I know this one's pretty niche, but I got to thinking about it when looking at the "Longest Stretch of Exits" thread and the "Exit Number Ranges for Different Cities" thread.

Through quickly running through the Wiki pages for Colorado highways (which knocked off a bunch for me) and then using iexitapp.com to fairly quickly look through other states, I was able to determine that the lowest exit number I haven't taken (or been on the on-ramp for) is 134. The second lowest is 315. For the record, my highest exit number is 775 on I-10 in TX.

There is an Exit 134 on I-76 here in Colorado, but it's just a county road near Iliff, CO that I haven't had any need to take. Next time I'm up that way...

EDIT - I forgot to check I-69 in TX and realized Exit 134 is the exit to the northside of I-610, which I have taken.

Using current exit numbers, it appears to be 44 if you count on-ramps and 19 if you exclude them. (I've been on a 44 many times in sequential times.)

I know there are some Exit 0's around. I haven't taken any of them. So for me, it's Exit 0.

Oddly enough, I don't think I've ever taken an exit 3.

I think I've taken Exit 0 on I-270(CO), I-40(TX), I-172, I-184, former I-164, and I-65 (AL).

Despite having been on many sixes and eights, I don't think I've ever been on an exit 7 (I've never been to the Northeast).

And for others that might want to figure these out, in general, there's probably a pretty good chance if the state I have listed is outside of Colorado, Minnesota, Kansas, Missouri, or Florida (places I've lived and spent a good amount of time), that it's an interstate junction.

Basically I have been through there who knows how many times in my lifetime.

I exited off of DE 1 Exits 86 and 88 earlier today to get myself up through 90.  I will keep thinking as I move forward today.

At least the lowest route number chase can be somewhat automated by leveraging the Travel Mapping database.  This lowest exit number ... is tedious.  I've only looked at (most of) my home state so far and I'm already going batty.  My OCD compels me to research my travels anyway.

FWIW, I am pretty sure that I do not have an Exit 0.  So if we count from zero, my answer is easy.

If we instead count from 1, I have a fair amount within the first 100.  So far, my lowest number never taken would be 38.  My research continues ...

I doubt I have personally taken an Exit 0 because they are rare in the Northeast. I'm fairly sure, though, when I was a kid, we took exit 0X on the FL Turnpike at Golden Glades before they changed it to plain exit 0...does that count? (As an aside, when I saw the sign as a kid, I thought it read Exit OX as the animal).

Also, how does exit number changes work? Say, on the Mass Pike, you took exit 10 years ago...would you get credit for exit 90 when it was changed several years ago if you haven't taken it yet? I assume the reverse wouldn't count (like you took Exit 90, you wouldn't get credit for 10....then you're essentially giving credit for exit numbers from decades ago in some cases).

How can you get credit for an exit number that didn't exist when you took it?  You didn't take exit X, you took exit Y...

I'm pretty sure the lowest I haven't been on is 23. I can't find one anywhere close to me that I remembered taking. I'll have to keep looking later.

Exit 18 is (currently) the lowest number exit that I haven't taken...

EDIT: Forgot that I got off at Exit 18 when I was in Hawaii... So, my lowest number exit now is 32!

Being from NY with its sequential exit numbers, I was going to cruise through the low numbers. But if I have to start with Exit 0, I won't even get off the ground.

There are decent number of states including NY where the number of Exit 0's = the number of Route 0's. Even despite that, I may have one or two Exit 0's already, just have to do my research.

The argument against counting 0s is that otherwise 95% of the table would be people putting "0", which would be boring and discourage participation.

Please put the "no exit 0" designation on my table row.

Was just taking a look at where the Runza was located in Grand Island, because I know I stopped there last time I was through that stretch of Nebraska, and turns out it's on Locust Street, which is the road that Exit 314 leads to. Doesn't move the needle much though, alas. I also haven't been on an Exit 315. The only one that maaaaaaybe I've been on would be on I-75 in GA in Calhoun, but no way to check that. So I'll likely sit at 315 for quite a while.

If JayhawkCO's memory is to be believed...given how far the Runzas are from the Interstate...wonder what else he has stretched in such a fashion... :D

It's only biased against non-Floridian East Coasters that don't come out to the better part of the country, or perhaps head up to Ontario or Quebec. :)

On that note, from 328-368, most of the ones I've used are Floridian, since I lived in Jacksonville for a hot minute.

Got it. Good thing too because it was uncanny how many times I had used an interchange to enter, but not exit. At least five separate times just for numbers under 70.

It's obviously less tedious as you get higher, just because there are plenty of states that don't have any exits >250. I think it's relatively straightforward to hit up the Wikis for states you live(d) in and knock off a decent amount right off the get go, and for those of you that have lived in less than six states (like me), then that's probably quicker. Then iexitapp.com is pretty quick to run through depending on how much of the interstate system you've traveled. Once you get above 150 or so, then a quick Rand McNally scan is pretty sufficient to find the outliers.

I got at least 45 exits covered by I-95 in Florida, most of them from 298 to 373. Also got 384, 387, and 435 for I-75.

I've also noticed how many unfortunate near misses I have with the number 9, whether by accident or by a lack of an exit numbered 9 in an area I've spent a lot of time in:
- I-244 OK: I've driven past exit 9 on both I-244 and Harvard Avenue, but I have never used the on/off-ramps.
- I-110 LA: I have clinched the route, but the N terminus exit number is 8C.
- I-610 TX: I have used exit 8C but not exit 9.
- I-40 TN: I have used exits 8, 10, and 12A but there is no exit 9.
- I-12 LA, I-20 LA, I-55 AR, AND I-55 MS: No exit 9 but I have been on exit 10.
- I-630 AR: Freeway ends at exit 8A-B, which I have used.
- I-44 MO: No exit 9, but I have used exit 11.

I feel like my number is not helped by the fact that the two states that I live in don't tend to use exit numbers for non-interstate freeways. I have been on exit 880 before, so there's that at least.

I've been here the whole time; I started the thread.

Finally got around to doing a recheck, and I did find an Exit 2. That is on I-95/495 in MD, but however, I have only been on the on-ramp to go from I-295 onto I-95, which is signed as I-295 Exit 1A.

Judging by reply #69, I assume that this would technically count. If JayhawkCO and Rothman do count it, then my lowest number is 6.

Finished my first cut at this.  Started out with my home state of Maryland and got reasonably far.  I will branch out to other states when I get a chance.  Should get a bit easier since I can now limit myself to highways longer than 60 miles.

So ... lowest exit number I haven't been on is 63 (starting with one; no zero yet)(starting with zero)

I guess I could make a road trip to New Stanton PA to get Exit 0 on PA 66, but I'm in no hurry.  "Yeah, let's drive three hours each way so that I can drive on this particular exit ramp".

Yeah, it doesn't matter if you're on a highway to highway connection, as long as one of the exits has the number you're counting, you're good.

Agreed, this list has me majorly confused.

Firstly because the numbers jump around randomly, secondly because there aren't nearly enough numbers listed.

Take I-84 - there are only 17 numbers listed, but NY and PA alone have well over 17 exits, plus Connecticut, which uses sequential based numbers, has every number from 1 to 74 covered.

That list is only for junctions with other Interstates.

These are all the exit numbers for when an interstate intersects another interstate from West to East for even 2dis and from South to North for odd 2dis. If you see the number go down it's either because it's crossed a state line, or, in some cases, the number is different northbound vs. southbound or eastbound vs. westbound when there's a concurrency.

Gotcha now, but... I guess I just don't see the point? Don't take that the wrong way, it's just seems like still a small fraction of the exits that someone might be looking for.

Well, at least for me, outside of my local travels, a good percentage of my driving has been on interstates. So it's pretty easy to get your local exits with Wikipedia, and any travel outside of that area, again, at least for me, is easy enough to do a Ctrl+F to check and see if a missing number is on an interstate I've traveled. I prefaced the post with the caveat that it might not be useful for everyone.

If I get around to it, or maybe @Jim could do something with his data, it might be nice to have an Exit Finder a lot like the Route Finder on TM.

I'll probably eventually try that too. But when I was making my list, I just kept doing a Blanks filter on my spreadsheet to try to find out which numbers I still needed to track down. Hence something like this I think is useful. For instance, I still need 315. Through compiling that list, I found out there is one interstate to interstate connection I could use -- I-69 to I-469. I haven't been on that stretch of I-69 before, so if I ever get up there, I'd be sure to track it down.

On that note, maybe we should start compiling lists by state of non-interstates that have numbered exits.

Not too much for CO. Off the top of my head, C-470, E-470, and Northwest Parkway are it for Colorado.

This is the exact sort of thing the Annex section of the AARoads Wiki was made for, if you're just wanting to store formatted text. (Doing lookups against a db of exits would probably be more robust, though, so if the TM folks want to do it, they could probably do it better.)

After further review I have not taken an exit 142. I've only been on the Ohio Turnpike to go to Cedar Point (highest mile marker = 110). Overall, I have only driven through five of the existing 142's.

I just went for a late night drive down NV-613. I hadn't heard that it had gotten a few exit numbers since I clinched it (since the only exit on 613 I ever use is one of the ones that is still unnumbered). And one of those is an Exit 0 (Anasazi Drive, which really doesn't make much sense being Exit 0, since it's not only not the terminus, it's over a mile from it)! So if you need an Exit 0 and you've ever been tempted to take a Vegas vacation...

Anyway, I did a swan dive down the exit ramp whenever I saw it. Please remove the "no exit 0" designation from my table row.

I see in this thread (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=27509) that when Jim did a search, he only found one in the 400s, which is what I found. I don't see anyone mentioning 375, but I just ran through all the highways that even go 375 miles in a state, and didn't see one, so I feel pretty confident in those. I guess since you're unwilling to share, I'll just keep my supposedly incorrect information.

After taking a look into this, I cannot think of an exit 81 that I've ever used.  I also don't believe I've ever taken an exit 0.

I do wonder if someone is using Jayhawk's list improperly -- i.e., counting "taking an exit" at an interstate-and-interstate interchange when all they did was drive through it without actually taking an exit (and granted, sometimes such movements are the exit ramps, but not always by a long shot).

Wow. I knew there was something supernatural about my appreciation for US 35 in Ohio. It has an Exit 72 I've used (for OH 435, the Breezewood-ish connection to I-71), so I'm back to the races. I've taken every exit on I-84 in CT up to 73 with the exception of 6, 12 (isn't one), 13, and 72.  The first 3 are all covered by I-91 in CT, and 72 is covered by I-95 in CT.  Going up from there:

74: I-95 MD
75-76: I-95 CT
77: I-95 MD


My answer is going to be either 78 or 79 depending on how we count it.  I've taken current I-90 Exit 78 in MA many times, but not since it was Exit 9.  I also took I-395 Exit 9 in CT when it was Exit 79A, but never took any other exit by that number.

Update: I've completed my research and it turns out my previously reported answer was much too hasty. I ended up finding not one, not two, but three Exit 72's I've used (the NY one an obvious gaffe in my initial research), plus I-99 Exit 73 in PA. Adding those to the below list, my official lowest unused number is 79.

NY 17 provides the easiest opportunity to grab that, after which I'll have just a handful of numbers below 100 to check off. Beyond that, I have decent coverage through the 100's and 200's, with no gaps of 10+ numbers until 310-330. Unsurprisingly, 7 of my 10 highest exit numbers used are on the 401 in Ontario (617-796), and the remaining 3 are on I-10 in Texas (523-556).

My number is 67, as far as I can tell. I do have an Exit 0 thanks to I-355, although I entered there so I never saw an "Exit 0" sign.

This is a surprise to me because I've driven through Exit 67 on I-84 in Vernon, CT more times than I can count, both on CT 31 and I-84. Even though there's a decent chance that I've used one of the ramps, I can't find any specific time that I did, so I'm not counting it until I do it for sure.

Once I knock that out, I'm good up to 87. I need to find an excuse to visit Gardner, MA. Or Groton, CT or Hancock, NY before either one switches to mileage-based numbers. I had better hurry... that only gives me about 15 years.  :biggrin:

I am struggling to find evidence of an 83.  So my number is 83 at the moment.  In a few weeks, a short trip to Indiana will bump me all the way up to 150 or maybe farther.

From the routes I've looked through so far, the three lowest numbers I'm missing are 84, 143 and 166.

There's an exit 84 on the Kennedy in Chicago, so that will be easy enough to get.

Highest number I've logged so far is 394.

EDIT: Three lowest numbers I'm missing are 183, 186, 189.

There's a 183 not too far away on I-74 in Champaign.

Highest number I've used is Exit 510 on I-90 in MT.
