Title: Roadgeek home decor
Post by: nyratk1 on September 09, 2010, 05:21:51 PM
Anybody else here decorate their room with guide signs, traffic lights and other items of roadgeekery? Here's my room:

My apartment's living room has the following signs up, plus a few more not yet online:

That's mindbogglingly beautiful - my collection save for the speed limit sign is only a few months old but it'll grow with time.

There's some people (they probably post here as well) with some amazing displays on Youtube - especially the guy with the no dumping, hazardous waste prohibited and no soliciting signs in his bathroom.  :-o

sure, but they're not my signs so I fail to see how you'd benefit!  :-D

the diamond stop sign is an Auto Club of Southern California item from 1915-1923 or so.

I have a few signs, but not many on the walls. When I was a kid I had a roadsign bed spread. I don't think I have any photos of it :(

These 3M strips are amazing.

I got most of my stuff up on the walls. When I move out it is going to be a pain.

How the hell do you guys get those signs?  I personally wouldn't want to clutter my room with shields, but having one or two would be cool.

eBay, antique stores, yard sales, Craigslist and for the new ones I got - various sign manufacturers

The button copy ceiling is awesome - ceiling needs to be painted green though ;)

I asked the people at MaineDOT, and they didn't know. They said it could have been for a never built suffixed route for US 202 (more than likely), or it could have been a sign for NH 202A in New Hampshire. The "A" is under "202" because there wouldn't be enough room for all 4 digits on one line.

I like the ceiling button copy BGS too, Anyways here's some of my signs that I'm using as wall art:

The speed limit sign already had a number painted over before I got it, anyone know how to get paint off the sheeting?  :ded:

This one is just hiding one of those plastic set of drawers from view and I guess the upside down streetlamp also counts as road decor  :sombrero:

Since you have both an I-68 & MD-68 hanging up, I think you need to find a way to get the BGS that alerts motorists to the difference between the two.

Also, in the pic that should be right above my post, There is a company with a lot across the street from me, who apparently was contracted by the city (Pittsburgh) to replace a bunch of "old" light heads (probably not the correct term) with new LED ones... I only bring it up cause just this morning I couldn't sleep in because they were moving the pile of old ones from one place to another, and it was LOUD. /rant

Wow those rooms are so awesome. Unfortunately, European road authorities almost never post trailblazers, which means virtually all road numbers are just integrated on the signs... so no rooms full of road numbers for European road enthusiasts...

This is interesting.  I found this big plot of the Lake Parkway in Milwaukee at my work and gave it a new home over my bed.  This only covers the original stretch of the Lake Parkway from the southern terminus of I-794 to Layton Ave.

I... am not a decorator. Three walls of my room are covered in nothing except blueish white paint, the fourth is covered in fox hunting wallpaper which was there when we moved in that in 14 years I never bothered to remove. The only exception to any of this is a single, fake, scaled down (12" x 12" diagonal) "Road Construction Ahead" sign that I got as a christmas present years ago:
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg199.imageshack.us%2Fimg199%2F3835%2Fdscn7771b.jpg&hash=dfd065405d08c18ee3536e7d96874bd715cee25d)

Although, there is my dresser which we spraypainted when I was about six years old:
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg840.imageshack.us%2Fimg840%2F1079%2Fdscn7773.jpg&hash=817b4a45f09063367f128b0702705dca121e53fe)

Colors chosen for obvious reason.  ;-)

My walls are covered with signs and maps. Almost all of my signs are city owned roads :/. But here's the pictures anyway;
My entire collection:
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh4.ggpht.com%2F_WYYeXvkUoUE%2FSlExCevxgWI%2FAAAAAAAABqI%2F7ORJWPRIBDQ%2Fs800%2F027.JPG&hash=36ed2788d2978aa93a6602b3c5f070cd90a7292d)
Walls. (I made that shield a LONG time ago, I didn't put "TEXAS" in the correct spot. ) :
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh4.ggpht.com%2F_WYYeXvkUoUE%2FSlExDm2MYgI%2FAAAAAAAABqM%2Fm0ZaJj9N-Zs%2Fs800%2F028.JPG&hash=645fb140a23e1b0cc8b6daa3a02740b8de68eecd)
My wall, there was supposed to be an entire theme for that corner. But that never happened, and we've never gotten around to painting over it.:
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh6.ggpht.com%2F_WYYeXvkUoUE%2FSlExEpz6Z1I%2FAAAAAAAABqQ%2F5zZXLxtYu9Y%2Fs800%2F029.JPG&hash=e11def012cef9e1d3937e403431a31e505bffe96)
My closet door:
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh6.ggpht.com%2F_WYYeXvkUoUE%2FSlExJQqbDeI%2FAAAAAAAABqk%2F1pRghD0J9oc%2Fs400%2F034.JPG&hash=1bd1e23c336f8786bdaf0830be5a14d3f7915fef)
Right inside my room. (I know my room was dirty..) :
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh3.ggpht.com%2F_WYYeXvkUoUE%2FSlExLTi4plI%2FAAAAAAAABqw%2FCMmyniwHTs0%2Fs400%2F036.JPG&hash=a60a2ed6e44b1a7f1a8df7567fb51cca6d310b14)
Above the speed limit sign:
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh3.ggpht.com%2F_WYYeXvkUoUE%2FSlExMnMfNYI%2FAAAAAAAABq0%2FUkww2B1JNEw%2Fs400%2F037.JPG&hash=5512202e7e8a2f823079cb388691cfe460bba0ea)
My room door:
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh6.ggpht.com%2F_WYYeXvkUoUE%2FSlExNioaZTI%2FAAAAAAAABq4%2FUxCuNqx4rAM%2Fs400%2F038.JPG&hash=19c918f2a3cbdaa5c0693406207656577fef0452)
From inside my room, that's behind my room door:
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh5.ggpht.com%2F_WYYeXvkUoUE%2FSlExOnGt8II%2FAAAAAAAABq8%2FWiOLXSiHt9c%2Fs400%2F039.JPG&hash=f8bea52ccee48cdeefc830fa8c444f928a4a293b)

So, that's pretty much it. Never mind the dirtiness in my room. It's been clean A LOT since then..

I have no roadgeek decor, though I was thinking of a way to blend roadgeek decor with science (perhaps a "SPEED LIMIT c" sign).

By the way, KillerTux, where did you get the MD 68 and MD 418 shields?

Ah boooooo...but there's always a den or a garage if you can. :P

Just won an auction for another sign - probably it for now until I can find road-used very local stuff. Here it is:

I've been upgrading over the past week.  Replacements: the weird Scotchlite silver-filled embossed arrow instead of a really junky one, and an embossed metal stop sign (THRU STREET, black on yellow) instead of the wooden one.  New: Cutout US 160 (1960's Colorado style), embossed One Way.  Traded ND I-94 shield for two-digit VT I-189 (both state name).  Still expecting a Manitoba TCH 1 shield as well.  That'll set me for quite some time.

I have an NY 387 shield from 1962, a NY 9N reference marker, PA 999 shield, a Raritan Arsenal Building S-623 sign, several topographic maps, photos of 7 Delaware River Bridges, several Huletts Landing highways, the Pennsy Turnpike tunnels.

I have been looking to add to that a bit.

yes, I'd definitely like to see the NY 387.  Would be interesting to see what style it is... officially, by then NY was using white squares with no "NY" or "US" in the crown, if not the black squares - by 1964 they were using black squares.  But, I know they were still putting up surplus embossed markers as late as 1962.  I've seen an NY US 11 with cateyes with a '62 stamp on the back.

your 20x20 Thruway is 52-61 or so.  1952 is about when the thing opened!

How the hell do you guys get those signs?  I personally wouldn't want to clutter my room with shields, but having one or two would be cool.

Flea Markets, e-bay, estate auctions (sometimes). Or talk to Jake ;)

how do you know that your 387 is a 1962?  does it have a stamp on the back?

also, does it look to have been repainted from an outline shield on a white square?

Written on the back in marker of Jan 1962. I couldn't tell.

the way to tell is that the outer black seems painted, while the inner border of the shield is screen-printed.  the paint also wears differently.  here is an extreme example.

I love those Connecticut Tpke. signs too. Wish I had an old style cutout NY shield - especially if it was a NY 25 one.

Was supposed to be getting a local street sign from another LIer on the Signaltraffic forums: a Patchogue Avenue sign from North Bellport...but the blizzard will delay that a day or two. :/

^^^ Nice a PEI route shield!

Here's a updated list of my small shield collection, mine are scattered so I don't have a group pic of them.

ON 7
ON 27 with older Ontario font and the king's highway legend
ON 6 square style
ON 101 square style with older Ontario font
ON 401 trailblazer with older Ontario font

I also have some stop, parking and regulatory signs, a Econolite signal head and a couple of street light heads. I don't display them all though.
