Title: Longest unclinched roads you've driven both ends of
Post by: pderocco on November 03, 2024, 06:01:52 AM
There's a thread from 2017, https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=21364.0 (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=21364.0), which asks a similar question, but this excludes clinched roads because you'd obviously have driven both ends, and also specifies that you've had to drive both ends, not just "see" them as you pass by in a T intersection. Also, people's answers have probably changed in seven years. And you might as well specify how much you've driven, since that could be interesting.

My longest would be US-20. I've driven from Newport OR to I-5, and from Boston almost to Springfield MA. Also quite a bit in NY.

My second longest would be US-6, from Bishop CA almost to Denver CO, and from Provincetown MA (where I used to live) a ways into NY.

I've driven US-50 from Sacramento CA to Grand Junction CO, but also the easternmost six miles into Ocean City. I don't think I was even aware I was on such a long road at the time I was exploring the Delmarva peninsula.

For interstates, it's I-90, from Seattle to Billings, and from Boston to Chicago. That's a little different because I did a cross-country trip in which I drove most of I-90, while the others were mere coincidences, as I haven't driven much in the middle.

No N/S routes for me yet, although next summer I hope to drive the north ends of US-1 and I-95, which I've already driven the south ends of.

Not sure if this counts, but I did both ends of the Western US 2, but not the Eastern US 2.

I-90 for Interstates

US 40 for US Routes

Alabama 21 for state-level routes (7 miles to go)

Georgia SR 1 is actually longer, but entirely overlaps US 27.

I-80.  The only unclinched section I've got on it is between Tahoe and the East Bay.

Also I-90.  Various unclinched sections between Rapid City and western Washington.

US 30 for me.  I've actually finished the highway in Oregon and New Jersey but not a lot in the Great Plains.

Interstates: I-20

US Routes: US 29

State Routes: I guess it is technically NY 17 for now, but I think it may eventually be NC 210 or NC 55.

I'd count that. They're really separate roads that never had a ghost of a chance of being connected, short of the US conquering Canada.

US-26 isn't super-long, but I had driven the western part from Seaside to Madras OR a few times. When entering my data into Travelmapping, I discovered I had driven the easternmost 0.8 miles when I got off I-80 in Ogallala for gas once. I also got a nice picture there: (https://a4.pbase.com/u34/pderocco/upload/21445750.03090719grainelevators.jpg)

Interstate: I-10, just missing about 120 miles between San Antonio and Columbus.

US Highway: US 20, if you count it as all one route.  Missing about 1100 miles scattered around.  Otherwise, US 30 is the easy winner.  I'm missing a about 1650 miles.

For a state highway, NY 5 seems like it would be hard to top.  Just missing a couple segments totaling 30 miles or so between Buffalo and Dunkirk.

US 20 and I-90 also. For a state highway, it would have to be CA 1 N-S and CA 20 E-W.

US-64. Overall I have 241.74 of 2,325.68 miles, but I've been to both ends of it (the eastern end as a kid when we went to Nags Head on vacation a few times, the western end on a trip to New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona in 2015).

I've been on US 41 from its northern end to US 141, and from its southern end to FL 970.

I've been on all of I-75 from its northern end to the eastern junction with I-40, and from its southern end to FL 780.

US 20: I have driven from Newport through Albany, OR and taken the Green Line through Kenmore Square, so I think this counts.

I-90: I have driven from Seattle to Butte and quite a bit more, but only did the Ted Williams Tunnel via the Silver Line bus.

Right now no road qualifies for me. N-260 comes very close, but I'm missing the section between the French border and Portbou. I also have the section from somewhere between Figueres and Besalu to La Seu d'Urgell (Andorra turnoff) missing. If/when C-260 gets resigned as C-26 as planned, that will automatically win (thanks to the short section between the regional border and N-230).

Interstate: 94. I'm missing the section through metro Detroit between Ypsilanti and 26 Mile Road.

US: 1. I've made the trek to both ends, seen virtually none of the rest of it between Homestead, FL and Portland, ME.

MN state route: This was hard for me to figure out for sure but I think it's TH 220. Some disjointed sections between the termini have been done.

I'd say the train through Kenmore Square is okay because it's on the street pretty much. As to I-90, it does go a little past the airport to route 1A.

I-95 and US 1, just missing about 180 miles of I-95 in Florida, most in New York and a bit in Massachusetts. By contrast, there are several entire states I have not been on any of US 1 in.

For me, I-91. I have the segment south of CT 15 and the segment north of I-89, plus a few exits in Massachusetts. I almost have both ends of I-90, but I haven't been on the tiny bit west of I-5 in Seattle.

Thought I'd have a real banger in I-80, but nope, I'm missing the last mile in San Fran proper.

I think it's I-81 - I've clinched about 90% of the 859 mile route including both termini - just missing most of the Harrisburg-Scranton stretch as there's no real convenient way to clinch that stretch from where I'm at.

US-1 (Technicality:  I've gone "north" from the southern terminus in Key West by walking and once in a golf cart, but not in a motor vehicle.)
Eastern US-2
I-75
I-94
I-95 (Technicality:  On the northern end, only to exit 305 (US-2) and not to the END I-95 assembly just beyond that at Customs.)

I don't have a 2di or a US Route that qualifies because I have clinched the only 2di (western I-88) and the only two US Routes (US 73 and US 159) I have driven both ends of. I have seen both ends of US 218, but did not drive the south end in Keokuk.

The longest state highway that qualifies is WI 35. MN 23 and IA 3 are the longest in their states.

I've now driven US 30 at each end.

West end between Portland and Astoria in Oregon.
East end between the terminus in Atlantic City and CR 575 in Galloway, NJ.

I-80 I now have segments at each end.
East- I've driven every part from Teaneck,, NJ to the Ohio Turnpike merge near Niles, OH.
West- I driven from US 101 in SF to I-505.

Oh and I-64.

I have it all driven, but from I-69 in IN to US 52 at Huntington, WV and from the I-64/ I-77 split to US 60 ( where it deviates from the interstate east of Beckley to Charleston in WV).

Interstate: I-76 East
Missing almost all of the route between I-80 in OH and I-95 in Philadelphia

US Highway: None to the best of my knowledge

State Route: NY-32 (unless there is something obscure that I can't remember)
Missing most of the route between I-787 in Albany and the roundabout in downtown Glens Falls

Interstate 70 for me.  I've been at both ends but am about 50 miles short of clinching it, the longest stretch being between I-68 and I-76.

Both I-90 and I-40 are longer, and I've been at the west ends of both, but not on short stretches at their east ends.

For me, US 29 comes to mind.  1043 total miles long.  I've driven on it in downtown Pensacola FL as well as where it dead-ends at MD 99 near Ellicott City MD.  As well as several discontiguous segments in the middle.

I think I-90 just misses the mark for me. I've been on all of it in Washington. I've been on I-90 in Boston from Logan airport out to I-495. But, I missed the final stretch between the airport and MA-1, so doesn't quite count.

I also didn't drive on any of US-20 in Boston (though my hotel out in Marlborough was right on US-20 so I did drive it there). Though I would have been very near by it. I've been to the Newport, OR end multiple times as a kid/teen, though it's not on my travel mapping because I haven't been there as an adult while driving myself.

That leaves I-15 as the real answer for me. On the North end, I've been from the Canadian border through all of Montana, into Idaho until ID-22. On the south end, I have from I-8 up to CA-91. But I'm missing from Corona to Las Vegas, and ID-22 to Idaho Falls. Travel mapping says 1162/1451 mi, 80%. Travel Mapping I-15 (https://travelmapping.net/hb/showroute.php?units=miles&u=doorknob60&r=id.i015&cr) (turn off show markers if you want to actually see it)

As I've not been to both ends of the country, I can't claim any routes for this. The closest I get is seeing I-40 in Wilmington and being on I-40 in Albuquerque. There's about a 1,000 mile gap between the two sections I've traveled, between Albuquerque and West Memphis.

I call this "bookending" a route.  For US Routes*, I have bookended US14, US31, US421, and US45. The longest Interstate I've bookended without clinching is probably I-64.

While it doesn't change my overall longest (I-91), I've now been on both ends of MA 9. Interestingly, the only portions I have of MA 9 are in Pittsfield west of US 7 (3/8 mile), east of Evans Way (i.e. Isabella Stewart Gardner museum) in Boston (1 3/4 miles), and a tiny portion over a decade ago from I-95/MA 128 to Ellis St. (about 3/8 mile depending on ramps taken).

I-80 and I-90 are both near misses for me.  I lack I-90 at the western end from I-405 to I-5 in Downtown Seattle, and I lack I-80 at the eastern end from I-280 to I-95.  So I think my longest is I-55, which I have from Tangipahoa, LA to the south end at LaPlace, LA, and from Willowbrook, IL to Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, and several long sections in between but not all of it.

For US highways, it's definitely US 50.  I have it from Sacramento to Carson City, and from Fairfax, VA to Ocean City, MD, and all sorts of sections in between.

And for state highways it's probably the mostly-unsigned TN 1, which I have the ends and most of it in between, but I definitely lack a few bits and pieces in West and East Tennessee.

Probably I-44 for me.

I-80 for me, having lived close to both ends.

My Dad might claim I-24, on a single roadtrip vacation from FL to western IA long ago. Both ends were open to traffic, and it would have been a simple clinch, but there were some unconstructed portions in KY. I was already the "map guy" in the family (age 9 or so?) and remember apologizing for all the detours along KY 80.

Also, Dad, teasing me when I-24 dipped south into GA to meet I-59: "are you sure we're going the right way?"

US 35 at 412 miles is the longest I can think of currently.

Longest state route would be IN-124 at 69.6 miles.

Longest interstate doesn't exist for me, if I've been on both ends I've clinched.

The only one I can think of is NH 19 in India, catching the north end in Delhi and the east end outside of Kolkata up to Bardhamman.

As of a recent trip, and due to the extension of the route, I-57. I'm counting the "unbuilt" sections as part of the continuous route rather than being two independent highways with different termini.

I-90

I have been two both endpoints, but not the section from Missoula east to the Black Hills. Also between Cleveland and Boston I have only been on a few sporadic sections.

For US Highways, I'm pretty sure its US-41 - I know the southern endpoint isn't well signed. Otherwise it would be US-51.

I-10 - I've been on it from Santa Monica to I-5 in the Los Angeles area, then from Comfort, TX to its terminus at I-95 in Jacksonville, FL.

For me, I've driven both ends of I-74 in Cincinnati and Davenport but have never traveled the stretch between Urbana and Davenport or Indy and I-275 in Cinci.

For US routes, US 24 must be it. I have a memory of driving the north (east) end in Michigan off of I-75 back maybe 15 years ago, and I've completed the west end here in Colorado multiple times. I have a lot of isolated segments in-between but no clinch.

For my state route, I have to say CO 149. I've been on the US 50 to Lake City segment and the Creede to US 285 segment, but still haven't driven between Creede and Lake City.

The longest I can think of off the top of my head is CA 1. I've clinched most of it from Dana Point to Leggett, including both termini, but I haven't been on it through Lompoc or the Big Sur.

NY 5 at 370ish miles... I have been on the east end in Albany more times than I can count, and drove the western few miles to take a break from I-90 on a midwest-to-Albany trip years ago. I'm missing virtually everything between Buffalo and Utica, except for a few little pieces here and there.

Quote from: mgk920 on March 20, 2025, 12:37:14 AMMe, likely WI 32 (I've been on it at both state lines, but I'm missing several sections in between).

I have also been on WI 35 at both ends, but not on lengthy sections in between.

My just completed road trip included US-2 from Everett to Orondo WA. A long time ago, I drove Escanaba to St Ignace MI.

The only time I've been on US-2 was hitchhiking, and it was from Escanaba to St Ignace (along the way from Menominee to Paw Paw).

I'll list the longest in each category: interstate, US, and state highways.

I-90 (3112 miles): I only drove the eastern end once (eastbound) for the sole purpose of clinching it, and I was a passenger for the western end going to and from a Mariners game.  I'm only missing the segments in WA between Exits 151 and 220A, and in IL between Rockford and Chicago.

US 30 (3106 miles): I've driven the eastern end in Atlantic City many (probably over a hundred) times and the western end in Astoria once.  I'm still missing about 2100 miles in between, although my longest clinched segment is from Lisbon, OH to Dixon, IL.

NY 5 (373 miles): I believe I've only driven each end once, and I'm still missing about 130 total miles in 6 different segments between Chittenango and Dunkirk.

I added a quite lengthy state highway to my list:

I've now driven both ends of the 413 mile WI 35.

I'm pretty sure the only route this even applies to me with is I-37, at 143 miles.
