Negotiations between the Ohio River Ferry Authority, KYTC, IDOT and the privately-owned company which operates the Cave-In-Rock Ferry are underway, seeking to avoid a disruption in service that could result if a new deal isn't reached by the end of the current 2-year contract on Sunday, June 30.
About 300 VPD use the ferry, which is free of charge.

*shrug*
Sounds like it'll work out.
Dorena-Hickman, on the other hand, had been plagued with poor water levels, weather or repairs. Seems to be more closed than open.
The deal is done and service will continue, uninterrupted, on the Ferry, according to WEHT/WTVW (https://www.tristatehomepage.com/news/cave-in-rock-ferry-to-continue-service/). That said, negotiations did hit something of a snag, and that was reported by WPSD-TV in Paducah (https://www.wpsdlocal6.com/news/cave-in-rock-ferry-set-to-close-if-contract-agreement-not-reached/article_5cadbe1c-35c2-11ef-b884-9713e02d8947.html).
I think a lot of people don't believe that in the US we still have a lot of small ferry crossings. Usually, we just build a bridge if its a river and move on.
There are several small ferry boats working in the Mississippi/Ohio/Tennessee basin. Beside many of those I have used them in New York (Ticonderoga Ferry) and Florida (St Johns Ferry)
Do we have a thread, just for Ferries?

This is the only one I know of: Ferry routes that you've clinched/traveled https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=5046.0
Effective immediately (10/23/24), the Ferry will no longer be operating on weekends. No reason was given in KYTC's Facebook announcement, but The Crittenden Press reports (https://crittendenpress.blogspot.com/2024/10/cave-in-rock-ferry-will-cease-weekend.html) that a pilot shortage is to blame for the cutback in service.
