Title: Adak Island Photo Dump
Post by: JayhawkCO on July 30, 2024, 04:42:14 PM
Not sure if anyone was interested, but I figured I could compile some of the best pics from my trip out to Adak Island. Not a lot of roads to travel out there (only 16 miles), but I know some others like the remote places like I do.

How was the weather in July?

Quote from: formulanone on July 30, 2024, 05:26:16 PMHow was the weather in July?

Day 1 pretty typical. 100% overcast and a light sprinkle at the beginning of our hike, but then dry the rest of the way. Highs around 56º. The challenge was finding a campsite where the ground wasn't soaked, but we found a little mini mesa that didn't catch runoff from anything around it.

Day 2 was magical. I woke up to only about 25% cloud cover. Once we got hiking, it clouded up a little bit over Hiker's pass, but once we got up to the top of Husky Pass, the sun was coming out again. By the time we made camp near Lake Bonnie Rose, there were few clouds in the sky and almost no wind. Visibility was very good as evident by the views of Great Sitkin Island and its giant volcano that you can see in one of the pictures above.  High was probably right around 60º.

Day 3 was ugly to start. I woke up early due to hearing some rain and then the wind picked up pretty markedly. Since there was no wind the previous night, we had set up our tent any which way and then in the morning, we were getting t-boned by the wind. Gusts were probably 40-45 mph with driving rain. We made the choice after a bit to pack it up so we didn't snap a tent pole or rip the tent, and that was probably a good idea. We got to the trailhead where we were being picked up in only about 35-40 minutes and we were able to take shelter in an abandoned quonset hut while we waited for our ride. As the day went along, the rain and wind stopped and the sun peeked out from time to time. Highs were probably about 55º.

Day 4 was just cloudy with mild (by Adak's standard) winds and sprinkles if anything for precipitation. No issues getting out on the semi-weekly flight.

I just realized that, for scale, I should show where our campsite was on the 2nd night. You can see the tent in this pic.

Really interesting photos, especially of the abandoned McDonald's.
