di: I-264 (~85 miles)
3di winner, pretty sure is I-155 MO/TN ~108mi, tho maybe have driven that for 1 exit in TN. Otherwise, I-840/TN is the winner at ~165mi
2di winner has to be I-22 ~200mi; not much personal utility for a Memphis-Birmingham Interstate route when I live due north of it and have I-57/I-55 to go SW and I-24 to go SE
While I don't keep tabs on my Interstate travels...
Probably I-88 for me, slightly less than 200 miles away in NY.
The next 2di closest to me that I haven't travelled...quite possibly I-88, about 675 miles away in IL.
From home base in Maryland, distance approximated as the crow flies:
2di: I-86 (eastern), ~240 miles
3di: I-676 (PA/NJ), ~110 miles
2 di - I-43, Wisconsin.
3 di - I-375, Detroit.
2di: I-88, ~170 miles
3di: I-680 in Omaha, ~120 miles

Same way that I picked up a clinch of the new I-880 in Iowa when it was renumbered from I-680. I was on the road between I-29 and I-80 east when it was still 680; there's no need for me to re-clinch it just because its number changed.

I guess that it may depend on your Travel Mapping goals - are you clinching "numbers", or are you clinching "stretches of asphalt"? IMHO either way is fine. Depends how you treat any routes that are re-numbered or re-routed.

No, clinching routes is the only acceptable approach. This is the Way.
I live near San Diego, and the closest Interstate I haven't been on is I-380 in San Bruno, which is less than two miles long and more than 450 miles away. After that, I think it's probably I-215 around Salt Lake City, over 630 miles away.

Agreed. I say I haven't been on Interstate 11 even though I have driven it but it was 2015 (minus the Boulder City Bypass that wasn't complete). I will have to return to clinch I-11.
I never counted I-14 to my tally until I drove it, despite having driven that stretch of US-190 so many times I lost count. Now I have driven I-14 so many times I have lost count.
For 2DI, it's likely I-49 for N-S interstates and I-44 for E-W interstates. It's possible I-96 is closer in straight line distance.
For 3DI, I assume it's I-535, with I-172 ready to take over that title when (and if) I go to Duluth in August.
3DI- probably I-393
2DI- I-86
2 DI - I-86 in Idaho. Though I have been at either end travelling on both I-84 and i-15.
3DI - I-380 in San Mateo County. Though I have crossed I-380's path by travelling on both US 101 and I-280.
This is a lot less interesting if you don't tell us where you are to begin with.

Heh. The level of pedantry on this board never fails to amuse.
Probably a couple of 3dis in the Bronx or Queens for me. As far as 2dis, I'd have to think really hard and pull out the atlas or something.
The ones I came up with are closer by than what I was expecting:
2di: I-85
3di: I-195 (VA)

In that case I-75 is the only 2di that I've crossed without ever going on.
I've been on I-182 (~300 mi) and I-105 (~440 mi) many many times as a kid (I've lived in Eugene, Springfield, Pasco, and West Richland), but I've never driven on them myself as an adult, so I don't count them driven on Travel Mapping.
I've never been on I-115 in MT at all, ~420 miles away, so that's the closest interstate I've truly never been on.

There's a stretch of a 3di in Connecticut that most of its residents including myself have never been on: I-684, which is mostly in NY with just a tiny stretch grazing a corner of Greenwich. Probably no reason anyone going from any place in CT to anywhere else would use it.
Closest 2di for me is I-87.
I was heavily into travel in the 1990s, not so much since after I got married. Some highways have appeared since then.
My 2di answer at that time would have been I-16 in Georgia. But since then I-73 has appeared in NC and that would be my answer now.
3-di - never been a big fan of driving many of these since they are usually very short and one has to be careful at the termini especially if you are terminating in the middle of a big city. But some have been very useful to me (I-276, I-476, I-287, I-684, I-180 and I-380 (latter 2 in PA)). Since I am in DC now I am certain my 3-di answer is I-195 in Richmond.

Huh. Makes me wonder how it has been missed on Travel Mapping.
2di: I-12
3di: I-165 (AL)
3DI's would Be I-430 and I-630 in Little Rock.
I-24 would seem to be it, but I MAY have been on a concurrency in Nashville.
Other than that probably I-26. I-57.
I have never technically been on I-76, but I was on I-80S before the numbering was changed.

If what I am reading online is accurate, both the eastern and western I-76 were I-80S in the past.
I was already aware of the eastern I-76 being that way with that change occurring in 1964, as I am in that part of the country, but I didn't know western I-76 was also that way (in the 70s??)
Which one do you mean?

Same, same, and same.
2-di: I-14
3-di: I-635, but have intersected it.

The Denver to Nebraska {US-6} one. I really didn't realize there were two disparate segments like this. I have crossed the Walt Whitman Bridge so I have evidently been on the eastern segment.

Sounds like it's just a designation by MDOT rather than recognized by FHWA as part of the Interstate Highway System.

2di uncrossed: I-49 (~559 mi)
3di: I-180 WY (~40 mi)

My answer, as a Québecer who never went to the US, is probably I-95.
2di: I-43
3di: Until about a month ago, my answer would have been I-235 (The one in Iowa). Now my answer is a bit more complicated. From home, the closest 3di I haven't been on is I-474, with I-172 in a very close second. From school, the closest 3di I haven't been on is I-129.
Also, I-395 in Maine.

Seems to me for most in the province of Québec who never crossed the border it would be I-87, 89, or 91.
2di: I-89 (was going to say I-90 until I realized I have been on the portion east of the I-93 interchange)
3di: I-395 (MA/CT) (I have been on 290 though) or I-291 (CT)
Yes, I have been on portions of all of the major interstates in RI, MA, and CT (84 and 91 were CT only)
I-68
2di: I-68, 340 miles by road (but only 240 as the crow flies, thanks northern PA)
3di: I-890, 205 miles by road
Close call for me...
Overall: I-878 just beats I-478 (I rarely drive in NYC)
2-digit: I-87 in North Carolina beats I-73, but that's fairly close, too
Somehow I've never been on I-84.

For 2DI, it's likely I-49 for N-S interstates and I-44 for E-W interstates. It's possible I-96 is closer in straight line distance.
For 3DI, I assume it's I-535, with I-172 ready to take over that title when (and if) I go to Duluth in August.
I should update this and give an explanation. For 2di's, the N-S interstate remains I-49. As for the closest E-W interstate, I was not on I-44 as signed in 2006, the year I was last in St. Louis, but I have been on the parts of the current I-44 which used to be I-70 and I-55 before the Stan Musial Bridge was built. If it counts that I have been on I-44, then I assume it's I-96.
For 3di's, I made it to Duluth and, in spite of the current construction there, made it onto I-535, so now it's officially I-172.
Having driven I-380 in California and part of I-215 in Utah since my last post, the closest one to my home near San Diego is now I-86 in Idaho, 922 miles away. The closest portion of an Interstate I haven't been on is still I-215 in Utah, 746 miles away. I expect to clinch both of these this summer.
I-82. Neither been on it nor intersected it.
Limited to 3di's, it's similarly I-182.
I-169 (KY) is probably the closest one I have not been on any part of.
For 2dis only, it'd be I-44 for the closest that I ain't been on.
I-255 (IL) is the closest 3di I've never touched, and as for 2di, I-74 is the closest one I've never even gotten close to.

Overall: I-280 (OH): 92 miles
2di: I-43 & I-41: 188 miles

3di: I-395 (VA/DC)
2di: I-99 (PA/NY)

2di: I-86(w)
3di: I-215 (Utah)
Somehow never answered this one:
3 digit: I-391 (I think)
2 digit: I-99
I-37 would be my closest guess.
Probably I-19. I've been on: 5, 15, 17, 25 at various points in my life. But I don't recall ever driving on any part of 19. Been on: 8, 10, 40, 80, 84, 86, 90. I've never been on I-82, but it would be farther away from me than I-19.
I'm probably one of few people on this forum whose first interstate clinch was I-19.
I am in DFW. I have not been on I-369, in Texarkana. After that, its probably I-69 in the Houston metro
From my North Georgia location: I-12 for 2di, I-140 TN for 3di
From my Central Illinois location: I-88 for 2di, I-155 IL for 3di
Edit - I've never been on either I-88 but obviously the one in IL is closer to my home in IL.
Edited for today:

I want to say right now that it is I-481 in NY or I-291 in CT. Probably the former for another year or two.
I-291 and I-391 in the Springfield, MA, area for me.
I-878 in Queens for unsigned routes.
Either I-88 (IL) or I-280 (IL/IA)
I-86 in Idaho.
I-380 in Iowa and l-55
Quote from: ZLoth on July 17, 2023, 12:10:34 PMThe closest for me is I-14 in Temple, Texas.
Still Interstate 14. Still the same reasons.
Due to my reluctance to drive in New York City, I haven't driven any of the x78s and x95s that don't enter New Jersey. But as a passenger, probably something near Baltimore, I-70 is my best guess or maybe I-895.

Dallas to Copperas Cove is two and a half hours. Why would you need to make a multi-day trip out of that?

As a adult caregiver, it's hard to leave my mother alone for more than a few hours. Can I make it in a single day? Yes, but I had plans for multi-day road trips to explore my new home state.
If I count interstates I've intersected, that's a dang wide net to cast. I definitely have never been on I-2 though.
