Title: Palindromic street names in your area?
Post by: KCRoadFan on August 25, 2023, 08:59:25 AM
In the Kansas City metro area, where I live, Renner Boulevard is a major thoroughfare in the Kansas suburbs of Shawnee and Lenexa - and, as you can see, its name is a palindrome - that is, it reads the same forwards and backwards.

What about you - do you have any palindromic street names in or near the city or town where you live? If so, what are they? (Obviously, this refers to just the main component of the street name, not including any prefixes or suffixes. Also, numbered streets, as well as single-letter street names, such as "A Street" , are not allowed for the purposes of this question - that would practically be cheating.)

Not what you're looking for, but Google Maps shows a "Palindrome Lane" in Silver Spring, Maryland, although Google Street View makes it look more like a private driveway serving two or three houses.

There is a Renner Road in Richardson, north of Dallas.  It's name came from a town called Renner, which was north of Dallas.  The city of Dallas annexed Renner in 1978.

Sounds like that might have been done on purpose.

It's a bit disappointing that there is no Harrah Street in either Reno or the Lake Tahoe area.  Bill Harrah founded his business in Reno, and built his first big casino resort at Stateline.

I do see that the main street of Harrah, WA (near Yakima) is Harrah Road, and there are some other Harrah St./Rd./Ave. around as well.

You would think Speedway, IN, would have one, but it does not.

Also came up with Race Car Ln, Moncks Corner, SC; Race Car Dr, Bradley, ME; Race Car Dr, Three Springs, PA; Race Car Alley, Bonifay, FL; none are near tracks, tho

"Race car"  is a favorite palindrome of mine

There's a short street near me called "Kivik Avenue." To this day I have no idea if it's pronounced "KIV-IK" or "CIVIC."

Sometimes "K" is pronounced like "C," especially if they are into the "artsy" spellings of words, akin to "celador" or something like that.

You mean K sometimes is pronounced like a soft C or S?

My bet's that it's kiv-ik.

Yeah, sometimes. I've seen a few "poetic" spellings of words and using letters so they are supposed to sound like others. Not too many in my neighborhood but I've seen them elsewhere. Which is why I thought it could have been pronounced "civic" although I doubt it is.

I was half-expecting a former dirt short track, but the Moncks Corners example is alongside of a go-kart track (https://www.google.com/maps/@33.1174044,-80.0695614,206m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu).

In Montville, CT there's Oxoboxo Brook and Oxoboxo Lake, with the nearby Oxoboxo Rd, Oxoboxo Cross Rd, and Oxoboxo Dam Rd being named after those water features.  According to wikipedia, the name is derived from Algonquian languages of the area.

Gee, if it's in all caps, OXOBOXO, it has vertical symmetry too.
