Title: Center-aligned text on mileage signs
Post by: KCRoadFan on October 08, 2023, 12:56:47 AM
This mileage sign (https://www.google.com/maps/@38.1142223,-102.7429513,3a,75y,277.83h,87.86t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sUbLGSu9mUbgeMaOxxfA-7Q!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu), on US 50 in Colorado west of Lamar, is a rather unusual one in that - unlike the vast majority of such signs, on which the town names are left-aligned and the distances are right-aligned - all the elements on this sign, both town names and mileage figures, are center-aligned.

Throughout the country, where else have you seen mileage signs with center-aligned text, like on the one in the linked Street View picture? I remember having seen such a sign once on US 20 in New York State.

They were somewhat common in certain regions of NYSDOT back in the late '80s and early '90s.  "Replaced in kind" has perpetuated the practice in some places.

US 421 North going out of Boone features some destination signs with center alignment that are a bit crudely put together.

Center-aligned mileage sign:

https://www.google.com/maps/@36.2517521,-81.7709297,3a,15y,185.9h,88.3t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s40jctOUQNDn06gHLes6quA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu

Partial center alignment on destination/guide sign, not what you're precisely looking for but I thought it to be partially fitting:

https://www.google.com/maps/@36.255924,-81.7701304,3a,75y,253.85h,89.15t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sHOz-ogA5B8SW-W2_baEkPQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu

https://www.google.com/maps/@36.2526439,-81.7712008,3a,32y,28.21h,91.12t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sNfAJiJWufA72hsDchzaMLA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu

And of course, it being NCDOT, the control cities for this stretch are a bit sucky. Boone and Wilkesboro are consistent, Blowing Rock is mentioned exactly once, and they can't seem to make their mind up on whether they want to use Hampton or Elizabethton as a control city when approaching Vilas.

For a brief period during the mid-70s; several MA paddle signs featured center-aligned text with mileage listings.

The image dates 2022 but that sign has to be from pre-2004. That's when you started to see mixed-case LGS signs on off-interstate roads.

Wisconsin loves to do that for county highways.

I suppose it helps differentiate it from a 1 better.
