Title: What is the purpose of an open-front toilet seat?

This article details why public restrooms usually have toilet seats that are U-shaped, rather than the O-shaped seats that are more common in homes. Three arguments are detailed, including hygiene, ergonomics, and cost to produce the seats. Ultimately, the reporter researched statements from the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials and the American Society of Plumbing Engineers and found that hygiene was the reason—longer seats with an open front reduce contamination from previous users.

Obligatory "pooing is cool!" :bigass:

I've honestly never paid attention to this before, but now, it'll be impossible for me to ignore.

I'm sure Toiletgeeks think the same thing when someone points out a unique road feature out to them.

Now I'm wondering if vintage toilet collecting is a thing?

Cecil Adams addressed this question nearly thirty-five years ago: https://www.straightdope.com/21342104/why-are-public-toilet-seats-always-u-shaped

Considering the swampy conditions that underlie the average urinal, his succinct explanation always rang pretty true to me.

I don't mean to "poo poo" things, but that sounds like a shitty hobby.

Obviously to give gentlemen the option to "downshift" and not pee all over the floor when they go to poo.

Doesn't always work at my employment place however.

It's so men won't catch syphilis from toilet seats. You do know that that's how men get syphilis, don't you?
