I'm not familiar with any restriction on this in the MUTCD.
Are you talking about these two signs? Because if so, I'm pretty sure the MUTCD essentially requires them to be the same.

There are multiple overhead assemblies going north on I-95 in Delaware displaying the same lane assignments for the 295 split, but again, whether that is an MUTCD violation is being disputed.
