Title: Anyone know what happened to Goddard Way at San Diego's airport?
Post by: TheStranger on July 22, 2024, 05:32:53 PM
This is more of a obscure/curio sort of thing:

the old San Diego-based discount airline Pacific Southwest Airlines used to be headquartered at San Diego International Airport/Lindbergh Field.

Government records and wikipedia mention an address of either 3100 or 3110 Goddard Way.

The street does not appear to exist anymore and I haven't found anything about a street rename or such via google searching.

I do know that the terminal was moved from the north side (closer to the old US 101 freeway/Pacific Highway) in the 1970s, to the current location on the southerly side of the airport property along North Harbor Drive.  Wonder if this is when the street was eliminated or renamed, though PSA itself would exist as a separate company until the late 1980s.

I tried to find for a San Diego address for Goddard way but the maps directed me to a residential street in North Highlands, CA in the Sacramento area currently using Goddard way.

Interestingly San Marcos, California has Goddard Street as a residential area. But the one you are suggesting is near the San Diego Airport.

There are streets surrounding the Airport Admiral Bolland Way, Washington Street, Guantanamo Street, Neville Road, Airport Terminal road.

From a 1969 street map:

Looks to have been physically destroyed in the 2010s.  No GMSV gets close enough to see over there before that.

It was still a valid address for Southwest Airlines as late as 2018.  See pg. 51 at https://www.sandiego.gov/sites/default/files/weblist_2018_-_all_alternates_-_by_key_name.pdf

So probably removed/built over in the terminal changes that occurred this past decade (the interchange between Harbor Drive and the terminal road is very different now looking at google - https://www.google.com/maps/place/San+Diego+International+Airport/@32.7285061,-117.2002427,16z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x80deab480c21e6a7:0x12cdddcbcf76a966!8m2!3d32.7332017!4d-117.1896607!16s%2Fg%2F11gf04s53q?entry=ttu )

That's a neat bookend to the history of that address: Southwest Airlines having a facility at 3100 Goddard when that airline took direct inspiration/influence from PSA in the early 1970s pre-deregulation era (before Southwest's expansion to the rest of the United States).

Saw that and parts of Goddard way became ramps to other parts of the San Diego Airport .
