Title: Proposition K - Close Great Highway
Post by: jander on November 07, 2024, 10:21:55 PM
https://sfstandard.com/2024/10/31/sf-election-2024-prop-k-great-highway/

QuoteIf Prop. K passes, the Great Highway wouldn't close immediately. Rather, it would trigger a long process requiring state and federal approval to develop a plan.

So what has to happen to actually close the highway?  And what does state and federal approval look like.

I'd ask, on this Friday after the election, did it pass? Then I realized it was California, who mocks Florida routinely yet can't pump out 60% of its results in 3 days.

Probably will pass, had an about 6% lead when I last look at poll results.

Mail ballots can be counted even if received as late as November 12th here.

As of today, though, they've counted enough that it looks like the proposition will pass.

I better not hear anyone in San Francisco whine about traffic once the Great Highway is closed.

I doubt they will.  When I lived right in the City, it was perceived to be quite overbuilt.

From SF Gate:

Measure K passes, closing part of San Francisco's Great Highway
QuoteThe Upper Great Highway first closed as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020. In August 2021, the city adopted a pilot program to close the roadway only on weekends, except for emergency vehicles and park staff. The pilot program ends Dec. 31, 2025.

Officials can now start the process of closing the entire section of the road sometime after the pilot program ends.

Random ass guess, once sand season starts in January they probably won't bother much with clearing it.  They may make a half hearted attempt once or twice, but why bother.

Its usually closed for being sand covered half of January anyway

From SF Gate:

Map shows clear geographic divide among San Francisco voters on Great Highway
QuoteSan Franciscans were strikingly divided over Measure K, which passed Saturday and ensured part of Great Highway will permanently close to vehicle traffic. Unfortunately for the residents most impacted by the closure, they didn't get their way in the vote.

(paragraph deleted)

This is not what many neighbors wanted, an election map from the San Francisco Chronicle clearly shows. (The Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms.) Nearly every precinct west of Twin Peaks voted against the measure, some overwhelmingly so. Outer Richmond voters, in particular, were largely opposed, with some precincts voting 70-83% against the measure. The strongest support for Prop. K came from neighborhoods on the east side of the city, far from Great Highway.

From San Francisco Chronicle:

Prop K fallout: Constituents warn S.F. supervisor of repercussions over car ban on Upper Great Highway
QuoteSome of San Francisco Supervisor Joel Engardio's constituents say he could face political repercussions for supporting Proposition K, a successful ballot measure that will permanently close a 2-mile stretch of the Great Highway to cars.

A majority of voters in the Sunset District, the neighborhood closest to the Great Highway, opposed the proposition, which passed with 54% of the vote in returns released Saturday afternoon.

I figured this was the way the vote would pan out, and it's unfortunate. No one in the eastern half of the city is using Great Highway for their daily tasks, let along getting into/out of the city, but I'm sure a bunch of them go over there on weekends for their bike rides and beach walks.

This vote should have just been for districts 1 and 4 (i.e. everything west of 19th) and maybe district 7.

Good job San Francisco! Bummer the closure has to wait until 2026, why not speed up the process?

I hesitate to call this "good."  Seems most of the votes in favor of this came from districts that use Great Highway as a through road (as pointed out already).  Oh well, glad I got my photos before the ocean really started taking the corridor.
