From Thrillist:
The Only Decent Places to Stop on an I-5 Road Trip Between SF and LA
These may be the only stops along the 5 freeway that won't ruin your day.QuoteEverybody in Southern California has an internal ranking of freeways, based mostly on where they live and their regular commutes (even those intrepid public transit users). To wit: the 2 is lovely, the 210 and 134 have good and bad stretches, and the 405 is pure garbage no matter how many lanes they add. But perhaps no piece of road is as broadly reviled state-wide as the 200-ish mile stretch of highway 5 through the Central Valley. It is flat and dull, full of big rigs, and prone to congestion and construction. But it is a necessary evil, the fastest and most direct route between LA and points north, and despite the drabness of the drive itself there are in fact several worthwhile places to stop along the 5 freeway.

Nope, this one can be blamed as a problem existing between chair and keyboard. Oh, and it's fixed now.
I only stop at the rest areas...
Edit: and Outlets at Tejon. Their restrooms are really nice and spacious.
If we are going by the criteria of chains are good then I'd agree with Santa Nella. There is an almost never busy INO at that exit. Laval Road and Wheeler Ridge is a shit show no matter where you stop at. It makes the sparse offerings at Grapevine Village appealing by comparison.
I'm almost always on CA 99 anyway for that run. I get tired of playing dodgem with tractor-trailers.
