Title: Trying to figure out the top of this photo (MacArthur Maze 1948)
Post by: Voyager on December 02, 2024, 12:43:44 PM
Saw this on a Facebook group, and it's dated 1948 from the Bay Bridge Toll Plaza - I thought the original "Traffic Distribution Structure" had been built already, but it looks almost like there's a roundabout at the top of the photo?

Something temporary for construction? 1946 aerial has nothing there, just the interchange.

Bridges were removed there as part of the construction in the late 40s...may have been a pier from a flyover that was removed.  Also could be the first pier for the bridges that were built (see 1958 aerial for how the interchange was reconfigured).

Freeway construction pre interstate era was starting like US-50, US-40 were being realigned from major streets like San Pablo Ave on US-40 to Eastshore Freeway.
