We're road tripping from Des Moines to LA this summer.
We know the way we're going down for sure: 35 to OKC and 40 over, so we can hit up Sid's Diner, Breaking Bad shenanigans, and the Grand Canyon.
We also know we're going to take 15 up to hit up Vegas and Zion.
Here's my question- I've done 70 from Glenwood Springs to KC already, as well as 76. I haven't done any of Utah and I haven't done 80 west of Cheyenne. My son, who has never seen the mountains, obviously has never been on either.
Do I take 70 from Utah to Denver and 76 to 80, or 80 from SLC all the way to Des Moines? I've heard the 80 drive in Wyoming is brutal. I've been on 20/26 from Casper to Grand Teton for reference.
Either way we'd hit up the basketball arenas in OKC, LA, and either Denver or SLC since he's a huge NBA fan.

Not sure how much time you have, but why don't you do something like I-70 to Grand Junction, then US50 east to Poncha Springs, then US285 up to Denver? Obviously I can make even more roundabout routings through Colorado, but that's at least somewhat direct. I-80 through Wyoming is, indeed, pretty boring. The drive down to Evanston from the Utah border is fine and then between Laramie and Cheyenne is nice enough. The rest isn't fun.
I-70 in Utah is arguably as scenic as I-70 in Colorado too.
I agree about the southern part of WY not being as interesting as CO. If you're going to Zion, though, you should really include the entirety of UT-12 in your trip, as well as UT-24 east of UT-12. Canyonlands NP is also pretty spectacular, as a side trip. Other nice sides are Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches.

I do like the idea of WY existing by default when states formed around that empty space.

Interestingly, there's a similar theory about a city in Germany that doesn't exist. But that was from the early 90s Usenet, so this is just the American version of that.
Sad thing is you know some people who post about this actually DO think the state doesn't exist.
