Title: Rothman's Misc Pic Thread
Post by: Rothman on June 09, 2024, 01:15:01 PM
Just want a thread where I can share photos that don't seem to fit in with current forum topics.  Doubt I'll post in here that often, but for now, from a recent short trip down to PA/NJ/DE.  Not going to clutter up the NJTP or NJ threads with this:

Squiggly arrow hanging on from NJ 73 to NJTP:

It is interesting, given OH 2's limited access, while US 6 is the "scenic route" along the shore.

Not my photo, but a friend posted this 1905 photograph of Syracuse of a train traveling down Washington St across Genesee St (currently pedestrian only to the right of the triangle-ish building).  Building on the left doesn't exist anymore (Yates Hotel).  Something about the photo seems doctored up, but it's cited as coming from one of Detroit Publishing Company's glass negatives for their postcards.

Can't tell what's real any longer...

My quick litmus test is "Has this image done the rounds on multiple social media platforms and been posted elsewhere many times, usually attributed incorrectly?" If the answer is no: probably 99% chance it's real.

There's a good bit of definition for a photo from 1905, but a glass negative was pretty high-quality stuff for its time. The train was probably not moving fast, because there would be blur at say...anything over 20 mph. Film stock was not very "fast" back then; i.e. the emulsion layer would react "more slowly" to light, and therefore shutter speeds were mostly manually timed to open-and-close. An indoor shot with the same era meant everyone had to stand still for 10-30 seconds.

In the coming decades, we would get all sorts of "faster" film, which permitted quicker shutter speeds, which in turn led to cameras with faster shutters, and therefore, less blur if used at a quick speed on a clear day. The aperture is quite wide open, but film, lenses, and exposure were also not yet to the near-clinical perfection we take for granted today...

Drove the Bridgeport Bridge (US 281 over South Canadian River, former US 66), which recently had a "reconstruction," as ODOT described it.  Widened and strengthened the 38 pony truss bridge and I believe the trusses are actually decorative now.

To Providence RI from eastbound Washington Avenue in Brookline, MA.  Theoretically, you end up on the VFW Parkway eventually which eventually feeds into I-95 south down to Providence, RI, for all those travelers headed to Providence...headed towards Boston on Washington Avenue in Brookline, MA. :D

^^^^

The above is not so strange.  There was a time when US was routed along Jamaicaway and VFW Parkway and did go all the way to Dedham and Providence.

As this area is pretty central within Greater Boston, it is pretty far from I-93 or Route 128 or other expressways, so the best way to reach the southwest area is by taking Jamaicaway.

I don't know if teh signage is still good enough to get you all the way to Providence, though.

HA!  Having driven on the VFW when it was US 1, I can assure that you signage has never been good for point-to-point trailblazing in MA, especially in urban areas.  Although I have a lot of nostalgia for --X--> SGSes in MA, the fact of the matter is that MA's use of them usually left out movements at intersections and concurrencies.  Back in the 1990s, a fun challenge was following MA 116 through Holyoke...

A quick trip down Google Street View shows that you could still lose the route to Providence at any number of locations.

Yeah.  It seems to be the case that the Providence signage is not very consistent on the routing itself.  It seems you can get lost, particularly at the rotaries.

There is some signage from other cross-streets on Jamaicaway/VFW Parkway that might also explain the Providence usage:

Here's a sign from Bridge Street in West Roxbury:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Boston,+MA/@42.2710386,-71.173139,3a,45.5y,46.14h,95.42t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sDDBRQnawcrD5-LbwUiu_Mw!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fcb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26pitch%3D-5.416157733718336%26panoid%3DDDBRQnawcrD5-LbwUiu_Mw%26yaw%3D46.142961181101!7i16384!8i8192!4m6!3m5!1s0x89e3652d0d3d311b:0x787cbf240162e8a0!8m2!3d42.3555076!4d-71.0565364!16zL20vMDFjeF8?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDIxOC4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D

And here is a map from 1956 that shows US 1 along Jamaicaway and VFW Pkwy.

https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~212215~5500292:Shell-Metropolitan-Boston-and-Vicin?mi=4&trs=6&qvq=w4s:/what%2FAutomobile;q:boston%201956;lc:RUMSEY~8~1

It is interesting to see that US 1 simply did not enter central Boston in those days.  Of course, toady, US 1 is routed along the Central Artery and Northern Parkway as much as possible to provide an "almost 95" routing - providing a mostly expressway route through Central Boston connecting southwest to northeast, but a handful of traffic signals connecting the two parts of 95 (where it meets the Circumferential Highway).
